To put a dog lead on the baby?

A friend of mine took her (then) toddler to a festival, he was just walking so had reins on him, and attached to that, a retractable dog lead. It meant he had a little freedom but stayed safe and she could sit with her friends.

We've booked a short camping trip, the baby will most likely be walking by then and Im not sure if all babies do this but our first, once he started walking would literally aim for the horizon and just go. Over and over again. No amount of distraction would prevent it. It lasted 5 or so months and he was a bit easier. Im assuming DS2 will be the same, and we'd love to sit on the beach have picnics etc.

Anyway when my friend told me what she did, I thought it was a genuis idea. But apparently, she said people hurled abuse at her for it so clearly not everyone agrees that its a good idea.

IS it unreasonable? Totally prepared to be flamed. But I figured Id ask her first then have abuse hurled at me on the beach. Wink

She probably kept you in the back garden.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 01/04/2012 22:25

OR maybe neither of you were 'bolters' Hmm

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 01/04/2012 22:29

Talking of big brother - did I tell you about my video monitor?

WhiteTrash · 01/04/2012 22:29

Or most likey, she avoided situations such as camping during the very short time you were bolters.

:) no children = no ideas about dog leash parenting.

glad it makes sense now. Yes I do not have children, but I still have an idea about how to do things. I'm sure when children do arrive I'll think differently.

Birdsgottafly · 01/04/2012 22:31

Perhaps there is a genuine gap in the market that someone could take to dragons den, most baby equipment has been designed that way Hmm.

I see people using similar produts to what has been posted, when camping and they are life savers, at the edge of cliffs.

It is that or tie your toddler papoose like to you.

slowestwildebeast · 01/04/2012 22:32

my mother loved camping. I was a very mobile child, marching about at 9 months! No dog leads, just reins and parents that gave a shit

havent read all the replies but think its a lazy silly dangerous thing to do. i have used reigns on ds at a park when he was much younger but i mean get off your arse and accompany your child!! dont use feckin retractable lead. thats ridiculous!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 01/04/2012 22:39

I have children, 3 a baby, a bolter and a very angelic dd. I have never resorted to retractable dog lead and I have never tethered any of my children . I have never needed a set of reins although I'm not totally adverse to them if that's what helps you get through the day.

The OP clearly stated that she wanted to use this method when on holiday to get a break and give the toddler some space IMO toddlers don't need space.

It is Lazy parenting, if on holidays all the responsible adults take it in turns man marking the toddler everyone gets a break and toddler stays safe, that's your job as a parent.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 01/04/2012 22:41

Ha ha ha at being too fecking lazy to read a few posts and then ranting about people being lazy.

Brilliant.

scuzy · 01/04/2012 22:42

maryz i am straight up answering the OP on her original question. i think its lazy and ridiculous!! walk with the child for fuck sake!

Snakeonaplane · 01/04/2012 22:42

Mary I'm sure scuzy is basing her opinions on the OP, there is nothing in the rest of this thread to make her change her mind about the fact that dog leads for toddlers is lazy and dangerous.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 01/04/2012 22:42

Wilde - you - really aren't listening are you? Some children are bolters they don't just pootle around beside you, the just go >>>>>>>>>>> and >>>>>>> and >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> and >>>>>>>>>>>> and until you have looked after one, you really should just STFU bear in mind that you could be wrong about looking after babies/todlers/children when you haven't actually done it.

scuzy · 01/04/2012 22:44

It's going to be on a beach! RTFT

scuzy · 01/04/2012 22:46

and just because some didnt carry a child through pregnancy does not mean their opinions are not valid!!! "until you have children .. blah blah blah".

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 01/04/2012 22:46

yeah its always that simple.
Because all kids are the same and entirely predictable.
And if they arent its because their parents are shite.

Simple as.

Snakeonaplane · 01/04/2012 22:46

chipping I don't think you need to have children to know that putting them on a dog lead is lazy and wrong Confused.

What does a toddler need space for? They like to chat, pass you things be spoken to they're not moody teenagers FFS.
