To tell DS that he cant buy them?

I am genuinely stuck here between overstepping the mark or being helpful.

DS has wanted a set of Dr Dre Beats headphones for months, its his 13th birthday tomorrow and he's saved a bit himself and also worked out that if he uses all of his birthday money then he can afford this item ( 130 quid Shock )
I don't agree with him spending this amount on a set of headphones but hey Ho...

Anyway, he found a pair on eBay, I was about to order them this morning, but decided to message the seller to check if they are the genuine brand ( normally they retail for a hundred quid more ) and it turns out they are replicas.

I think DS is being ridiculous to pay for these, but wibu to not 'let' him, or do I have to stand back and let him do what he wants with his own money?
Confused

What seeker said AGAIN!

Sparklingbrook · 23/04/2012 12:35

Thick E bay question. are they allowed to sell fake stuff?

valiumredhead · 23/04/2012 12:35

I imagine because they said they are 'replicas' then that covers them.

boringnickname · 23/04/2012 12:36

Do not buy the replica's they could be badly wired and be crap, at best, dangerous at worst.

suzikettles · 23/04/2012 12:37

Don't use the word "replicas" they are fakes. Probably worth about a fiver.

It would only take one mate to look at them once he's got them and say "nah, look these are fakes, load of rubbish", for your poor ds's bubble to be well and truly burst and he'll never look at them again.

Don't let him do this. He's probably been boasting to his friends that he's getting a pair for his birthday which is why he's so set on it, but it'll be public humiliation if he tries to pass a fake off as real.

Sparklingbrook · 23/04/2012 12:37

What a swizz. Shock

valiumredhead · 23/04/2012 12:37

I bet the sellers details say 'no returns' as well.

seeker · 23/04/2012 12:37

Well the solos get fantastic reviews on amazon. No blue ones though.

loopylou6 · 23/04/2012 12:41

Nowhere did it state on the listing that they where fakes replicas, he only admitted it when I asked him outright.

seeker I've just been reading the reviews for those on Amazon too, and 90% say they're excellent don't they.

I'm gonna do my best to persuade him to go for those ones.

As the owner of a 13 yo DS, I reckon once he has actually thought about it and realizes they are fake he won't want them.

The price of these things are ridiculous, my DS saved up for 6 months and used birthday money, we also paid some towards it for his birthday present.

I can't see him wanting fakes though, everyone will know they are not genuine.
(this is why my ds1 gets about 3 items of clothing a year- I refuse to pay £90 for a hoodie and £110 for a belt)

valiumredhead · 23/04/2012 12:45

It'll be social death if they are fakes.

sugarice · 23/04/2012 12:46

Loopy, I'm hoping he'll change his mind hence the wait til Christmas. For the life of me I don't get it but he says they give a sound better ConfusedHe could buy them himself to be honest but there's other stuff he wants more; festival tickets and clothes so the bank of Mum and Dad will cough up at Christmas time.

inabeautifulplace · 23/04/2012 12:47

No No No No No to the fakes. As above, your son will be ridiculed for being a mug when the truth is out. And make no mistake, the business model for making copies of these products involves maximum profit and minimum quality. Any brand relies partly on quality to sell product but that does not apply to a copy because they piggyback on the success of the brand.

tantrumsandballoons · 23/04/2012 12:48

People at my ds1 school google how to find out if an expensive item is fake and then go around checking everything (the"gucci belt saga- that's a whole other thread in itself)

valiumredhead · 23/04/2012 12:48

Email the seller and ask outright if they are genuine.

loopylou6 · 23/04/2012 12:49

Thanks you lot, I think I might show him this thread when he gets home from school.

been there done that

they didn't work....

The point is they aren't real so they don't work anyway.

MyDaydream · 23/04/2012 12:53

Don't let him but these. I wish I had a story about a teen DC as it would make spending so much on headphones better, but my DP bought some £90 fakes on eBay. Few weeks after purchase he got his money back from the seller saying they couldn't source. Then he got a letter from customs saying they'd been seized at port with his details and would be destroyed.

PurplePidjin · 23/04/2012 12:53

Actually, with sound equipment you often do get what you pay for - more expensive speakers contain higher quality materials and better made components.

Hullygully · 23/04/2012 12:54

In my defence ds bought them without me paying attention. The seller said they were authentic, but of course they weren't. The box had lots of typos for a start...

BellaVita · 23/04/2012 12:59

If he wants to buy the proper ones from the shop let him.

Ds2 (12) got a pair for Xmas, they have paid for themselves already!

mayorquimby · 23/04/2012 13:01

They're good headphones but there's a fair old mark-up premium on the branding so they're good but not good enough to justify the price tag.
I'd warn him off the replicas for all the reason stated but after that I'd leave it up to him, it's his money and a good life-lesson in responsibility either way.

stealthsquiggle · 23/04/2012 13:05

Which ones is it he wants exactly? are they "Beats by Dr. Dre Studio High-Definition Headphones"? - cos I can get those (proper ones) for £205.

seeker · 23/04/2012 13:08

"If he wants to buy the proper ones from the shop let him.

Ds2 (12) got a pair for Xmas, they have paid for themselves already!"

How? Do they turn tricks after ds has gone to bed??????

BellaVita · 23/04/2012 13:14

Seeker of course they do, they have special powers!

He is happy, we are happy! We cannot hear his music and he is getting good quality sound played to his ears.
