To put a dog lead on the baby?

A friend of mine took her (then) toddler to a festival, he was just walking so had reins on him, and attached to that, a retractable dog lead. It meant he had a little freedom but stayed safe and she could sit with her friends.

We've booked a short camping trip, the baby will most likely be walking by then and Im not sure if all babies do this but our first, once he started walking would literally aim for the horizon and just go. Over and over again. No amount of distraction would prevent it. It lasted 5 or so months and he was a bit easier. Im assuming DS2 will be the same, and we'd love to sit on the beach have picnics etc.

Anyway when my friend told me what she did, I thought it was a genuis idea. But apparently, she said people hurled abuse at her for it so clearly not everyone agrees that its a good idea.

IS it unreasonable? Totally prepared to be flamed. But I figured Id ask her first then have abuse hurled at me on the beach. Wink

thats even worse!!! on a beach???? GET OFF YOUR ARSE AND GO WITH THEM!!

again what age are we talking here?

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 01/04/2012 22:47

On the beach and on the campsite on holiday - not just a footpath between the car and the newsagents FFS

Snakeonaplane · 01/04/2012 22:47

And yes I was assuming their was more than one adult but if not that's just tough, it's all the responsible adults job.

WhiteTrash · 01/04/2012 22:47

Just walk along beside them? I refuse to believe the person who said that has had A Bolter. More like running after them every 2 minutes so they dont get in front of that car/in the river/in the sea/ totally lost.

It is NOT lazy. It is no more 'lazy' then using reins. You cant be ok with reins but not be ok with long reins ITS BEEN INVENTED FOR THOSE WHO CANT BE ARSED TO READ THE THREAD.

i said the idea is lazy! very lazy! get a dog if you want to use a lead.

and like i said i used reigns for about a month in a local park but wont never dream of putting a retractable one on it!

Why lotus, you think it's not possible for more than one person to have a different opinion to youShock

scuzy · 01/04/2012 22:49

i am answering your original post!!

i do have a bolter.

he holds my hand in dangerous places like on a road or path. HE DOESNT HAVE A CHOICE!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 01/04/2012 22:51

I think we may be in danger of running out of !!!!!!!s
Please use them wisely.

slowestwildebeast · 01/04/2012 22:51

vile? I'm concerned, not vile. I look after people for a living, if I was vile I'd be sacked.

YABU to use a dog lead that's dangerous. The comment about my parents giving a shit was in regards to the fact that people would still use a dog lead that was said to be dangerous.

ignore if you wish, but why post if you're going to ignore poster who disagree?

scuzy · 01/04/2012 22:51

lol i'm not the only one "shouting".

again how old the child? dunno why i keep asking no one is saying it. can you not run after you child?

Scuzy & snakeonaplane try reading what I wrote not what you imagined. I said 'until you have looked after one' (a bolter) I did not say anything about having had your own children.

Attaching a set of reins to a longer 'rein' is not a bad thing - stop being so bloody melodramatic.

Get over the fact that the rope/lead/extension is a dog lead.

snakeonaplane - really? Not all toddlers are compliant little mice who just like to stand next to mummy passing her pretty ickle shells you know, some of them who have just found their feet want to run and run and run and mooch about in their own space investigating things... is it so hard to accept that not all children are the same??

scuzy the 'age' doesn't matter - this child had just started walking/running, so fairly young.

scuzy · 01/04/2012 22:53

my "!!!!!" are used as I cant understand why someone would use retractable reigns on a child as I cant wrap my head around it.

!!

Snakeonaplane · 01/04/2012 22:53

White I don't get what you mean, 'haven't had a bolter', list of people have bolters and haven't resorted to leads, as I said, me included. I know it's a nightmare and their is lots of chasing and repetition but it's all part of educating and protecting them.

Everyone Ignored my point about them eating shit, you guys alright with that bit so long as the can't run away?

WhiteTrash · 01/04/2012 22:54

Its got nothinv to do with walking along the road holding hands.

It no longer involves a retractable lead (if youd read the thread you'd realise) and reins with a lead attatched HAVE BEEN INVENTED

OP posts:
MrsMuddyPuddles · 01/04/2012 22:55

retractable dog leads go invisible because they're so thin; just get a normal dog lead and use that at the end of the reins if yours turns out to be a bolter.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 01/04/2012 22:55

They add nothing to your argument.

Just sayin

Snakeonaplane · 01/04/2012 22:56

He doesn't have to hold my hand all the time, he went in the pram when not safe ie by the road and then on the beach etc I followed him around. I'd really save your pity he's doing just fine.

WhiteTrash · 01/04/2012 22:56

Eating shit? What are you talking about?

if they just started walking/running they cant be moving that fast.

and if they are that fast surely the rein will eventually run out and they will be yanked back. or do you put on the brake and yank them back.

again, why dont you run after them?

and my ds holds my hand on the street (he just turned 3). you feel sorry for kids that hold onto their mums hands while walking down a street?

on a beach he would be let go to walk and run. its a beach!!

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 01/04/2012 22:57

WhiteTrash - I bet the people calling you lazy wouldn't dream of going to the beach camping with a bolter Grin
