To believe that Brits stand out a mile when abroad?

And I don't know why!

When we were in Florida we were walking through a mall and people definitely look twice at us. Little kids especially stared at our kids like they KNEW they were different.

So what is it about Brits that make us stand out so much?

People think my DH is Dutch even thought he looks like a Geordie football hooligan to me loo

Everyone always thinks I am American.

They then completely change when they find out I am Australian, people seem to like Australians more.

I can't think why, I think we are a bunch of annoying snots, but there you go.

The Brits I have been able to pick have always been sunburned, there is something just so British about taking off as many clothes as possible as soon as there is a hint of sunshine, is endearing.

I tend to blend in whereever I go. I am Australian of Irish, Scots, Spanish extraction. I have dark brown hair, dark brown eyes, jet black somewhat thick eyebrows ( I pluck them) and fair olive skin. If I wear salwar kameez in India ( where DH is from), noone gives me a second glance. Sometimes I overdo the tourist l

I tend to blend in whereever I go. I am Australian. I have dark brown hair, dark brown eyes, jet black somewhat thick eyebrows ( I pluck them) and fair olive skin. If I wear salwar kameez in India ( where DH is from), noone blinks an eye. Sometimes I overdo the tourist look just so little children crowd around me too Blush. I did stand out in China though but even then, I have a suspicion that they don't think you are a 'real' Westerner unless you are a Nordic looking type.

It's all about the shoes IMO. American women don't seem to realise that you don't have to wear white socks with every shoe type

Logo T-shirts or checked shirts tucked into strange coloured shorts and sandals or trainers with socks. Kids always have socks on even in 35C Aussie heat. Backpacks or bumbags, no hats, bright red faces.

I'm English by the way but can spot the Brit tourist in Oz a mile off. I love them and always try and get in conversation with them .

When I lived in a tourist hotspot we used to joke that we could tell an American, French person or Japanese from behind. One American lady I knew used to complain people knew she was American before she openned her mouth, and sh'd been living in Uk for over a year.

IAmBooybilee · 28/05/2012 10:53

not sure what the point of the OP is. british people can spot some foreigners in britain. foreigners can spot some british people in foreign countries. and?

quirrelquarrel · 28/05/2012 11:28

Well, maybe they stand out more to you because you're sort of "tuned" into their Britishness IYSWIM, whereas Italians would think that Italians in Germany are very conspicuous, etc etc. We can't necessarily distinguish between a babble of European languages all spoken together so it all just seems like a foreign blur to us, while English spoken/recognise really stands out.
