is scrawled on the floor of our spare bedroom. In big letters.

We're having a lot of building work done following a big insurance claim and have moved out. It's all been handled by our insurer - we haven't appointed the builders - and we know who the main contractor is but not their subcons. My friend thinks I should contact the police about it as it's racism. We are a mixed race family incidentally but none of us know a Nigel!

AIBU to speak to the police and have it recorded in some way, or just ignore and move on? We can't prove who did it - but we certainly didn't!

You did absolutely the right thing, by the way, CheapLamp. I'm white and I'm sickened to know that people like this exist, and are employed by listed companies.

I would be very, very tempted to name and shame the insurance company on this thread, and the contractor. You've shown exceptional discretion and fairness of mind in not doing so.

Post on Legal.

There are some very good people on there.

You might have to get a solicitor to deal with it and I'm sure someone in Legal could point in the right direction if you do. Otherwise try the Law Society and explain and they'll give you a list of specialists in your area.

It's hell. I've had something similar. It got sorted and the legal side wasn't that expensive - definitely worth the outlay.

Sad read through this thread and am also disgusted. And I'd feel violated enough as a white person. So sorry it's come to this though and your work's being delayed.

Sorry to hear that the work has stopped however are the insurance company not paying for your temporary accommodation?

Cheaplamp · 05/04/2012 13:54

Yes of course, they are covering all our expenses associated with the claim. We're renting a smaller and slightly shabby house around the corner, which we picked because it was so close and because initially we thought we'd be home in about 12 weeks. We will shortly reach the policy limit for accommodation but the insurer has indicated that they will "take a view" on this. I should bloody well think so.
Anyway, why do you ask?
