I have half a tank of fuel in my (petrol) car. I was not panicing and had no intention of filling up as I don't do much milage in my car. We are going away for a week on Saturday and it's a three hour drive, we were planning to take DH company (diese)l car and were confident he would be able to fill up before we went............cue panic buying everywhere and now everywhere round here has run out of diesel!!!
Local nurses have been unable to get fuel to get to work (rural area) and it is just bonkers!!! There is no stike even arrange yet - if there was we would have a full seven days notice.
Why are people so selfish................????

"People were told to fill up."
Oh, right, yeah. And people always must do as they're told. Because none of us has the brains to think for ourselves.

cwtch4967 · 29/03/2012 19:05

Yes my trip is important to me - I'm attending a family funeral and staying on with friends and family afterws for a few days - flame me for that if you like. A lot of people will be attending weddings and family events over the next few days and now many will be worried about if they can find fuel to make the trip.
My gripe is with those who have no intention of going anywhere but have bought extra fuel that they are very unlikely to need, thus causing a shortage at fuel stations.
There was a man on radio 2 lunchtime who had filled a jerry can with fuel and filled up his car "just in case" he said the fuel he had would now last him until June

I know. It's bloody stupid. They haven't even announced a strike yet.

IF they do, they are required to give 7 days notice.

So what the hell is the point in panic buying now? bloody witless eeejits.

I had the red light. Needed to put £20 in. Queueing halfway down the ruddy road. And for what? To fill up now for a strike that hasn't even been announced yet and which won't happen for 7 days after it IS announced.

I ask you.

JustHecate · 29/03/2012 19:09

oh - there's no point panic buying at all Grin that just causes the very thing you're worried about - no fuel available! But there's no point x 10000000 in doing it for an unannounced strike that will give 7 days notice when (IF) it IS announced!

MrsHeffley · 29/03/2012 19:10

I do but I also have the brains to follow advice when I thinks it prudent to,like today.

And op kind of wondering who all these people are that won't be going anywhere before Tuesday during a weekend forecast with lovely weather.

After I've done my food shop I for one will be taking the kids to the beach.

DeepThought · 29/03/2012 19:11

I am sorry for your loss

Are you sure you can use the company car for private business?

hattifattner · 29/03/2012 19:11

I agree - i went to get diesel today because I was on fumes, and need fuel for travelling on Saturday. I usually fill up on a Thursday. Today there were queues everywhere, mostly it seemed pensioners topping up their tanks with £10 of unleaded. Grrrr.

I dont begrudge anyone fuel, but honestly, if you have 3/4 of a tank, then you dont need a £10 top up!

TSC err they're coming for Easter and kind of want to see their son too,my parents who will be having the Easter break off(all work)and have a ton of other stuff long planned too.

They live a long way away and when they spend money to get here they want to see their family as much as they can. The dc will be in school when this has died down.

Many people will have planes, trains etc to catch, journeys to do this weekend(1st day of Easter hols Mon).

IndieSkies · 29/03/2012 19:14

Er, hatti, how do you know the pensioners weren't simply restricting themselves to a tennersworth on an emptyish tank, rather than 'selfishly' fill up? Maybe pensioners have more community spirit than the rest of us.

MrsHeffley · 29/03/2012 19:16

Sorry I thought that 1st time around then couldn't get to work. Not this time.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 29/03/2012 19:16

it wasn't tooo bad at my petrol station - there were a couple of cars waiting, but I've seen worse there most pre-bank holiday Fridays. i was on the orange light of doom so had no choice but to fill up, otherwise i won't be able to go to work and keep the streets safe for women and children.

NarkedPuffin · 29/03/2012 19:16

The problem is that *the government has TOLD people to fill up.

This is state endorsed panic buying.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 29/03/2012 19:16

We have a petrol mower. Guess what - it's out of petrol. Our lawn is getting really long. It'll have to get longer though, I have banned husband from going to fill the petrol can as people will think we are panic buying!

Am hoping that all the panickers will have filled up this weekend and therefore there will be plenty of diesel for us next week.

JustHecate · 29/03/2012 19:16

Actually, someone said something about conspiracy theories. I've got one - we're not moaning about yet another hike in fuel prices, are we? Grin we're focused on the threat of not having any fuel, so people are stocking right up. By the time this is over, we'll have accepted it! Grin

Yes I find it annoying, so far there's no strikes even confirmed and the only thing creating an issue is people panic buying. I'm a domiciliary care worker and am concerned about whether I will be able to get fuel tomorrow because of all the panic buying. What if this panic buying stops me (and other care workers, nurses etc.) from being able to get fuel for our cars and so be unable to see the clients who actually need us? I'll be setting off earlier than usual tomorrow and hopefully there will be petrol in the station (I'll be there at a time when most people won't even have woken up yet, so hopefully no excessive queues). At the moment I'm just counting on it all calming down and getting back to normal, but this could be a real problem if it continues.

MrsHeffley · 29/03/2012 19:19

No there won't.My parents are never here. The inlaws don't travel in winter(scared of ice, elderly) or summer(gardenHmm).

I can't believe you expect the entire country to cancel their Easter/holiday plans just so they can say they weren't panic buying.

JustHecate · 29/03/2012 19:21

Yes narked. Government puts yet more tax on fuel (from august I think)

People normally complain long and loud about this, great pressure is normally put on government. Truckers drive round and round M25 at 5 miles an hour Grin

Government tells us to fill up NOW NOW NOW for this (unannounced, 7 day notice ) strike. Fill your tank to bursting and store fuel in cans...

My conspiracy theory is brewing nicely Grin now it's the fuel companies and the government

Jux · 29/03/2012 19:24

If every time this story had been reported on the (responsible Hmm ) journalist had said that there has to be 7 days notice of a strike, then it wouldn't have mattered who said what about jerry cans etc, as everyone would know that they had at least a week.

Bloody journos.

ragged · 29/03/2012 19:25

yabu to be furious just because you had to queue.

I wonder what the psychology of panic buying is, do people top up when it's 1/8th, 1/4 or 1/2 down (typically)? If we can't buy any when we need to then we simply won't drive (appreciate not everyone feels that have that luxury).
