to cry because of the bank lady

We bought a new boiler a few weeks ago. DH made me put it on my credit card. I don't use it and haven't for years, because I am terrible at remembering to pay bills (DH doesn't have one). Because I'm so crap with bills, I clicked the 'switch to paper statement' button.

DH just asked me when I'd paid it off - i hadn't. So I assume the bill hasn't been sent yet. Wrong. I'd been charged. So I phone the bank, pay the full amount and ask to waive the fees as it's their fault. All they could do was reiterate that the 'charge is valid'. The lady clearly didn't understand what I was telling her (when I called this evening I first spoke to a man to pay the amount, spoke to him and he made sure it was switched to paper statements; it hadn't been changed on their system - then passed onto the lady, who kept saying 'yes, you changed to paper statements today, the charge is valid').
I just gave up and cried.

I hate fucking credit cards and I hate fucking banks. Can I complain? To whom. Tis wanky HighStreetBankingCunts btw.

It isnt really the bank's fault that you are crap at paying your bills.

BellaVita · 20/04/2012 22:26

What squeaky said.

Even if you had switched to paper when you said you had, you still need to remember to pay it by a certain date.

aleene · 20/04/2012 22:27

When exactly did you click the switch to papter statement button?
Phone tomorrow and speak to someone else.

I make sure I have direct debits set up for my credit cards as I am also shit at remembering to pay bills.
That way, I don't need to remember.

WorraLiberty · 20/04/2012 22:27

Is writing it on the calendar a problem?

I live by my calendar (not literally...I do move away from it)

Once it fell into a bucket of bleach when I slammed the kitchen door

A little part of me died that month

aleene · 20/04/2012 22:28

Yes but if the bank did not send the bill even though the customer requested one then they are in the wrong surely?

Thetokengirl · 20/04/2012 22:28

X post.

LoopyLoopsTootTootToots · 20/04/2012 22:29

I did set up DD, for the minimum amount, but wanted to pay in full.

OP posts:
HappyCamel · 20/04/2012 22:29

Set a direct debit to pay the whole amount, then if you use it you can't get caught out, forgetting to pay. You don't have to pay on the deadline, you could have paid as soon as you had the money. I understand why you upset but it isn't the bank's fault. YABU, sorry.

LoopyLoopsTootTootToots · 20/04/2012 22:30

I switched on the day I bought the boiler, because I wanted to avoid this situation.

OP posts:
Rhinosaurus · 20/04/2012 22:30

Do you mean you switched to non paper statements, ie online statements? Even so they email to say when a statement is available.

What fees were you charged! They are normally quite good if it a genuine mistake about waiving fees, ie recently I changed banks and the dd didn't kick in in time and they waived fees.

LoopyLoopsTootTootToots · 20/04/2012 22:31

But you can't set up a DD to pay the full amount. It won't let you. I would have otherwise.

OP posts:
tethersend · 20/04/2012 22:31

Oh yes, the kind, benevolent bank is just teaching you a lesson by charging you Hmm

If you ask for a bill, it's normal to wait for the bill before paying.

Speak to them again and ask them to waive the extortionate charge.

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 20/04/2012 22:31

Even if you didn't get a paper statement you would have received an email. You are only in the right if they failed to send you a statement via email as well.

LoopyLoopsTootTootToots · 20/04/2012 22:33

No, I switched from online (because I hadn't used the CC) to paper (because I was using it).

The stupid thing is (and the reason I am angry) I had the bloody money sitting in my account, but DH wanted it to go on the CC. I think for insurance purposes?

Loopy do you mean that months interest was applied. how can you have a late payment charge if a dd is in place for the min payment? Confused

tethersend · 20/04/2012 22:33

More to the point, why did you have a bucket of bleach sat behind the door, Worra? Confused

I do the same thing worra Everything is colour coded with highlighters in my diary. It also has a pull out calendar at the back for this year and next year!

Geek, but i love it!

thisisyesterday · 20/04/2012 22:34

have to agree with the others, sorry.

regardless of whether they send you a bill or not you still have to pay up on time.
imagine hey had your address wrong or something and you didn't get a bill for a whole year.
would you still expect to not pay?

some responsibility has to lie with you i'm afraid.

and next time your DH "makes" you put something on a credit card maybe say no

LoopyLoopsTootTootToots · 20/04/2012 22:35

Ah. It would appear IMBabitU. The emails from the bank go to the email address I hardly ever look at. I do have one. Blush
