To think that the Olympic organisation is run by money grubbing gits!

Both really out of order in my opinion.

Yes, if sponsors hadn't had to pay so much for their sponsorship in the first place, they wouldn't be so keen to take advantage of the rather draconian branding laws (not rules): see here.

And as for the cost of the Games, the reason sponsorship money is so "needed"? It seems a combination of government hubris and the Olymoic Committee's being rather, er... demanding....?

Hopandaskip · 18/04/2012 16:20

seriously? If you go to the games you can't post a snap of you and your friend on Facebook? Are they insane?

CommanderShepard · 18/04/2012 16:25

YABU to have only just noticed Wink

Dawndonna · 18/04/2012 21:52

Hop Yep, seriously!

Agreed!

"Oh yes, a lovely London Olympics in a poor area. That will be smashing. What's that? You want us to stay there? Overnight? Are you nuts - it's dangerous out East - we're staying on Park Lane....Yes, you are going to pay for it. And yes, you will have to hand over all your bus lanes to us so we can have leisurely breakfasts and still get to the events in time"

Meglet · 18/04/2012 22:05

Yanbu.

How on earth are they going to stop me putting the photos on FB?

Tossers.

Sorry, just had to add this lovely piece of complete idiocy!

What?? they want to stop us posting pics??? this would be impossible to police!

ragged · 19/04/2012 17:44

From what I can make out it's only the chosen volunteers ("Games Makers") who are required to not post details to FB, and to abide by those conditions. They aren't going to try to control the spectators.

Friend has an adult son who is performing in the village (was selected to do so, again), for free, no expenses paid, the thing is, he is going to struggle to afford it. Will have to camp with friends, live on white bread & beans, & give up 4 weeks of earnings elsewhere.

It's an elitist event for the elite. What did anyone else expect?

EdithWeston · 19/04/2012 17:51

I've recently bought some Olympic merchandise to send to friends overseas before the postage rates go up. Most is overpriced tat, the rest is overpriced average stuff. Pity.

lolajane2009 · 19/04/2012 18:23

am i the only one not interested and thinking in the financial climate it is a huge waste of money.

Dawndonna · 19/04/2012 19:07

No, lola, I think it's abominable that the government are happy to fund this whilst taking money from those who need it most.

OP posts:
Meglet · 19/04/2012 19:26

The merchandise is very expensive.

I do like the stamps though.

EdithWeston · 19/04/2012 19:33

The funding was sorted out in broad terms for the bid, and in detail immediately after London won in 2005. The current Government had nothing to do with signing up to pay for all this; nor did Boris.

EmilyPollifaxInnocentTourist · 19/04/2012 19:42

YANBU. It's ridiculous.

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 19/04/2012 22:10

Also, they are going on about it promoting sport and the legacy to our youth of having that dream. Yet all the advertising and food at the site appears to be for fast foods and alcohol!

iloveACK · 19/04/2012 22:17

I love the Olympics & wish everyone would get behind them. We are where we are, so the money is committed regardless (& by the previous Govt I believe). They will (hopefully) be a great showcase for our country & our athletes will do us proud.

Roll on London 2012 Grin

iklboo · 19/04/2012 22:26

Has anyone watched the comedy show Twenty Twelve? It's priceless (and seems to cover most of the points on this thread) Grin

AThingInYourLife · 19/04/2012 22:32

I love Twenty Twelve :)

The Olympics is a hubristic folly that brings nothing good to anyone. There will be no "legacy" other than the debt we'll be left to pay off.

I bet the Parisians (benefiting from the fact that tourists are avoiding London this year) are laughing their arses off.

Whatmeworry · 19/04/2012 22:47

You've only realised that now - after the ticket scams, budget overruns, years topay it back, shutting off London for the officials etc etc???.

I think the funniest is the olympic logos looks like Liza Simpson giving a blowjob, and a stiff cock. :o
