To think that 6.50am is too early for bell ringing?

I know, I know, we shouldn't have both a house three doors down from a church, but I was pregnant and we were desperate. This happens every Easter Sunday, and this morning it was over 100 bleeding chimes. They also do it late on Maundy Thursday (c. 9.30pm) when it also wakes my DCs. I've no objection to a bit of bell ringing, and on your average Sunday they keep it to a respectable 9.30am, but I think this is just too early!

AIBU?

YABU it is EASTER! THe biggest Christian celebration of the year.

ariadne1 · 08/04/2012 10:59

since when has seven o clock, or even ten to, been early?

Tiago · 08/04/2012 11:04

No one gets up these days ariadne. Not anymore. Even my local market only sets up at 9am now (recalls when it was about 06:30 that they set up and 7am when selling began).

TrinityRhino · 08/04/2012 11:05

I grew up next door to a church. I fondly remember the bell ringing every Sunday morning Smile

You are joking aren't you? Church bells on the most important day of the Christian calendar, whatever next! [busmile]

Sweepitundertherug · 08/04/2012 11:32

Ha ha. Easter is once a year.
It's the most important festival for Christians.
Chill. and eat some chocolate

marriedinwhite · 08/04/2012 12:25

But He is risen and the bells must ring. Come and join us next year OP Smile

Tiddlyompompom · 08/04/2012 12:51

YABU but you still have my sympathy! The church opposite my sisters house has bell ringing practise every week, from 7-9pm, I couldn't get my DS to sleep til 10 he was so wound up! Her kids got used to it after a few months, but I'll just make sure I go stay after bell practise next time! It'd be less annoying if they were in tune, but hey, I guess that's why they have to practise... Grin

Dumpyandabdabs · 08/04/2012 12:55

Personally I think 6.50am is too early for any thing other than sleeping but then I'm just not a morning person!!

Auntiestablishment · 08/04/2012 13:00

I don't think you are being unreasonable at all if the bells are as LOUD as thee ones here.

I live VERY close to a church and the bells are LOUD in my house. 6:50am would be a bit much. Here they started about 10am which is perfectly reasonable. Sundays aren't a problem as it's only half an hour or so but the 2-hr practice on a Monday evening is rather trying. Not that I would ever complain as I did, after all, buy a house by a church.

The only night-time ringing they do here is to peal in the New Year - which is nice but was a bit of a shock the first year I was here. The clock strikes every hour in the night, but that's totally fine - not the same thing at all.

Flossiechops · 08/04/2012 13:05

Yabu! We live opposite a church and I love looking out onto the Spire. Funnily enough ours have not rang the bells this morning but they do ring them every new years eve at midnight. They have bell ringing practice every Wednesday from 8pm-9pm just when the kiddies have gone to bed. Maybe I could get an asbo against them [bugrin]

tethersend · 08/04/2012 13:09

The praising bastards.

Birdsgottafly · 08/04/2012 13:23

I think that it should be written into the deeds of a house, that if any cultural pastime is objected to, don't buy the house.

Where i live, you have the choice of: barking dogs, early moring drug raids, lads on scooters, fights still carrying on from the night's before piss up, police helicopter, mother's screaming at their children because they are still hung over/on a come down etc and Early Church bells.

I would have the Church bells any day. I am quite pleased that i am working tomorrow, tbh.

exoticfruits · 08/04/2012 13:35

The church was there long before your house I would expect. If you are going to live near a church find out about what to expect first-don't expect them to change for you.

bemybebe · 08/04/2012 13:50

If it is SUCH A BIG ISSUE for you maybe you should move or AIBU??
[bugrin]
Happy Easter!

Auntiestablishment · 08/04/2012 14:22

Or maybe the church should love its neighbour and have a bit of consideration. Nothing like a bit of hypocrisy of an Easter morning.

bemybebe · 08/04/2012 14:29

They are very considerate - they are not doing it only once a year auntie

bemybebe · 08/04/2012 14:29

not [buwink]

CecilyP · 08/04/2012 14:31

Seems a bit early, but once a year? I would complain to the council if they start to make a habit of it.

CruciFlisspaps · 08/04/2012 14:34

If you don't want to be woken by church bells, then don't buy a house near a church.

Easy.

TheGreatestmadhairDayinHistory · 08/04/2012 14:38

YABVU, but you know that now [busmile]

Tis the best day of the year. Celebrate! [bugrin]

Ploom · 08/04/2012 14:42

We live in very Catholic Bavaria. The church bells ring every 15 mins from 6am (they go for 5 mins then) until 10pm. I very rarely notice them now and the dc sleep thro them.
But they dont chime on Good Friday & Easter Saturday. But in case you dont have a watch, dc walk round the village every hour from 6am - 10pm with clackers shouting "Jetzt ist .... Uhr" (now its whatever time).
So YABU. Get used to it!

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 08/04/2012 14:44

Just as a matter of interest, where in the Bible are bells mentioned?

TheGreatestmadhairDayinHistory · 08/04/2012 14:48

OldLady, it's right back early in the OT when setting up the priestly duties iirc - it mentions bells being rung before and after worship.
