to expect you to take your shoes off in my home?

That sounds so much more confrontational when I use direct address! [bublush]

I'm not criticizing those who don't remove shoes in their own home, but do the British automatically do it at other people's houses?

Asking this question is a life-long supporter of slippers, by the way. [bugrin]

Or my holey , odd socks.

Kladdkaka · 09/04/2012 13:46

I live in a country where it's shoes off. Nobody makes me remove my shoes.

  1. Because they know it's not the norm in my culture.
  2. Because they know it's sometimes difficult and embarassing for me to do so.
  3. Because they value my company more than shoes being on or off.
  4. It would be an entirely pointless exercise in keeping outside dirt out considering I also use a walking frame with wheels which have been everywhere my shoes have, and asking me to leave that at the door because of their carpets would be pig ignorant.

Abso fucking lutle... Had guests this weekend and they all got em off.

Only moi is allowed to run back in with shoes on when I've forgot my iPad or summit.

God you lot are baad hosts.

In my circle, everyone has a wicker basket at the front door, filled with packs of those slippers you get in hotels and health spas.

So you take your shoes off and put on the nice slippers. I thought everyone did this. I have never been anywhere where they didn't.

Shocked really................

igggi · 09/04/2012 14:06

If this is so common, why do I not see people on tv routinely removing shoes? They take coats off on tv, if removing shoes really was the norm they could do that too.

igggi · 09/04/2012 14:07

Catgirl - hotels and health spas? We live on different planets!

blapbird · 09/04/2012 14:09

Catgirl Wink

catgirl1976 · 09/04/2012 14:10

Well I suppose you could use Uggs or something if you don't do spas?

ifancyashandy · 09/04/2012 14:18

I consider my outfit every day Bunbaker, you know, in a 'do these shoes work with these trousers' sort of way. Nowt out of the ordinary there. But I do have over 200 pairs of shoes, so I do have a few to choose from.

ifancyashandy · 09/04/2012 14:20

'And other peoples manky slippers?

No ta.

lunamoon · 09/04/2012 14:21

Ifancy-200 pairs of shoes-are you called Imelda?......

catgirl1976 · 09/04/2012 14:23

They aren't manky - they are brand new and wrapped. They get binned after every visit. Don't you have these?

catgirl1976 · 09/04/2012 14:24

If you buy a box of 1,000, they cost 48p each and last for ages

catgirl1976 · 09/04/2012 14:25

Small price to pay to avoid the conflicts that can so often occur from this most sensitive of issues

ifancyashandy · 09/04/2012 14:26

Nope, not a part of my shoe collection. And never been in a house that has this. Anywhere in the world.

ifancyashandy · 09/04/2012 14:27

Wouldn't avoid the conflict - they wouldn't go with my outfit. I like fashion. So sue me!

catgirl1976 · 09/04/2012 14:27

Really? That's so interesting. I have never been anywhere that didn't have these.

TallyMeBanana · 09/04/2012 14:30

Im fed up of disrespectful people wearing their dirty shoes on my cream carpets.

I always ask people to take them off!

HSMM · 09/04/2012 14:30

If the members of the household are not wearing shoes, then I would normally take mine off. Having said that, I went to a friend's house at the weekend who has 3 dogs and I did not remove my shoes as I didn't want dog hairs all over my socks (she was wearing slippers and her DH took his shoes off as soon as he came in, so I did feel a bit rude).

ifancyashandy · 09/04/2012 14:31

Really? Are you in the UK? You'd expect to see these if you randomly popped round your neighbours, had to go to a colleagues house, pick something up from an ebayer? How, um, unexpected.

ifancyashandy · 09/04/2012 14:32

Hmm Catgut norty indeed.
