To think that 6.50am is too early for bell ringing?

I know, I know, we shouldn't have both a house three doors down from a church, but I was pregnant and we were desperate. This happens every Easter Sunday, and this morning it was over 100 bleeding chimes. They also do it late on Maundy Thursday (c. 9.30pm) when it also wakes my DCs. I've no objection to a bit of bell ringing, and on your average Sunday they keep it to a respectable 9.30am, but I think this is just too early!

YABU

Easter Sunday only happens once a year.

The way things are going we will have no religious symbols allowed at all soon.

EdithWeston · 08/04/2012 09:14

You know YABU.

You also know it's Holy Week. And you knew the church was there when you bout the house.

Next thing: rural incomers complain about noise from cows and chickens, and anything and everything to do with horses or tractors.

GwendolineMaryMagdaleneLacey · 08/04/2012 09:15

They're never ringing church bells on the single most important day in the Christian calendar? Bugger me! [bgrin]

GwendolineMaryMagdaleneLacey · 08/04/2012 09:15

?? [bugrin]

RedHelenB · 08/04/2012 09:21

Ours are ringing now - I love living near the church. Little kids waking me up wanting to know if Easter bunny has been before 6 o'clock is a different matter lol!!!! Seriously, YABU

AKissIsNotAContract · 08/04/2012 09:21

YANBU. Why should churches be allowed to make an early morning racket? The day is important to religious people not everyone else.

usualsuspect · 08/04/2012 09:23

You have to put up with this once a year? Shock

Thankgodforcaffeine · 08/04/2012 09:25

I grew up in France, 200 yards from a church. And it is the done thing for church bells to be rung every 15 min (litterally), 24/7, plus all the "extras" like Xmas, Easter, weddings, etc.

So, I think YABU. Sorry [busmile]

JustHecate · 08/04/2012 09:28

oh, I love the bells.

Ours chime every hour, half hour and do a little ding every quarter hour, (I think. I'm sure I've heard that!) each and every day.

They also do proper bell ringing loads. I particularly love it on a summer sunday morning. Sitting in the garden with a cup of coffee, drinking in the morning air and listening to the bells. It's lovely.

Mind you, I don't hear them unless I'm listening for them, these days. I'm so used to them, that I don't normally notice them. Perhaps you'll get to that point?

They're going full whack atm. I've just tuned in to them. Lovely.

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 08/04/2012 09:28

Our church bell sounds every 15 minutes and then chimes the hour. I love it and miss it when I'm away. I called a friend from Spain last year and heard it sounding in the background - came over all 'motional (cheap vino)

OeufRouge · 08/04/2012 09:29

Could be worse. We stayed next door to a mosque on honeymoon and they used a WW2 air raid siren to call people in for morning prayers. That was a scary way to be woken up.

QuickLookBusy · 08/04/2012 09:31

Once a year[bshock]

I'd be writing a letter to the local paper at once.

Bastards.

AmberNectarine · 08/04/2012 09:31

Ah, I see IABU. Fair enough! I'll probably be more chilled about it when the baby stops waking up every 2 hours!

And a WW2 siren? Things could definitely be worse!

I'll scoff some eggs, the caffiene should help...

We used to live near a small village church before I flew the nest. Well not too close but it was directly over the back field. Loved hearing the bells even with stinking hangovers.

AmberNectarine · 08/04/2012 09:33

Oh yeah, I hasten to add, I love proper peeling bells, this is just dong-dong-dong, which I find more intrusive.

My grandmother lived right next to a church. God I loved the bell ringing. I miss it now. I think she occasionally got a little irked by the Wednesday night practising if they were being a bit clunky or if it went on longer than about 2 hrs. But otherwise, the ringing was a bit like punctuation - you tuned in subconsciously.

Makes me choke up remembering.

ABigGirlDoneItAndRanAway · 08/04/2012 09:34

It is a bit early but it's only once a year and it's the most important day in the church's calendar. In a local town to mine they had to stop the bells of the church chiming the hour because of a complaint from just one resident that they were disturbing her at night. After a shitstorm of complaints from everyone else they reinstated them but as a recording rather than actual bells so that the volume could be toned down a bit. I believe the person who complained is not too popular in that town now.

Tiago · 08/04/2012 10:45

I miss the bells. I really do. Sigh.

heliumballoons · 08/04/2012 10:50

We have a church about 800m from us. I was woken suddenly at 6.45am today convinced I'd heard bells. Having been grumpy about waking up early and thinking I'd lost it a bit I'm glad to hear it probably was bells. Grin

And YABU, it's once a year, you know it's going to happen. See why it's annoying though!

Ephiny · 08/04/2012 10:50

It is a bit early, but if it's only once (or twice) a year it's really not worth getting upset about IMO.
