I'm sat watching Aladdin , the end always gets me sad git emoticon
and I saw Dumbo the other and got a 'they don't make them like they used to'

moment, apart from Up thats magical.

AIBU to think some of the new ones lack the warmth and spirit of the old ones??

Well, is it because you are viewing them as a grown up now? So you are more experienced in the ways of the world and not full of childhood innocence?

PS: I used to love watching Aladdin because Aladdin looked just like a boy I fancied! Grin

Ah Dumbo with it's good, old-fashioned family racism. Good times.

But on the whole, I do love a good Disney film.

Hoebag · 02/04/2012 16:31

There are worse ones.

king louie is a pisstake of louie armstrong 'king of the swingers' and the vultures are the beetles not even attempting to be subtle.

I think when the films were hand drawn in that style, it invited you to search for the detail and it sort of had a soft, cosy feel to it.

Now the style is more modern with sharper lines and the characters are witty rather than sweet.

I was watching Dumbo and thought that it was racist myself.
Enchanted is excellent and very much old school disney.
Beauty and the beast is brill too.
Disney did have a 70/80's dodgy patch though.

happywheezer · 02/04/2012 16:34

Sorry Tangled

BelleDameSansMerci · 02/04/2012 16:37

I prefer the new ones, to be honest. I loathe the "needing to be rescued" element of the older films even if they are closer to the original fairy tales.

I don't like the cultural stereotyping in Dumbo (the crows) or in Lady and the Tramp.

I love Tangled and I like The Princess and the Frog too (although it seems to be universally disliked). I like the stronger heroines - not that I could fault Mulan, to be fair.

5inthebed · 02/04/2012 16:37

Have you watched Tangled? That is a great Disney film, one of my favourites.

DH bought me Lion King for my birthday last year, I am such a child.

WibblyBibble · 02/04/2012 16:40

Also less racist.

I think that's an acceptable tradeoff. Grin

mummytime · 02/04/2012 16:43

I like both Tangled and The Princess and the Frog. Don't like Aladdin so much, do like older ones, maybe it's to do with the time they came out?

ThisIsANickname · 02/04/2012 16:44

I loved the Princess and the Frog and Tangled.

But I also love Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast, as well as Lion King.

I loathe Finding Nemo.

OriginalJamie · 02/04/2012 16:45

I loved Tangled as well. Witty but not so knowing and grown up as things like Shrek.

ThisIsANickname · 02/04/2012 17:38

The problem I had with Tangled was that the girl looked super young (like 12 or 13) and the man looked about 25. I get that she was turning 18 but she really didn't look like it.

Hoebag · 02/04/2012 17:54

I like Tangled and enchanted but it still doesnt have 'the vintage feel'

The little mermaid came out the year I was born so its sort of 'my film' aha
I think
Aladdin,
Beauty and the Beast,
Lion king
Hunchback
Mulan were like the golden years

Zuckiecat - how can you hate Toy Story?

Hoebag · 02/04/2012 21:20

I think the black cauldron is an oddball of a disney film

Starwisher · 02/04/2012 21:26

Not Disney films really as princess and frog is brilliant and enjoyed tangled.

However I don't like all the new 3d Winnie the pooh, Garfield and strawberry shortcake cartoons on tv.

The warmth is definitely missing from those.

I like the older ones

Aristocats, Robin Hood and the Jungle Book, Bambi are great

Although I do like The Lion King

StrawberrytallCAKE · 02/04/2012 21:39

Princess and the frog is disliked? I think its one of the best so does dd. My absolute favourite is tangled though and I never thought anything would top beauty and the beast!

EggInABap · 02/04/2012 22:21

I do love the ones I grew up with- snow white, Cinderella etc but I find the storylines of the modern films much more heartwarming. I bawl my eyes out at the end of Toy Story 3 every single time. Also love Monsters Inc, Nemo and Up.

Hanleyhigh · 02/04/2012 22:22

Princess and the Frog is my favourite.

Enchanted and Tangled close second.

TheSinglePringle · 02/04/2012 22:27

I love Disney films. My favourites were bambi, lion king, beauty and the beast and Mulan.

The newer films I don't mind.
