not that I try them myself, but my children generally do.

We were in tescos on saturday and they had pork pie/sausage rolls and no fruit shoots on the counter to try, my children went up and tried them, then another coupl came up and started trying them.....The deli counter woman came over and said rather rudely

'are any of you going to buy anything or are you all just going to stand their eating?' and she tutted and walked offShock!

Of course they're there for people to try...obviously the hope is it leads to a sale but that shouldn't be expected.

When I was a starving student we used to hit the Harrods food hall because they gave out so many samples you could eat the equivalent of a really good gourmet lunch for nowt !

UnChartered · 23/04/2012 10:41

did you not know they are a free buffet for fee-paying shoppers only?

Grin

stupid deli woman

see, another reason NOT to shop at Tosco

Hahaha, sometimes you don't even need to eat tea if you time it right in supermarkets. Of course they are there to eat, if just 1 person buys whatever is cut up then there is their money back.

Don't worry about it, we all spend enough money in these places :)

sixlostmonkeys · 23/04/2012 10:43

I wouldn't have been able to resist replying with "We are just going to stand here eating" with a confused look on my face which said why would I do anything else and you are asking a stupid question.

supernannyisace · 23/04/2012 10:44

How rude of the staff!

I used to work on the deli in another well known supermarket - rhymes with... errr... nothing - berries Grin

We used to have loads of samples out - and it was always amusing watching peeps taking a handful.

In fact, if someone requested a taste of cheese/ham/salami that wasn't out for sampling we had to cut them a sliver to taste. Good customer service obviously.

You carry on - why would you buy it if youdon't know if you like it?

supernannyisace · 23/04/2012 10:46

In fact ou should have asked for a cuppa to wash it down.!! :)

Now what does get my goat is seeing customers eating food from their trollies which hasn'tyet been paid for. Especially the fruit which is to be weighed. That is actual theft.

Once someone put a banana skin on the checkout with the whole bananas - as they had eaten it whilst walking around. I just took the largest banana from the bunch and weighed that one twice!

ohgawd · 23/04/2012 10:47

Crappy old tesco again.

themightyfandango · 23/04/2012 10:47

My children would have tried them too. I guess the point of them is to entice sales but I have had sales people practically forcing samples on me before despite me stating that I am not buying the product.

I think she was a bit rude. The customer is always right etc....However it would be rude if you were taking a lot and monoplising the sample area (not suggesting you actually did this)

Maybe she was having a bad day.

SamuelWestsMistress · 23/04/2012 10:48

I usually have to give these to stop tantrums. They're life savers!

(it's either that or the abhorrently detested act of opening a snack BEFORE it's been bought!)

Agincourt · 23/04/2012 10:48

I don't know why I go in there really, the staff are always rude to us and now I have made us sound like the adams family

But Morticia has such a good look.

sue52 · 23/04/2012 12:42

Isn't that what samples are for? I can see why there profits are down if that's how the staff treat their customers.

notaniphoneownerjustabadtypist · 23/04/2012 12:56

Never touch the samples personally, I think they are unhygienic. People breathing on them and touching them with unwashed fingers. But ... I agree with you, if people don't try they won;t buy!

Agincourt · 24/04/2012 11:51

oh I don't try them either :o as I said, it's my unwashed children Wink
