"New Face of Ferrero" competition - only white children should apply?

RedApple11 · 20/04/2012 14:17

Just bought a pack of Ferrero treats for my DD and was shocked at what looks like a blatantly discriminatory campaign. The new "Faces of Ferrero" (ie, the winning children whose images will be used to promote Ferrero products) are all white and fair featured. Five boys, one girls. Are only fair white children attractive enough to be the Face of Ferrero then?

I contacted Ferrero about this and was told:

"We would like to stress that the competition was judged purely on the basis of the children's responses to the question which was: "what they want to be when they grow up and why?".

So I investigated further and discovered that actually, what a crock that was. In fact, all entrants were required to upload their children's photos in order to have a valid entry and these images were then displayed in a gallery. See www.faceofkinder.com/terms.php and scroll down to section 9.3 which states:

"The photograph must have been taken within the last 6 months before it is sent as an entry in the competition. The child must be fully clothed. Whilst entrants may crop and enlarge photographs, they must not submit a photograph which has been substantially altered. By entering into the competition, the entrant agrees that the promoter can visit the child to check that the photograph is an accurate representation of him or her. No changes will be permitted to photographs accepted into the Gallery after the voting period opens on 30th May."

Anyway, the wonderfully white and photogenic winners can all be found here: www.faceofkinder.com/gallery.php

Don't get me wrong, these kids are all gorgeous and this isn't sour grapes - I had no idea about this competition and wouldn't have entered my DD into it anyway.

That said, I think it's outragous that in this day and age, a company like Ferrero can get away with promoting the idea that only fair white children are attractive enough to be the Face of Ferrero. This seems wrong on so many levels.

yeah but I don't think they sell it at Spar lol

TheAvocadoOfWisdom · 20/04/2012 18:18

FFS OP, go and learn some probability.

If you're picking 6 kids at random from a group of 5000, in a population where 91% are white, then

the probability of 6 white kids is 0.568 i.e. 56.8%. (So odds on they'll be all white.)
the probability of 5 white kids is 0.337, i.e. 33.7%
the probability of 4 white kids is 0.083 i.e. 8.3%
the probability of 3 white kids is 0.011 i.e. 1.1%
the probability of 2 white kids is 0.008 i.e. 0.8%
the probability of 1 white kid is 0.0001 i.e. 0.01%
the probability of 0 white kids is 0.0000005 i.e. 0.00005%

so get a fucking grip.

tantrumsandballoons · 20/04/2012 18:19

I could use some too- but only if there is a multicultural mix of children advertising it.

thatisall · 20/04/2012 18:25

tantrums quite right

Mayisout · 20/04/2012 18:33

I'm with you on this RedApple. Though as one of the photos is not even in focus there is a possibility that hardly anyone entered.

It's suspicious that they lied to you about why the kids were selected.

the probability of 6 white kids is 0.568 i.e. 56.8%.

Yeah but small odds. Anyway many posters are convinced that some of the kids are not 'white' but if they are not white then the odds of them being something other than black or asian is miniscule as those non-white but not black or asian make a miniscule proportion of the population. So things do look skewed.

tantrumsandballoons · 20/04/2012 18:35

Who lied?
Who?

Why would anyone lie?
Why would they pretend that people won if they didn't?
Why are you surprised that in a majority white British country the winners of a small competition were all white?

WHY DO YOU CARE SO MUCH?

Don't look at the website if it offends you.

LentillyFart · 20/04/2012 18:36

Bugger me bandy - is this shit still going on? Really y'all - it's time to stop now. It's not as though this discussion is being had with a rational clear thinking person is it? Nothing anyone is saying is making the slightest bit of difference to the unhinged opinion of the OP - and nor will it.

hathorkicksass · 20/04/2012 18:37

D'you know what.

My uncle just died.

From a massive heart attack.

He has a grandchild on the way he will never see.

My aunt is in pieces, my cousins are in pieces.

That is worth being upset about.

This shit you're worrying about - it's flyshit

Seriously, go and get a grip.

tantrumsandballoons · 20/04/2012 18:37

Small odds??? 56.8% is small odds?

And if the chances of children being anything other than black or Asian are minuscule, then you have just clarified the point we have all been making.

FFS

TheAvocadoOfWisdom · 20/04/2012 18:38

Mayisout are you hard of understanding in the probability department?

55.8% is not small odds! It's a bit over 50-50. So if the competition was run at random then chances are 6 white kids would win. If the competition was run like this for several years and each time 6 white kids won, then you could say that something was wrong.

But if you were told there's a 56% chance of rain today, are you saying that there's small odds it'll rain, so I won't take an umbrella??

tantrumsandballoons · 20/04/2012 18:38

Hathor I'm so sorry for your loss

hathorkicksass · 20/04/2012 18:39

Thank you tantums it wasn't supposed to be a hijack

LentillyFart · 20/04/2012 18:39

Sorry hathor - and your point is very very valid and one the OP might do well to consider.

tantrumsandballoons · 20/04/2012 18:41

I think this should be bloody hijacked, it's insane.

People think 50-50 is small odds and all the winners in an English competition should be Chinese or some other stupidity

Hope you and your family are doing ok.

PurpleRomanesco · 20/04/2012 18:42

Very sorry to hear about your uncle hathor.

Hijack away, It's a stupid thread anyway.

hathorkicksass · 20/04/2012 18:44

He was one of the bet people ever in the whole world.

I am beyond gutted.

hathorkicksass · 20/04/2012 18:44

best. not bet.

PurpleRomanesco · 20/04/2012 18:48

It's a very sad thing and you are just right to put things into perspective, I fear it will be lost on the OP though.

I wish you are your family the best right now.

hathorkicksass · 20/04/2012 18:51

Thank you.

As I said it wasn't meant to be a hijack.

Just, OP, seriously, go and get some perspective. And a grip.

WhiteShores · 20/04/2012 18:55

Mayisout There is absolutely no proof, or even indication that they lied. Several posters here have given very good reason why a photo might be required and form no part of the selection process.

As TheAvacado pointed out, the chances of 6 white kids all being chose is more than 50%, which means it was more likely to happen than not.

hathor I am so, so sorry for your loss. Sad

WhiteShores · 20/04/2012 18:56

Don't know whats up with my typing... reasons and chosen. Confused

hathorkicksass · 20/04/2012 18:57

Mine is shocking lol

Mayisout · 20/04/2012 18:57

Jeesh --- have you guys got nothing better to do with your time?

55.8% is not small odds! It's a bit over 50-50.

Yes, it's a bit.................a.........bit.............A .........BIT.

A BIT is not a lot, A BIT is a little hence a bit over 50:50 is only a little over equal odds.

The odds of a non-white person in the UK being chosen who is not asian or black is miniscule - despite this miniscule possibility there is one or more non-white kids in the six (in the view of other previous posters) so despite the stats of 56.8% or whatever it was stated by the 'expert' above her stats have been proven not to be correct in this case BECAUSE of the inclusion of the non-white kid/s.

WhiteShores · 20/04/2012 19:04

No one is saying the outcomes always match the statistics 100%, but they are more likely to.

Nobody knows whether those children (who appear to be non-white to some, not to me I have to say) in fact consider themselves as non-white and would mark themselves as such on a census poll (its certainly debatable).

It would be more reasonable to query discrimination if there were... say 20 winners and they were all white.

But 6 winners all being white from a sample of 5000 is perfectly reasonable and representative.

tantrumsandballoons · 20/04/2012 19:04

I have no clue what you are talking about tbh?
