"New Face of Ferrero" competition - only white children should apply?

RedApple11 · 20/04/2012 14:17

Just bought a pack of Ferrero treats for my DD and was shocked at what looks like a blatantly discriminatory campaign. The new "Faces of Ferrero" (ie, the winning children whose images will be used to promote Ferrero products) are all white and fair featured. Five boys, one girls. Are only fair white children attractive enough to be the Face of Ferrero then?

I contacted Ferrero about this and was told:

"We would like to stress that the competition was judged purely on the basis of the children's responses to the question which was: "what they want to be when they grow up and why?".

So I investigated further and discovered that actually, what a crock that was. In fact, all entrants were required to upload their children's photos in order to have a valid entry and these images were then displayed in a gallery. See www.faceofkinder.com/terms.php and scroll down to section 9.3 which states:

"The photograph must have been taken within the last 6 months before it is sent as an entry in the competition. The child must be fully clothed. Whilst entrants may crop and enlarge photographs, they must not submit a photograph which has been substantially altered. By entering into the competition, the entrant agrees that the promoter can visit the child to check that the photograph is an accurate representation of him or her. No changes will be permitted to photographs accepted into the Gallery after the voting period opens on 30th May."

Anyway, the wonderfully white and photogenic winners can all be found here: www.faceofkinder.com/gallery.php

Don't get me wrong, these kids are all gorgeous and this isn't sour grapes - I had no idea about this competition and wouldn't have entered my DD into it anyway.

That said, I think it's outragous that in this day and age, a company like Ferrero can get away with promoting the idea that only fair white children are attractive enough to be the Face of Ferrero. This seems wrong on so many levels.

There are only 6 children there. So hardly earth shattering that the variety of whatever charactersitic feature isn't wide-ranging. I see only 1 girl, no disabled children sfayct and who knows if any are from single-parent families or are rich or poor!

I think Jack is my fave as he wants to make a robot to clean for his Mum. ahhhhhh

I can see your point, but think you are possibly getting it out of proportion! And as Don says you don't know who entered.

charitygirl · 20/04/2012 14:30

Ah RedApple11 you forgot one of the first rules of Mumsnet. Whatever it is, it's never racism. We live in a tolerant society, don't you know.

Angry
ginmakesitallok · 20/04/2012 14:30

Photo required as it's a "face of" competition and to make sure that little Molly 6, isn't really 54 year old Bob.

Psammead · 20/04/2012 14:31

Rainbow coloured, surely Sarah.

ginmakesitallok · 20/04/2012 14:32

charitygirl - nonsense. I've seen lots of occasions on MN where racist behaviour has been identified/challenged. I think one of the rules (of life not MN) is that it's not always an ism.

thatisall · 20/04/2012 14:32

op have you looked at the rest of their website?? There are so many beautiful children of colour that they could almost be accused of discriminating against white children.

I think you're seeing racism when everyone else is just seeing children

DurhamDurham · 20/04/2012 14:32

Racism is horrific but really, you are scraping the barrel with this one.

I expect you had to upload a photo to prove there was an actual child entering the competition (rather than a rather odd 55 year old bloke!!)

LentillyFart · 20/04/2012 14:33

Speak of the devil..............

Grin

Clearly the OP entered her child and it didn't even come close to winning. Only possible solution - cry racism. Pfffffft.

NationalLottie · 20/04/2012 14:33

lovely kids. get over yourself

Heyyyho · 20/04/2012 14:34

It's just a bit of fun fgs!

picnicbasketcase · 20/04/2012 14:35

So, nowhere did they actually say it's for white children only then? Because yes, that would be racist if they had. HTH.

YusMilady · 20/04/2012 14:36

YABU. And Thomas is adorbs

SarahStratton · 20/04/2012 14:36

Oh come on, this is prime bunfight territory, we can do better than this. :(

hathorkicksass · 20/04/2012 14:36

What about disabled children?

What about children from single parent families?

What about children who think they aren't children but dogs? Or cats? Or hamsters?

What about dogs and cats and hamsters actually. Why can't they be the face of Ferrero?

The photo is to make sure they are actually children and not a hairy handed 57 year old trucker called Dave.

And, there's only one girl. Should really be 50/50 (or 104/100 or whatever the actual percentages are)

This >>>> is a life. I suggest you get one.

OP, the last time I saw a leaflet advertising the Scouts, the 'face' of the Scouting movement on the front of that leaflet was a Muslim girl.

Is that because only Muslim girls are allowed to join the Scouts? Of course not, how ridiculous!

Oh I tried to find the leaflet, but couldn't. But this is the publicity page of the scout website www2.scouts.org.uk/recruit/posters.html.

What? White kids aren't allowed to join the Scouts any more? Nor black kids? Actually, nor girls, or a whole host of other people. In fact, perhaps only these to chaps are allowed to join. And I suspect one of them might be too old!

RedApple11 · 20/04/2012 14:43

FACTS:
(1) Photos were an essential part of the entry process and were used in a gallery on the site
(2) Independent judges selected the winning 6 children
(3) Over 5000 children entered
(4) All 6 winners were white (five boys, one girl)

hathorkicksass · 20/04/2012 14:43

And your point is?

giveitago · 20/04/2012 14:44

Kind of looks odd to me if you put it that way in terms of 'faces' of this european company.

None of those kids look my me or mine and I am a Brit but you don't know who entered their kids for competition.

PurpleRomanesco · 20/04/2012 14:44

How racist of them!

Move along OP...

hathorkicksass · 20/04/2012 14:46

In order to prove racism you would need the photos of all the children who entered.

RedApple11 · 20/04/2012 14:46

Regards the scouts, I imagine they used a girl from an ethnic minority to try and promote inclusion. Scouts is traditionally associated with boys.

Dettol protects FACT! < as relevant as your facts

WilsonFrickett · 20/04/2012 14:49

Given Jack's photo is completely out of focus and really a bit rubbish - you can barely see there's a child there - would suggest they weren't judged on their photos...
