to cry because of the bank lady

We bought a new boiler a few weeks ago. DH made me put it on my credit card. I don't use it and haven't for years, because I am terrible at remembering to pay bills (DH doesn't have one). Because I'm so crap with bills, I clicked the 'switch to paper statement' button.

DH just asked me when I'd paid it off - i hadn't. So I assume the bill hasn't been sent yet. Wrong. I'd been charged. So I phone the bank, pay the full amount and ask to waive the fees as it's their fault. All they could do was reiterate that the 'charge is valid'. The lady clearly didn't understand what I was telling her (when I called this evening I first spoke to a man to pay the amount, spoke to him and he made sure it was switched to paper statements; it hadn't been changed on their system - then passed onto the lady, who kept saying 'yes, you changed to paper statements today, the charge is valid').
I just gave up and cried.

I hate fucking credit cards and I hate fucking banks. Can I complain? To whom. Tis wanky HighStreetBankingCunts btw.

How do you know I'm an intelligent competent woman? I certainly don't feel like it (still irrationally in tears).

Worra, good choice, get the kids to bob for apples in bleach. Teeth whitening, that fresh bleach taste in the mouth and nice clean splash marks all around

See someone finally 'gets me' Grin

It also kills nasty germs

I mean what if someone in Tescos touched them before my kids put them in their mouths? Shock

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 20/04/2012 22:52

Loopy, sorry, your last comment made me laugh so much the dog vacated the sofa. Grin

TreacleSoda · 20/04/2012 22:53

But you're not paying any interest on the credit card until after the date when the payment is due, which is why people, including you, want to pay off the full amount, so it really makes no difference if you pay it off before the due date.

Its your credit card and you can pay as much as you bloody well want off it as and when you want to Grin The one thing they won't let you do is deliberately pre-load it i.e. try to pay an amount onto it when your balance is zero, with the intention of spending it at a later date.

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 20/04/2012 22:53

Oh and everyone fucks up.

I had a £12 charge as I typed my online payment in wrong and underpaid by 19 pence

Loopy, I did say sorry. It's not often you see tearful indignation at being called intelligent.

LoopyLoopsTootTootToots · 20/04/2012 22:59

if this complaint went to the fsa they would find in your favour

maddening · 20/04/2012 23:22

sorry - the fos not fsa

TreacleSoda · 20/04/2012 23:24

I really doubt that the financial ombudsman would find in anyone's favour in a situation like this - an email reminder was sent to the OP to tell her to access her statement online, which she didn't do, for whatever reason. Its pretty clear cut really.

I had a bank apply PPI to my credit card account when I had specifically declined it, and when I complained to the banking ombudsman, they found in the bank's favour despite acknowledging that I had declined it, so I doubt they would find in a complainants favour for something like this.

LoopyLoopsTootTootToots · 20/04/2012 23:30

It doesn't matter. It's only 16 quid. It's more the knowledge feeling that I'm useless.

OP posts:
TreacleSoda · 20/04/2012 23:35

you're not useless, you made a mistake, everyone makes them. I'm super anal about money, and last week I forgot to pay my credit card bill and was charged £12. It was a stupid thing to do, but I'm not useless, and neither are you.

dreamofwhitehorses · 20/04/2012 23:42

Its awful when you make a mistake like this and you sort of know it was your fault and it makes you feel shit at yourself. I absolutely hate making mistakes with money, but don't forget EVERYONES done it. after years spent on minimum wage I equate it to wasted hours worked and used to get really upset. These days I work for myself and still make the odd mistake and bad decision that I get stressed with myself about. The only way move on from beating yourself up about it is to promise that you'll learn from it and not do it again. See it as a valuable lesson and then you can move on.

ethelb · 20/04/2012 23:49

"loopy I pad two days late once and pointed out that I hadn't made the mistake before and they waived the fee.

Could you go to the bank and speak to the manager? They are often more sympathetic. Plus if they didn't send the right bill it is their fault.

At least ask them to not let it affect your credit rating. They can do thta.

LoopyLoopsTootTootToots · 20/04/2012 23:53

It won't affect that will it? It's interest charges not late payment.

Stupid lazy banks aren't open on the weekends here. I can't go in the week. Will have to wait until half term.

OP posts:
LoopyLoopsTootTootToots · 20/04/2012 23:53

And thank you all for making me feel better. :)

OP posts:
ethelb · 20/04/2012 23:55

This is just interest charges!? Not, they won't fuss about that with your credit rating. If anything having a credit history improves your credit rating

WorraLiberty · 20/04/2012 23:57

How is it going to affect the credit rating if the OP made the minimum payment?

We're talking about £16 here....just interest because the mistake meant the whole balance wasn't paid off.

Or am I missing something?

ethelb · 20/04/2012 23:58

@worra, no I missed something. i didn't realise this was just interest!
