to cry because of the bank lady

We bought a new boiler a few weeks ago. DH made me put it on my credit card. I don't use it and haven't for years, because I am terrible at remembering to pay bills (DH doesn't have one). Because I'm so crap with bills, I clicked the 'switch to paper statement' button.

DH just asked me when I'd paid it off - i hadn't. So I assume the bill hasn't been sent yet. Wrong. I'd been charged. So I phone the bank, pay the full amount and ask to waive the fees as it's their fault. All they could do was reiterate that the 'charge is valid'. The lady clearly didn't understand what I was telling her (when I called this evening I first spoke to a man to pay the amount, spoke to him and he made sure it was switched to paper statements; it hadn't been changed on their system - then passed onto the lady, who kept saying 'yes, you changed to paper statements today, the charge is valid').
I just gave up and cried.

I hate fucking credit cards and I hate fucking banks. Can I complain? To whom. Tis wanky HighStreetBankingCunts btw.

so what "fee" do you want waived? the interest?

why not set the DD up to pay the whole amount?

TreacleSoda · 20/04/2012 22:35

If you have access to your statement online then you did get a bill - you got it online. They may have made a mistake, or it maybe takes longer than you expected to switch from online to paper bills, but the bottom line is that its your responsibility to make sure you pay the bill. If you paid the minimum amount, then why did they charge you? Or do you mean they charged interest?

thisisyesterday · 20/04/2012 22:36

ahh missed your last post.

trust me, i do think it sucks. has happened to me a few times too. but not the banks fault

live and learn eh (or not, in my case Blush)

LoopyLoopsTootTootToots · 20/04/2012 22:37

a bit weird of me? What the fuck does that mean?

No estatement, an email saying statement can be viewed online. Only it can't, because for some reason my laptop won't let it right now, but that's neither here nor there.

OK, my fault. I am a numpty. Don;t know why it's "a bit weird" of me though. Hmm

the bank could have been more sympathetic and listened to your query. they would have seen that you don't normally use the card and this was an unusual occurrance.
yes you should have been a bit more organised and checked the electronic mail until you were sure your paper statements were coming through.but it is certainly worth complaining if you were sure that you had updated your preferences. it is possible that your electronic bill had already been generated though by this time. you can also go to the financial ombudsman if you don't get the response you are happy with. If still unsuccessful then charge it to your DH cos he shouldn't be making you get into debt unwillingly and know again for the next time.

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 20/04/2012 22:38

X-Post. Than they have fulfilled their contractual agreements and the charge will apply I'm afraid, unless you had a screen shot to prove you'd switched to paper statements you haven't a hope in hell I'm afraid.

WorraLiberty · 20/04/2012 22:38

I had a bucket of bleach behind the door cos I was teaching the kids to bob for apples washing the kitchen Grin

wannaBe · 20/04/2012 22:39

the payment is still due though. Just because you don't get an actual bill for it doesn't make it not valid. The only person responsible for you not paying your credit card bills is you.

TreacleSoda · 20/04/2012 22:39

yes, I'm with thisisyesterday, I didn't mean to be horrible to you, but unfortunately its one of those things. It does suck, but I've done it too (did it last week in fact Grin) and I have no one to blame but myself.

spammertime · 20/04/2012 22:41

I have sympathy as its easy to look back in hindsight as to what you should have done.

Your DH did do the right thing, anything over £100 always better on a credit card as it does give you protection if eg the boiler company suddenly went bust.

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 20/04/2012 22:41

Loopy tbf, your dh was a bit of a dick.

You were already out and proud about being a dick about bills Grin

Call again and you might get someone nicer Smile, ot go to your branch, they are normally more willing to help.

Well next time it can go on his fucking card.

I am financially inept. I admit it. I don't use credit cards or store cards ever. I hate it and it upsets me. I'm not sure this is odd or weird, but I just don't like dealing with credit.

GnomeDePlume · 20/04/2012 22:44

Worra, good choice, get the kids to bob for apples in bleach. Teeth whitening, that fresh bleach taste in the mouth and nice clean splash marks all around.

Notes have been taken for Chez Plume.

I do like domestic efficiency (or was that a magazine?)

LoopyLoopsTootTootToots · 20/04/2012 22:45

Or he can get a fucking card anyway. Dick.

ah yes i see now why he wanted it on the card - in case you needed to claim the money back. i thought he just wanted temporary credit.
its not much use to you now but you could have paid the money into your credit cad account the same day as you made the purchase and you would've been charged zero interest/charges plus no risk of late payt.

send a letter into the bank - they might refund it to retain your custom as u are not a repeat "offender"

BellaVita · 20/04/2012 22:46

Like Warren said, you could have paid that bill the minute after you had used the credit car for the purchase.

We did exactly the same thing at Xmas with our boiler. I bought DH some sunglasses last week on the credit card, but transferred the money over straight away when we got home. Served its purpose for insurance reasons and I got the Tesco points too.

TreacleSoda · 20/04/2012 22:48

Loopy if you want the protection of buying things on a credit card (and it is a good idea, as it gives you some protection) then what about just paying it off immediately? I quite often buy my diesel at Tescos using my Tesco credit card, then as soon as I get in through the door of the house, I boot up the computer and make a transfer from my bank account for that amount. So, no interest charged, and the money has already left my bank account on the same day, so there is none of this false sense of security of having money in the bank that you don't really have (if you know what I mean). Would something like that work for you?

Either that or just cut it up and cancel the credit card account, as its not worth being this stressed about.

I didn't know you could do that (pay straight away). I thought the point was to have lingering debt. I've no idea why he hasn't got a card tbh.

Until this recent new card, I've always cut them up as soon as they arrived before Might do the same now.
