...if I tell you it is not actually Easter Sunday today but it is actually Palm Sunday?

According to the Orthodox religion, today is Palm Sunday. Easter is probably the biggest celebration in the Orthodox calendar and they follow the ancient timelines, which they would argue is right...

The formula for Easter?"The first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox"?is identical for both Western and Orthodox Easters, but the churches base the dates on different calendars: Western churches use the Gregorian calendar, the standard calendar for much of the world, and Orthodox churches use the older, Julian calendar.

Easter this year is actually next week then!

So today isn't the day that Jesus laid the egg?

Floggingmolly · 08/04/2012 15:59

We got palms last Sunday?

mercibucket · 08/04/2012 16:01

It should follow the jewish calendar surely as jesus was crucified on a jewish holy day (unlike christmas which is just a bit of a made up day in terms of when it occurs)

gothicmama · 08/04/2012 16:01

Yes you will have done if you are following modern calender if following older calender tis a week behind

Itsjustafleshwound · 08/04/2012 16:03

Why WYBU?

The faith I practise is one that makes the message and meaning of Easter more important than arguing about the dates and timings...

gothicmama · 08/04/2012 16:05

Althiugh it has always puzzled me how the difference between full moon and vernal equinox is different -some years I think they must fall on the same Sundays

startail · 08/04/2012 16:14

Something to do with western Christians calculating a virtual moon and the others using the real thing.

DH said there were tables in his very old prayer book. He used to read them in dull sermons.

Chilenachica · 08/04/2012 16:21

Yippee! more chocolate[bugrin]

Kladdkaka · 08/04/2012 16:22

Oh god no. I feel so sick already. There is a limit to number of cream eggs a person can eat. Unbelieveable I know, but it's true.

My mum is Orthodox. She is celebrating palm Sunday today. So no YANBU!

ilikecandyandrunning · 08/04/2012 19:26

Hardly any of my English friends even know what palm Sunday is! I was surprised.

lolajane2009 · 08/04/2012 19:37

only if you are orthodox, for me, c of e, it is easter and got son's palm cross last week.

DoomCatsofCognitiveDissonance · 08/04/2012 21:07

Nope, it's Easter Sunday for me today. Smile

DH's Easter is next week but that doesn't mean it's 'actually' Palm Sunday this week for everyone .... not even all Orthodox people keep to the Old Calendar any more!
