To think that the 2012 Olympic Bell should have been cast in the UK?

Please be nice this is my first ever AIBU, although not really argumentative unless you hate the olympics.

There are two bell casting firms in the country, one in London and one in Leicester, the one in London has been commissioned to build the biggest bell in the country to commemorate the 2012 Olympics, the Leicester firm was asked to quote but it turns out it was just to verify the cost of the London Firm.

The reason the London firm was picked is because it's manufacturing roots could be traced back longer than any other business in the world (I'm sure that's what the news said), any way all well and good but now the London firm have outsourced the work to a company in Holland so the bell will be cast there!

The olympics (which I'm looking forward to alot) is costing a lot of money, I'd rather money go to UK firms than not.

So AIBU to think this?

YANBU. And welcome to AIBU!

The more I hear about the Olympics, the more I'm convinced it's just an event for Boris and Ken and Seb and all their suited-and-booted, loaded mates. I think life will be an utter nightmare for ordinary plebian Londoners (me) during the whole thing. And all this outsourcing to other countries is just rubbing salt in the wounds.

So again, YADNBU! Smile

What the hell do we need a bell for anyway? Where the fuck is it going to go? Will it actually be used after the olympics?

yanbu about made in UK, and
yabu about saying "Leicester" when the foundary is actually in Loughborough!

I used to live a stone's throw from it :). Lots of bell ringing in our neighbourhood (one of the few Loughborough things I miss).

Ooops sorry ragged Leicestershire, is that better?? Grin
I just think as it's costing so much, that wealth should be shared around the UK first so we can at least keep jobs here.
Have no idea where it will be hung, or where it's going after the Olympics Hmm

Apparently only about 7% of the Olympic souvenirs are being made in this country which makes me Angry (and determined not to buy any which is probably unreasonable but there you are). We were told the games would boost the British economy but I can't see any evidence of it so far, just expense.
