I have half a tank of fuel in my (petrol) car. I was not panicing and had no intention of filling up as I don't do much milage in my car. We are going away for a week on Saturday and it's a three hour drive, we were planning to take DH company (diese)l car and were confident he would be able to fill up before we went............cue panic buying everywhere and now everywhere round here has run out of diesel!!!
Local nurses have been unable to get fuel to get to work (rural area) and it is just bonkers!!! There is no stike even arrange yet - if there was we would have a full seven days notice.
Why are people so selfish................????

Thanks blu... We'll just get on the plane and admire the state of the mother country if we have to queue for gas. Grin it might be something of a confirmation of the emigration though!

mummymeister · 29/03/2012 20:35

I have just sat in a queue for 30 mins for the only petrol station in my rural area to fill up my car with diesel (it was on red with 15 miles to go apparently) and the 3 other people/nutters around me all were filling up with less than £10 worth of fuel. unbelievable.

Sparks1 · 29/03/2012 20:38

*I don't think this can be blamed on the public. It was a government minister who told people to fill their cars and get a store in their sheds. WTF?!!

Today I have heard Tory politicians blame this buying on the tanker drivers, unions and, best of all, on the Labour party for not putting pressure on unions re strikes. How long are we going to allow ourselves to be manipulated by these clowns?*

The government minister handled it badly but ultimately the union is to blame. The issues they claim to have could be dealt with much better by not striking.

It's a calculated plan to disrupt and cause everyone to argue amongst themselves. Quite clearly it's working.

lisad123 · 29/03/2012 20:41

I have enough to get me and dh to work and dds to school and back. After that I'm stuck Sad just hoping I can get some over weekend to take girls to their Easter activities

lazylula · 29/03/2012 20:47

Dh is driving 140 miles a day (it maybe more than that) so he needs diesel every couple of days. If he can't get it, he can't work and that means no money as he is self employed. I may well fill my car up if I find a petrol station without a queue that way dh can take my car if he runs out in the van, so will keep him going for a couple more days.

Am I just missing the panic buying in Nottingham? Drove past 3 seperate garages and they were no busier than usual.

landofsoapandglory · 29/03/2012 21:09

Cly did you not see East Midlands Today? There was a report from garages across Nottingham and Leicester with massive queues outside.

I have known this was coming for weeks (DH is military and has been working on the co-ordination of military drivers) so we have kept both cars full of fuel at all times. I have a very important hospital appointment next week, apart from that my car won't be moving off the drive. If the DC want to go anywhere they will have to catch the bus or cycle. I asked DH what will happen if he can't get fule and he said he will probably have to sleep at work!

Clytaemnestra · 29/03/2012 21:13

I'm obviously out and about at the wrong time then, I drove straight into the garage on Huntingdon street this morning and filled up. ASDA was pretty clear too.

boxyfoxy · 29/03/2012 21:27

yanbu

I fill up once a week, I go through a tank a week travelling to and from work and running about. I was nearly on E and needed to fill up yesterday but I put it off because I couldn't be bothered to queue. I thought that it would die down today, as I drove back from work the red light came on halfway home, so I drove to our local texaco, and low and behold I still had to queue, grrrr!!! I had to defend my place in the queue by some dick trying to pull in from the other direction, and I'd even let some old lady go in front of me (smug good deed) I filled up, and the lady next to me when I paid said, "well, I wouldn't have filled up if I didn't need to go away next Tuesday!"

Admittedly I didn't have to completely fill my tank, although that's what I do every Thursday or Friday, (depending on how heavy my foot has been in the week), I could have just put half a tank in, but I suppose my reasoning is the same as everyone else's, if I only put in half a tank, suppose when I need to fill up again in a few day's time there is no petrol!?

I have a feeling that this is a premonition of times to come....

CaptainKirk · 29/03/2012 21:36

The only thing causing the fuel shortage at the moment is people panic buying. Petrol stations usually receive a 4 to 5 day supply based on normal filling habits. When this is exceeded by people not paying attention to the whole story the stations can and will run dry until the next scheduled tanker arrives. As a previous poster said, there is no strike dates planned at the moment and they must give 7 days notice of a strike date! When they finally do by all means go out and panic buy. Doing it now is just plain silly and annoying.

When I filled up yesterday (because I was on "E" and the light was flashing) I couldn't understand why it was so busy until I saw the news. Today our main road was blocked because of all the people lining up at out supermarket petrol station. Madness!

bronze · 29/03/2012 21:41

You know the threads we've had recently where people have been bashing non drivers? Well...

maddening · 29/03/2012 21:46

I've missed the news the last week as out a lot so wondered why I queued on tuesday - was on the orange light but luckily filled up- found out when I got home - crazy!

2shoes · 29/03/2012 21:51

Thing is, logically we all know that if everyone behaved "normally" there wouldn't be a problem. I also know that people are stupid. This is them behaving normally. Still means there isn't any petrol, whether it's been caused by daft government advice, over enthusiastic media reporting or silly topper-uppers.

2shoes I don't need fuel for the next two weeks - I'm on holiday! My boys break up tomorrow but they walk to school anyway, and husband can cycle to work.

Lucy88 · 29/03/2012 22:04

So for all those whoare blaming the Government, let me ask you a question?

If they told you to stick your hand in a fire would you?

This is all down to idiots going into panic mode when they don't have to. All this - OMG, I'm going on holiday in a week, so I have to fill up now or I have a hospital appointment in 2 days and only have half a tank left, or, I have only got 3 pints of milk left and what if I can't get to the supermarket in the next 24 hours, is just plain stupid.

I am down to about a quarter of a tank, but I wouldn't normally fill up at this stage, so there's no problem.

I will only worry on Tuesday if all the selfish b***ds have taken all the fuel near me and I am not able to do the 2 hour drive to get to my Grandads funeral.

sharenicely · 29/03/2012 22:04

Joly which petrol station just had a delivery? I'm near brighouse and everywhere I went today was closed and I'll run out tomorrow.

gaelicsheep · 29/03/2012 22:06

Who else reckons that George Osborne has got his figures wrong and needed to make up a shortfall? What better way than get people to panic buy petrol? The Government knows that people are stoopid and can't live without their cars. Easy money.

lisad123 · 29/03/2012 22:06
