to wonder why all maternity clothes are so blinking long?

I'm pregnant, I haven't suddenly got 6 inches taller!

I am 5 foot 1, size 12 normally and at the awkward normal clothes too small maternity clothes too big stage. But not just are they too big in the tmmy (understandable) but everything is down past my knees! I ordered some tops from New look which came yesterday and I could have worn them as dresses.

Do all maternity clothes manufacturers think pregnant women are 6 foot tall?

Any tips for surviving the in-between phase much appreciated- I have one bump band but am not really sure it works, I feel a bit trussed up as I'm not used to the layered look.

TIA

they are horrible aren't they? fine for big tall lasses who can pull off bellow knee stuff but not for the rest of us

H&M's normal non maternity ines have lots of nice stretchy materials, just have a play with sizes

FuntimeFelicity · 17/04/2012 10:34

I had the same problem (5' tall). I ended buying much more roomy normal tops in style that could take a bump until I was in the third trimester.

Trousers were a nightmare though Hmm.

jodidi · 17/04/2012 10:34

I had the opposite problem as I am 5'10", so most tops didn't meet the trousers, and the trousers didn't quite meet my ankles. Trousers were more easily solved as some places do different lengths. Unfortunately I don't have to worry about maternity clothes any more, so am back to my normal clothes.

notcitrus · 17/04/2012 10:36

Just get some ordinary non-preg long tops. Apart from some trousers, maternity clothes are only for your last couple months.

Stretchy skirts and loose dresses are great for summer - again not maternity ones.
I had a bump band this time which was nice for extra warmth in the depths of winter but for my previous pregnancy over summer velcro sandals and comfy bras with a dress or skirt/tshirt were all I really needed.

startail · 17/04/2012 10:40

My 4'11" DF just wore the sort of skirt/dresses with the wide band of sheering elastic at the top.

By the time they were pulled over her bump they were the length they'd be on A taller non pregnant person.

farmerswifey · 17/04/2012 10:57

The Next Directory have lots of petite maternity wear and I've just received my order of gorgeous maternity tops from Mamasandpapas, all a nice length on my 5"2 body.

Hope you find something.

MediumOrchid · 17/04/2012 11:04

It's so annoying, isn't it, I'm 5 foot 2 and I've had so much trouble finding maternity trousers. It's like they forget that petite people get pregnant too, and you can either have petite clothes, or maternity, but not both!

I've found that New Look actually have the best materntity range on the high street, it's not somewhere I've shopped for a while but they have a good range of clothes in a variety of lengths (trousers, anyway).

elliejjtiny · 17/04/2012 11:09

I had the same problem, my wedding dress had to be taken up about a foot too. I found new look was the best for clothes that fitted and I also had a skirt with an elastic waist from evans that was better than my maternity clothes.

buxton150 · 17/04/2012 11:14

Very annoying. Even worse when you are a size 20 too. So its even harder to just go up a size. At least summer's coming so I can wear dresses/skirts etc.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 17/04/2012 11:23

Same as jodidi - I'm 5'9 and nothing covers my bump, it all stops at about belly button level.

Aworryingtrend · 17/04/2012 12:11

Thanks for the tips. it sounds as if I will have to actually go and try things on instead of haphazardly ordering things online which has not worked well for me thus far!

They will "shrink" a bit when your bump is big as it will make the fabric rise up iyswim - but I agree, the ones I've seen are a bit on the long side too. Maybe they expect us to develop heiffer-like thighs??

HappyAsEyeAm · 17/04/2012 12:59

I am 5'1" and pregnant too. I have had problems finding petite clothes that fit, and that I like, for years, and being pregnant massively diminished my chances! These are the clothes that I have found work well on someone of my height:

Isabella Oliver - but only their ruched T, ruched vest top and wrap around dress. Everything else seemed massively long.

New Look for jeans - they come in different leg lengths. 28", 30" and 32". I have some 28" for when I wear flats and some 30" for when I wear a small hell. But I don't find that one pair can last a whole pregnancy - I have had to size up (but then again, I have put on nearly 3 stone).

JoJo Maman Bebe - their skirts all fit well. They are mini skirts to start off with (I biught from the Autumn/Winter collection though - two kilt type skirts and one tweed looking straight skirt)

Next - yoga pants and combat type trousers. I have just shortened them and they haven't lost their line.

ceeveebee · 17/04/2012 13:07

Aworryingtrend, I am exactly same size and height as you, I have a few pairs of short leg maternity trousers from next, dorothy Perkins from my recent and definitely last pregnancy! You're welcome to have them (for free) if you want? If you are interested PM me and we can arrange postage

SoundOfHerWings · 17/04/2012 13:11

I had this problem too- 5' tall and a size 6-8 normally. I found maternity clothes were just huge in every way- too long, trousers dragging on the floor and cut as if they expected my arse to have grown just as huge as my bump did. I actually cried on my uni advisor because I had a practical exam requiring professional dress at 30 weeks pregnant, had spent the whole weekend trying on trousers, and none of them fit. One of my more hormonal moments. Blush

PestoPenguin · 17/04/2012 13:11

I'm 5 foot 4 and find most tops, including maternity tops, quite short. I am having problems with my not v big 25 weeks bump ending up exposed between trousers and tops Confused. Maybe they've got longer over the years, as most of mine are now on their 3rd or 4th outing?

I do struggle to find trousers the right length, as I'm a size 14/16, but they seems to be designed for giraffes. My old trousers are Dorothy Perkins petite maternity, but they don't seem to have such a good range now, and I needed new ones as old ones wearing out. I've given up and bought a couple of long pairs to turn up myself Sad.

kittyandthefontanelles · 17/04/2012 13:12

I'm 5'6" and found most asos maternity clothes too short on me so might be perfect on you.

Aworryingtrend · 17/04/2012 13:26

CeeVeeBee That is so kind of you, I will PM you now.

Kitty you are right about Asos, I forgot I have a maternity dress from there and it is a lovely length on me. I should try their tops as well.

I am 5ftish and found trousers a nightmare, next do a petite maternity range. I will never forget I went into top shop who used to do a maternity range and asked if they had any 12-14 in petite maternity trousers and the girl said to me, no if you are that big, we would expect you to be taller. I was 6 months pregnant and cried all the way home!

Aworryingtrend · 17/04/2012 13:41

Moshling Shock I am not surprised! What a ridiculous thing for her to say, there are plenty of women in this country who are 5 foot tall and a darn sight bigger than a size 12 or 14! How rude of her!
