To not understand why council tax in London is so cheap

This is based on a ridiculously small sample size. My 4 bed house up north costs me £180 a month. Friends 3 bed in London is £90.

Why is it so much cheaper? A few other London base mates reported low council tax rates too (but not that low).

Is London cheaper? Why council tax when everything else is so expensive?

Based mates (must check posts)

depends on the council - mine is about £120 per month for a 2 bed semi

squeakytoy · 09/04/2012 21:53

Odd, because I live in London, and ours is twice that amount, and we dont live in a big house.

chantico · 09/04/2012 21:54

Depends which bit of London. Kensington and Chelsea and Wandsworth have some of the lowest tax in the country. Other bits are more expensive. Services much the same wherever.

FredFredGeorge · 09/04/2012 21:55

Because of the relative value of those two houses to the other houses in the area, and the very high population density in london. Means your house is one of the more expensive in the council, and there are fewer houses and fewer expensive houses (high bands) whereas many parts of London will have a higher proportion of houses in high bands - paying more, and the 3bed house is in one of the lower bands.

Mine's about £120 per month for a 3 bed semi (London)

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 09/04/2012 21:59

It is Wandsworth (that would explain it).

I live 'up north' and mine is £120 a month, for a three bed, so perhaps you were in the higher band when you lived in your previous house?

VivaLeBeaver · 09/04/2012 22:09

Years ago I read in the paper what Tony Blairs council tax on his 7million£ house was and it was less than what I pay for a 3 bed semi.

NoButYeahBut · 09/04/2012 22:11

Mines £130.00 for what was a 2 bed terrace in London before we extended.

Kbear · 09/04/2012 22:11

I'm in SE London borough, three bed semi - £180 per month
Friend lives in next road - similar sized three bed semi house - £120 per month

who the hell knows how they worked it out

QuintessentialShadows · 09/04/2012 22:12

£368 per month. Angry

squeakytoy · 09/04/2012 22:12

Kbear, same here. We are Sutton Council.

Kbear · 09/04/2012 22:13

I'm Bexley Council

squeakytoy · 09/04/2012 22:14

Blimey Quint, where do you live?

QuintessentialShadows · 09/04/2012 22:14

Richmond. Hereafter I shall call it Poormond.

PeelingBells · 09/04/2012 22:16

Wandsworth's cheap cos they screw over carers, older people and people with disabilities. They concentrate on all the cosmetic efficient things that get them tory votes.

stressheaderic · 09/04/2012 22:17

I live up north - 3 bed semi in Band A, £91 a month.

Poormond indeed Quint.

DialsMavis · 09/04/2012 22:17

Ealing rates are the same as Poole and cheaper than Bournemouth Confused

mamij · 09/04/2012 22:17

We are Poormond too. £190 for a two bed terrace Sad

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 09/04/2012 22:17

Feeling quite faint after hearing Quints bill.

That sounds high, even for Richmond. I thought the highest band was about £2600 there..

feedthegoat · 09/04/2012 22:18

I'm in a 3 bed semi up North paying £80 a month. Surely there is more to house comparison than bedrooms though. Even in my area the price of a 3 bed could vary by more than £200 k if you are comparing some fabulous house such as a barn conversion to a 3 bed terrace worth £40 k.

Three bed semi. On Nice Road. Opposite toffee nosed bbc peeps.
