to have declined a dietician untill my morning sickness eases a bit?

Hoebag · 20/04/2012 08:56

as a pg woman with a bigger bmi I have been referred to a dietician or I can be referred.

I asked the midwife would this require more appointments and she said yes, I aid to her that I would happily do it but not yet.

I'm suffering severely with morning sickness , 3-5 times a day and it impairs how long I can stand up for somedays I'm forced to crawl around.
and I'm purely relying on bands for relief. so attending more appointments may sometimes not be possible.
plus I'll just be regurgitating what I eat.

She was quite put out saying 'its irresponsible to wait' but I do really dont see another option as they wont prescribe me anything.

AIBU to decline this until my MS eases a bit??

I don't really see another option. **

Not at all.

I was referred because my BMI was one above. My morning sickness was so bad I was eating just to stay alive and stop myself bringing up bile. I told the dietician I was quite happy thank you very much, and I won't be needing their services. Jeez if I was dragging a couple of saddlebags around, I could understand it.

BillyBollyBandy · 20/04/2012 09:02

I don't see that waiting a few weeks will make a big difference, and if you are being sick then your bmi will be going down anyway - although clearly not in a healthy way!

Perhaps you could have your appointments over the phone?

BTW sliming world is very good for pregnancy as it is very much large quantities of healthy food, and when I had the dd's I had hollow legs!

BillyBollyBandy · 20/04/2012 09:03

Sorry should have said - my BMI is 32 so know where you are coming from

debka · 20/04/2012 09:03

YABU.

I was referred to a dietician during pg due to high BMI. The appt came through 2 months after I gave birth. I was induced at 40 weeks with a 10lb 6 baby due to undiagnosed gestational diabetes.

Just say yes- perhaps your appointment will come through before your due date!

Hoebag · 20/04/2012 09:11

werent you given a gtt test debka?

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 20/04/2012 09:13

I think YABU in a way not to accept the referral now and see how the sickness is when the appointment comes around.

If I remember rightly, you said before you're unhappy with your weight and I think it was your Dad who was worried about the baby?

Apologies if I've got the wrong person Blush

But I'd accept and see the dietitian if your can when the time comes.

Hoebag · 20/04/2012 09:15

How long can appointments take to come I was under the impression you go alot straight away??

OP posts:
debka · 20/04/2012 09:16

Yes, at 28 weeks which I scraped through.

Retested at 39 weeks- an epic fail Grin

DD2 is a healthy happy 14mo now, and I've lost 5st so far doing SW Shock

Mythical · 20/04/2012 09:17

None of my midwives mentioned anything like that? Is it standard practice to get referred now? Confused I assume it depends on where you live as I don't see another explanation - I did have the gtt test but I would've had that anyway due to family history.
I think she was a bit rude to say it's irresponsible to wait!

WorraLiberty · 20/04/2012 09:17

I suppose it depends on the area and your personal need?

I'm not sure, but once you're referred you can always reschedule appointments if you're honking up at the time.

entropygirl · 20/04/2012 09:19

If you dont want advice then dont take the referral. If you think you may want the advice in the future once you have an actual choice over what goes in and stays in then I would accept the referral. If it comes through too quickly and your are bedridden on the day then just cancel due to ill health.

WhaleOilBeefHookedIWill · 20/04/2012 09:20

If you are as sick as you say you need to be having a chat with your GP tbh

Hoebag · 20/04/2012 09:22

all big bmiers are given one now things have changed quite alot in last 2 years.

I might ask them how it would work I seem to have the wrong end of the stick??.

I thought it was rude especially as I havent been offered meds, having days where I can't physically walk plus small toddler is apparently not severe

OP posts:
laptopdancer · 20/04/2012 09:26

I would just accept and phone the dietitian or dept if you are unwell. They could give you a phone review just to check in on you until its suitable for you to come in. Of all people, dietitians working in antenatal care understand how ill some patients can get. They would be quite used to it (and making later in the day appts).

Mythical · 20/04/2012 09:27

I'm still pregnant though (38 weeks)
I think if it takes such a long time to be referred might be worth just saying yes to it and see how you feel when you get there. I'm sure you can always cancel

WhaleOilBeefHookedIWill · 20/04/2012 09:32

Go back to the doctors again.I NEEDED anti emetics to function, as like you not doing a lot/sleeping helped matters but with a toddler and a job wasnt at all feasible

entropygirl · 20/04/2012 09:35

hoebag fuck the not severe thing. It clearly is and you need to make sure they give you treatment!

What worked for me was giving up. I stopped even trying to eat and then went to out of hours at the hospital. Got admitted with ketones and got fixed up. If GP's are being an arse (and you have tried a couple of times) then I would go over their head....

entropygirl · 20/04/2012 09:37

hoebag oh and also do NOT try and stick it out on the basis that if will only last a couple of months. I was puking all the way through and that is nowhere near uncommon.

Empusa · 20/04/2012 09:44

Doctors don't seem to be keen on giving out anti-emetics, you have to ask for them, you sound like you are struggling, don't suffer unnecessarily!

peekabooby · 20/04/2012 09:45

If you are prescribed antiemetics, please do your own research as some have quite horrendous side affects.

I would accept the referral, you can always rearrange apps if your too sick, some foods might help with the nausea and they will be able to advise you.

Hope your feeling better soon.

Babieseverywhere · 20/04/2012 09:49

I have not been referred to a dietician. I would of liked to have been referred but guessing it is too late now.

Due to sickness in first trimester, I am still a couple of lbs lighter than my pre pregnancy weight at 24 weeks pregnant and my BMI is a smidge under 35. Blush

Maybe I wasn't referred as the midwife knew I was already trying to improve my diet and had lost 3.5 stone before falling pregnant this time. Still a long way to go mind but that will have to wait until little one is here at summer.

Hoebag · 20/04/2012 09:59

What side effects peekaboo??

yeah I think I'll ask more about it.

OP posts:
Hoebag · 20/04/2012 10:00

I was a bit dismissed by my first gp I may request to see another.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 20/04/2012 10:10

Oh Hoebag I've just read your bmi on another thread and that puts you in the morbidly obese category Sad

Therefore, I don't honestly think the MW was being rude at all, just very concerned for you and the baby.

I would definitely take the referral and try your hardest to make them understand that as sick as you are, you want their support but they'll have to try and meet you half way with the appointments if they can.
