To not agree with MIL that DD (6) should be responsible for naming the baby when its born?

Just that really. Consider some of the names her toys have - snowy, twilight, cuddles, pinky, clucky and other such delights and tell me I am not being unreasonable.

I have no problem with her contributing ideas - indeed the list currently includes

bubbles
Joanna (name of best friend at school)
Mrs X (name of her much loved reception teacher)
Granny (because it would be nice to call baby after MIL)
or simply Baby

But I am not sure she should have the final say!!

DD is three and says her babies are going to be called Rose and Cat.

Quite nice I think.

Dd was absolutely dead set on Ros, which is actually quite a nice name. But not sure that ds would have liked it. Hmm

aw, i was almost 5 when my sister was born and remember being devastated that my obviously evil parents wouldn't called her Penelope-Pitstop-Hongkong-Fooey-Victoria-Fiona-Anne. They gave her Anne as a middle name to please me (I still wasn't happy - Hongkong-Fooey would have been MUCH more original :) )

I discussed baby names with my DS before his sister arrived. I said I liked Lucy and Sophie. At the hospital I said to my DH " we will have to think of a name", my DH said that my son had already decided and it was going to be Sophie which was actually my favourite.

Mrs X

Was she Malcolm's wife?

Booette · 20/04/2012 23:56

Vagina Bubbles is great!!!

If I'd let DS1 choose his brothers names I'd now have Marmalade, Rainbow Boy, Rainbow Girl and Wayne. DS1 was convinced I was having boy/girl twins despite the scan saying boys hence the Rainbow Boy & Rainbow Girl!

When i was taken to see my new baby brother at the hospital, i immediately said: "it's a Soffice!" after inspecting him. I was 2 years old and i've no idea what that means, but it is a long standing nickname in the family to this day.
I was pleased that the baby (officially named Edward by my parents) decided to 'give' me a bag of magnetic alphabet letters for the fridge. I subsequently named myself 'Fooey'.

valiumredhead · 18/09/2012 12:50

I named my sister Grin

Bread, Ricky Gervais and Bicycle. Brilliant suggestions, kids, well done.

Is faintpinkline still around? I'd love to know what happened.

Flobbadobs · 18/09/2012 13:24

We let our DC's name our third, gently steered them to ames we liked and went with the end result. DD chose her middle name and we do occasionally get "really? Is that really what you called her?" but it suts her and doesn't sound like we were trying too hard.
Although I am very tempted to change it by deed poll to Vagina Bubbles...

ihearttc · 18/09/2012 13:24

We did actually let DS1 name DS2...he was nearly 6 at the time.

We got a list of 3 names that we liked and asked him to pick one for his first name and then got another list of 3 names and asked him to pick one for his middle name.

That way he felt like he was part of it all but we got to actually chose the names first though!

He thought it was great bless him and I hope when he gets older DS2 will thank him for the name that he chose!

glenthebattleostrich · 18/09/2012 13:54

I was nearly called Thomas annie claribel because of my big brothers obsession with Thomas the Tank Engine, as it is my middle name is Annie because he'd been promised he could name me.

MrsBovary · 18/09/2012 13:58

Gosh no! When making final decision for (then) baby dd, my six year old daughter offered up the name Gorilla.

hatsybatsy · 18/09/2012 16:08

was nearly 5 when dsis was born - was very into a book where one character was called Catherine (my names0, another Elizabeth and another Jonathan.

Badgered my parenst throughout the pregnancy and lo and behold, my little sister was named Elizabeth!!!

did not let ds have a say when dd was born - Thomas, Percy, Henry et al wouldn't really have suited her!!
