DD's been invited to a 'big fat gypsy wedding' party

Tell me what I should think about it please MN.

DD's 11 YO, and has been told to dress over the top.

She told me and I was like 'WTF Heck??'
And she was like 'Yeah!'
And I was like 'No way'
And she was like 'Yes way!'

(I'm up with the kidz yeah, innit Wink)

One half of me thinks well if it's on the telly it must be an OK way of describing the group, but then some travelling people might be offended by it, then I think it's only fancy dress, before wondering what it would sound like applied to another minority group.

Also, she's in a class full of brats 'opinionated brats children' at school who are pretty shitty with her at times, so I don't want to ostracize her even more.

The worst bit is the whole class has been invited but one lad left out Sad DD has said something to the lass having the party, but she didn't think anything of it. I'm more disgusted at her parents letting her not invite one lad, even though he can be a pain. S'not on.

If you don't want her to go then she doesn't go. I would tell her she couldn't for the fact that one lad has been left out.

SunflowersSmile · 30/03/2012 21:23

A party that could most definitely cause offence. I would be uncomfortable with it.

It's offensive... but personally I wouldn't keep her from going if she wanted to.

AwkwardMary · 30/03/2012 21:27

What's the issue here? The fact that the party will be full of 11 year olds in neon green boob tubes or that there's a kid left out?

If I were you I would let her go but make sure she's not dressed like the kids in that show for real....a nod to the neon...a nod to the feathers. No flesh out.

That works for me, AwkwardMary.

Goawaybob · 30/03/2012 21:32

LOL at coconutty - taxi drivers and corner shop owners! ShockGrin. I'm with you though, its offensive and i wouldnt let my DD go.

seeker · 30/03/2012 21:32

I would offer her something else really fantastic to do that day, to be honest- something she can't resist. In would be unhappy both about the theme and about one boy being leftnout.

I totally agree with you Coconutty, i just thought your analogy was funny, made me chuckle Grin My Nan was from gypsy descent and no one in our family dresses like that either, the only consession would have been dodgy gold loop earrings Grin

MerryMarigold · 30/03/2012 21:40

I thought she really had been invited to a gypsy wedding Grin...anyway, finally got the hang of it. I dunno if it is any worse than, say, a Hawaian party or Indian themed party. I know if it were my ds, I'd let him go as a way of 'fitting in' as it is so so so hard to be on the fringes, but that's not necessarily the right or best thing to do.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I don't drive and am skint so can't really offer her anything better. I'm also totally unsociable, so guilt at not having her friends round might play a part in me not saying no straight away.

I know I only get half the story of what goes on at school, but honestly, I'm really loathe to not let her go (even though I'm seething at the way she treated by them). She doesn't like school really because of the shite she gets there, things like 'ewww X touched me ' etc etc etc.

It's hard for her, and for me to take a stand against them.

She knows why I was shocked at the theme and understands.

And about the lad, who I know is a bit of a tike but I quite like him.

Same here Merry!

DinahMoHum · 30/03/2012 22:05

brilliant idea for a party

WaddaYaReckon · 30/03/2012 22:16

Could it really be a celebration of the culture all the way Dinah?

Without a hint of poking fun at them?

unintendedadult · 30/03/2012 23:43

IF, it's themed on the program, would the boys (dressed up as the men of the program) have to have pixelated/blurred faces?? Grin Grin

Birdsgottafly · 31/03/2012 00:52

I could be sarcasic and say that perhaps the idea of not having underage sex and only with your life partner, plus being able to definately name the father of your baby rubs off, then it will be a positive experience.

If we are feeding steroetypes, that is.

Mind you, i am a fan of the dresses. I would wonder at what they are going to do once they are at the party, though.

pigletmania · 31/03/2012 09:03

I am shocked. What ignorant and delightful family they sound, afp for having such a stupid party and for leaving one child out.

DinahMoHum · 31/03/2012 09:50

i dont really care if its a celebration of the culture or a pisstake. Its a popular TV show.
Not a fan of the traveller community and the way they treat their girls and women

AgnesCampbellMacPhail · 31/03/2012 09:56

I think it's horrible and buys into racist and misogynist stereotypes. I would be horrified at such an invite; at the total lack of critical thinking involved.

kumquatsarethelonelyfruit · 31/03/2012 09:56

I think it is racist and I wouldn't want my child to be part of it.

jf268 · 31/03/2012 09:58

just seen this & am cringing at how awful some people are. It's obv fine to celebrate other cultures, but this is just a chance to poke fun & laugh at people. Shame on the parents for being so downright stupid.

AWomanCalledHorse · 31/03/2012 10:01

You say they're normally shitty brats to her; would her invite be part of an elaborate plan to humiliate her?
