To think you should only use 1 name on mumsnet?

Apparently we are not really allowed alters.
This name is an alter.
I normally use another name. That was a name change as well and I made that clear in the profile for that name.
I accidentally breached some t&cs on here.
I am allowed back, but only with this name.

So can you all tell me how many alters you all have and why you're all allowed to use them?!

What does sock puppet mean?

I guess it has nothing to do with putting a sock on your hand to amuse crying children Confused

mistlethrush · 04/04/2012 15:41

Sweepit had namechanged and started a thread - getting lots of adviced etc. Clearly decided that she wanted people to think that this wasn't the same person as her previous name - so posted under previous name on her namechanged thread....

whatsallthefuss · 04/04/2012 15:41

so you've not been banned just told not to use them names cos you broke the rules? Seems fair enough.
I have lots of variations of this name but it's obvious who I am to people that know my original posting name. I just don't want my posts to be easily searched in case work or someone I don't want to know about my plentiful time on MN recognise me and search my posts.

Blu · 04/04/2012 15:47

It would work like this:
Poster (lets call her SuckPoppet) changes name to discuss something personal
Poster then worries that despite name change people might be thinking 'aha I think this is SuckPoppet'
So poster comes on the thread as SuckPoppet in order to 'advise' herself, possibly critically, thinking that people will not suspect that she IS the OP because she is advising as herself on the thread .

(SuckPoppet name copyrights owned by Blu)

mistlethrush · 04/04/2012 15:48

Now that is a good name Blu! Grin

Kayzr · 04/04/2012 15:48

Thanks for that. I was feeling a bit confused.

I can see how, if you knew RL people were watching your usual name, you'd post on a thread to throw them off.

So that's what you did, MNHQ banned you, you explained, they understood the context and let you back?
So, in the nicest way possible, what's the problem then? Are you cross about their decision?

FWIW I've posted on the same thread with two names but not to mislead. If a thread was talking about, just say, Sam Brick's stunning beauty, I could (if I can be arsed) NC to SamBrick'sArtisanHusband and post as a joke. Having previously been Sue upthread.
I think it's only when it's clearly not a joke it's a problem.

PurpleRomanesco · 04/04/2012 15:51

Ahhh, I get it now.

No harm done OP. :)

Sposh · 04/04/2012 15:53

How do I know?

I have been following her other thread about how she's making plans to leave him. I have also 'known' her on another board for several years and have absolutely no reason not to believe her.

ObiWan · 04/04/2012 15:53

Yes, I sort of see now.

It never occured to me that my husband or anyone else in RL would know my username, or even that I use MN, I suppose.

Although drawing attention to your one and only name like this would seem an odd thing to do in those circumstances.

YABU

Because NCing can be great fun. I have mine for Easter but changed recently because I didn't like my first one. And sometimes people do it if they make a tit of themselves and want to start over.

Can't think of an Easter name.

Blu · 04/04/2012 16:14

Unfortunately the manouvre I suggest below is presumably also classic trolling modus operandi.

Sweepitundertherug · 04/04/2012 16:15

Anyway, now I know the rules I know aibu. A little bit anyway. Envy
