To think you should only use 1 name on mumsnet?

Sweepitundertherug · 04/04/2012 15:17

Apparently we are not really allowed alters.
This name is an alter.
I normally use another name. That was a name change as well and I made that clear in the profile for that name.
I accidentally breached some t&cs on here.
I am allowed back, but only with this name.

So can you all tell me how many alters you all have and why you're all allowed to use them?!

HateBeingCantDoUpMyJeans · 04/04/2012 15:27

How can you accidentally sick puppet?

valiumredhead · 04/04/2012 15:28

Why would you do that? Unless it's for obvious sock puppet reasons; I don't see how it can be innocent?

People do it all the time on other forums, just so if anyone was snooping they'd be thrown off the scent. Here it's bad form but obviously the OP didn't know.

GoGoBananas · 04/04/2012 15:28

I've checked btw. I've namechanged 108 times...

TheSockPuppet · 04/04/2012 15:28

I still don't understand sorry, how could you accidently give yourself advice, surely you'd recognise your own name or your original post?

Sweepitundertherug · 04/04/2012 15:29

I didn't accidentally sock puppet!
I didn't know what I did was wrong.
It was a very simple thing.

I have learnt my lesson though!

wearytraveller · 04/04/2012 15:29

Oh right, I think I geddit now.

TheSockPuppet · 04/04/2012 15:30

108 times Bananas Shock? I'm actually quite impressed by that, I think I've namechanged about 5 times in a year.

Sweepitundertherug · 04/04/2012 15:31

I know now it was wrong. I am just shocked at the way it was handled by HQ.

Warning would have been nice.

Hands out medal!

GreenEyesAndHam · 04/04/2012 15:33

You can name change as often as you like (without sock puppeting obv), but you can only have one MN account

I think

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 04/04/2012 15:34

I still don't get itConfused

Why the hell would you name change to offer yourself advice!?! I'm trying to think of situation when that might happen and I can't.....sorry! I mean if you want the advice of others why name change and tell yourself what to do.....

I'm a serial name keeper, I only ever thought of one half decent name, inspiration has failed me ever sinceGrin

ObiWan · 04/04/2012 15:35

I've been around long enough to know what a sock-puppet is, but I hadn't realised that it could be an innocent thing.

How does that work? Who are you throwing off the scent of what? If you see what I mean Confused.

I mean, how could someone be 'snooping' and how would posting to yourself 'cover your tracks'?

ObiWan · 04/04/2012 15:36

x-post Doyou

LeBOF · 04/04/2012 15:36

I think a warning would be a good idea, if it's an innocent mistake. I'm sure I've done it before as a newish poster- not to throw people off my scent, but to bump my own thread without looking desperate. I wouldn't bother now: if a thread's dead, zed's dead, baby, and all that. I'd just try to be more interesting, or lost my shame and beg for more replies.

IamtheZombie · 04/04/2012 15:37

Zombie is sorry, but she has little sympathy.

You say this isn't your usual NN, yet you have posted quite a lot using it for several months. She presumes that what you call your usual name (and which in itself was a name change) predates this NN.

Sock puppetting / trollery / etc. are frequently discussed at length on here and MNHQ's stance on these has been reiterated time after time after time.

Zombie wonders how all these discussions could have passed you by thus resulting in "accidental" sock puppetting.

Tee2012 · 04/04/2012 15:37

I don't get it either. And I have never belong to a forum where it was considered good form to do it.

StickAForkInMeImDone · 04/04/2012 15:37

If it is the thread I am thinking of then I don't understand why you needed to offer advice to yourself. You were getting plenty of helpful advice anyway.
Not sure that you didn't realise it was against the rules Hmm
Glad you got it sorted anyway, MNHQ must have realised there was no malicious intent. Smile

Sposh · 04/04/2012 15:38

Doyou I suspect she used her usual name to advise herself because her dh knows her usual MN but not this one? To put him off the scent.

RebeccaMumsnet · 04/04/2012 15:38

Hi Sweepitundertherug

You are welcome to name change to any new name that isn't taken or any that you have previously used that are 'assigned' to you in our system.

What we don't allow is someone posting on a single thread using two different names and not letting on that they are doing so.

This is classed as posting to mislead which is a ban-able offence

hth Smile

valiumredhead · 04/04/2012 15:38

doyouthink read my earlier post :)

wearytraveller · 04/04/2012 15:38

Nope, on reflection, I'm still baffled. But intrigued.

Stratters · 04/04/2012 15:39

I had the same, in my case it was because I had a gmail account and logged in to n/c but used gmail.com instead of googlemail - I was on DD2's desktop so didn't realise. Think that loophole's been sorted now though.

Sposh · 04/04/2012 15:39

OP is in an abusive relationship. Her dh is highly likely to check what she's posting about on MN. What's so complicated about that?

ShirelyKnottage · 04/04/2012 15:40

This is a bit daft really OP, bearing in mind the sensitive nature of your thread.
