"New Face of Ferrero" competition - only white children should apply?

RedApple11 · 20/04/2012 14:17

Just bought a pack of Ferrero treats for my DD and was shocked at what looks like a blatantly discriminatory campaign. The new "Faces of Ferrero" (ie, the winning children whose images will be used to promote Ferrero products) are all white and fair featured. Five boys, one girls. Are only fair white children attractive enough to be the Face of Ferrero then?

I contacted Ferrero about this and was told:

"We would like to stress that the competition was judged purely on the basis of the children's responses to the question which was: "what they want to be when they grow up and why?".

So I investigated further and discovered that actually, what a crock that was. In fact, all entrants were required to upload their children's photos in order to have a valid entry and these images were then displayed in a gallery. See www.faceofkinder.com/terms.php and scroll down to section 9.3 which states:

"The photograph must have been taken within the last 6 months before it is sent as an entry in the competition. The child must be fully clothed. Whilst entrants may crop and enlarge photographs, they must not submit a photograph which has been substantially altered. By entering into the competition, the entrant agrees that the promoter can visit the child to check that the photograph is an accurate representation of him or her. No changes will be permitted to photographs accepted into the Gallery after the voting period opens on 30th May."

Anyway, the wonderfully white and photogenic winners can all be found here: www.faceofkinder.com/gallery.php

Don't get me wrong, these kids are all gorgeous and this isn't sour grapes - I had no idea about this competition and wouldn't have entered my DD into it anyway.

That said, I think it's outragous that in this day and age, a company like Ferrero can get away with promoting the idea that only fair white children are attractive enough to be the Face of Ferrero. This seems wrong on so many levels.

But all the kids are white?!?
I dont recall anyone saying they wasn't.

What percentage of the losers were white do you think may?
I'm guessing quite high?

LentillyFart · 20/04/2012 19:07

mayisout - what the actual fuck are you blathering about now?

tantrumsandballoons · 20/04/2012 19:08

Hard to understand isn't it lentil??!!

WhiteShores · 20/04/2012 19:09

A couple of people upthread said they thought some of the children had more olive-y skin, which doesn't mean they're not white, but I think what mayisout is referring to.

Certainly, based on those photos, I would say they are all white, and the OP considers them all white (which is the basis of her complaint).

Mayisout · 20/04/2012 19:14

Hard to understand isn't it lentil??!!

Not really, probably depends on your grasp of maths.

MrGin · 20/04/2012 19:17

A black fireman says he was abused and tasered by the Met in the news today.

That is a subject worth spending nine pages on.

Not a flimsy argument about a chocolate company's racist kids comp.

BananasInBloomers · 20/04/2012 19:18

I object to being described as white. I am not white I am more of a peachy-pink colour.

WhiteShores · 20/04/2012 19:18

Mayisout You're the only one that seems to think an outcome is still surprising (and discriminatory), when it has over 50% odds randomly.

tantrumsandballoons · 20/04/2012 19:19

My grasp of maths?
I would say its more your grasp of the English language and common sense that's the issue?

WhiteShores · 20/04/2012 19:20

Bananas I thought bananas were yellow! Wink Grin

tantrumsandballoons · 20/04/2012 19:22

Now you are being racist about GREEN bananas.
I'm going to phone up and complain :(

LentillyFart · 20/04/2012 19:23

Amen tantrums - bloody AMEN! Grin

WhiteShores · 20/04/2012 19:25

Haha, omg, I am so embarrased. Blush

Grin
BananasInBloomers · 20/04/2012 19:27

How very dare you WhiteShores. I am a bruised banana that the OP over looked in T?sco. Only unblemished curved yellow bananas need apply to be the fruit of her fruit bowl.

WhiteShores · 20/04/2012 19:29

takes a look at her own fruit bowl

runs out to buy at least one green and one brown banana immediately!

WhiteShores · 20/04/2012 19:29

Just one of each mind... you know, just to prove I'm not. Wink

tantrumsandballoons · 20/04/2012 19:31

Multicultural fruit!!
What a good idea :)

BananasInBloomers · 20/04/2012 19:32

Don't forget red, green and golden apples. And grapes, green, black, seedless and seeded. And jaffa oranges.

tantrumsandballoons · 20/04/2012 19:35

Don't forget all the different varietys of melons and mangoes!

TheBigJessie · 20/04/2012 19:36

As far as I can make out, the competition runs like this:

Stage 1: people enter their children.

Stage 2: photos and childhood ambition of all entrants are hosted on the Kinder website. The general public is invited to vote for their favoured child.

Stage 3: family members of entrants canvass members of internet forums, and thus advertise Kinder chocolate for free.

Stage 4: people everywhere buy more chocolate, after seeing yummymummy84's forum post.

Stage 5: the fifty highest ranked children go through to the next round, where a Kinder board of judges chooses the 6 most creative entries.

In my opinion, this competition discriminates against children who don't have a wide extended family with internet access or a social network of internet-savvy people! If racism is playing a part, it's before stage 5. It's during the part where the public vote! What should the judges do? Override the public vote and substitute some black/Asian losing kids for some of the white kids that went through to the final round?

thatisall · 20/04/2012 19:39

whiteshores that was me with the olivey skin comment. What I meant is that one or two look as though they may be from hispanic decent or even have dark skin somewhere in their genetic make up. Actually that's a good question for the OP

Given that there are so many mixed race children out there....what percentage white do they have to be to be considered part of the racist movement of Kinder???

thatisall · 20/04/2012 19:40

Hathor sorry for your loss, that really and truly sucks.

BananasInBloomers · 20/04/2012 19:40

tantrums are you putting a price on diversity? Shock

tantrumsandballoons · 20/04/2012 19:41

Yes, Jessie there can be no public vote as that is racist.
It is apparently far less racist to pick winners on skin colour, apparently THAT is fair?

tantrumsandballoons · 20/04/2012 19:42

And yes I REFUSE to pay out my yearly salary on multicultural fruit :)
