To be angry at this woman?

Hi,
Was swimming today with the little one and in my leisre centre you have to leave yor buggues upstairs. When I came back a woman just sat her baby into my pushchair, changed the harnesses etc. and tried out my buggy. I was so angry and told her off. I wasn't shouting or anything. The woman on the reception told me not be angry about it and there was nothing wrong with trying somebody's pushchair. Sorry but IMO there is. AIBU?

what did the potential thief woman say?? Had she loaded up her bags on it etc?

ABatInBunkFive · 03/04/2012 16:07

yy - laps round reception = odd.

ExitPursuedByABear · 03/04/2012 16:08

The owner of the house (which we did eventually purchase) phoned when we got home to say that her DD had just told her what she had done. I hadn't noticed until getting DD out of her car seat at home, and wondering why her clothes were wet. Had to wash the cover and disinfect the seat.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 03/04/2012 16:08

She was trying to nick it, if she wanted to try him in a buggy she'd have gone to a shop to do so.

Pram theft is quite common, our local surestart even has pram locks ffs, can't ave nuffin these days.

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 03/04/2012 16:09

I'm wondering if the receptionist is in on a buggy nicking scam or something, as she seemed to think it was ok when 99.9% of people on here think it's odd/wrong. It seems strange that two people that thought it was acceptable were in the same place at the same time...

diddl · 03/04/2012 16:09

YANBU-can you lock it to anything or put a lock though a wheel?

ObiWan · 03/04/2012 16:10

I think stealing of pushchairs must be more common than you'd think. Our old medical centre used to give out bike locks to use on the buggies, you'd just hand the lock back in at reception when you left.

We were in a pretty low crime area, so buggy envy must have been strong indeed Grin

doctordwt · 03/04/2012 16:10

I'd go back to the receptionist, give a big smile and say that you'd like her name please, as you're gonig to be reporting an attempted theft and you will be naming her as someone possibly involved in it.

That'll have her crapping her pants!

babybythesea · 03/04/2012 16:10

Very strange thing to do.

If all the buggies are left together then there's no way to be sure that someone really does own one other than going by the way they behave (do they look confident going up to it and using it, or do they look 'shifty'?) It's not like a car that you can lock so someone breaking into it is blindingly obvious.
So if she had walked up to it and started to quite openly and confidently pack her child into it I'd be querying her motive and it's not on for the receptionist to ok that.
And that aside, if you've got the buggy set up for your child you don't want it messing with - if you had to rush off, for example to catch a bus home, and stuffed your child in expecting it all to fit, and then had to spend a few minutes fiddling with straps to sort it out, you'd be annoyed.
YANU and she was being weird at best and contemplating theft at worst.

AgentZigzag · 03/04/2012 16:11

Maybe the receptionist thought that if the OP kicked up a stink about it she'd be in trouble.

But then she can hardly keep track of whose pushchair belongs to who can she?

AutumnSummers · 03/04/2012 16:11

I'd complain tothe leisure centre manager about the receeptionist's attitude. Nothing wrong with trying out a psuch chair? She could have been trying to steal it!

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 03/04/2012 16:13

Given that it's a new buggy, I bet the receptionist either gets a cut, or phones this woman to let her know when a decent one is left. She knows roughly how long the owner will be away as she's just taken their money, and all she has to do is plead ignorance and say she didn't know it was someone else's.
Pushchair and pram thefts are very common here unfortunately, you cannot leave one unattended and unsecured anywhere, even right outside your own front door, or you run a very real risk that it will be gone when you come back for it.

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 03/04/2012 16:15

And even if she wasn't trying to steal it, who wants someone else's child sat in their child's buggy? The child might have been sick in it, done a messy poo or smeared food or drink all over it. I wouldn't want randoms sitting in my buggy!

BornToShopForcedToWork · 03/04/2012 16:15

The woman told me to "chillax" and was quite rude actually.

I had a double buggy knicked from outside my door when my ones were of an age tto be in one.

Those were the days.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 03/04/2012 16:18

Get yourself a bike lock for your pram

WhataMistakeaToMakea · 03/04/2012 16:19

''Chillax''?? Urgh! Would have definately made a complaint!

CakeMixture · 03/04/2012 16:20

sounds like an attempt at stealing to me.

BananasInBloomers · 03/04/2012 16:20

The cheeky bitch was trying to steal it. To those who think she shouldnt have got angry how would you feel if someone took your phone, tried out a few calls and texts on it without you knowing?
I'd say the receptionist was trying to smooth over the situation but I would be taking her name.

If someone stole my buggy I'd be seriously pissed off as its my only mode of transport for the babies.

FriggFRIGG · 03/04/2012 16:21
Shock

I would be horrified

but I'm a weirdy pushchair addict

BornToShopForcedToWork · 03/04/2012 16:22

You cant lock it up unless you leave it outside. And to be honest, you can remove the wheels easily etc. its a bugaboo chameleon, so you get the bits for it quite easily for a few quid on ebay internet.

Chillax Angry

nickelhasababy · 03/04/2012 16:22

if i were going to steal a buggy, i would probably also take my time about it - more likely to look "not guilty".
