I have half a tank of fuel in my (petrol) car. I was not panicing and had no intention of filling up as I don't do much milage in my car. We are going away for a week on Saturday and it's a three hour drive, we were planning to take DH company (diese)l car and were confident he would be able to fill up before we went............cue panic buying everywhere and now everywhere round here has run out of diesel!!!
Local nurses have been unable to get fuel to get to work (rural area) and it is just bonkers!!! There is no stike even arrange yet - if there was we would have a full seven days notice.
Why are people so selfish................????

the thing is - there is no strike happening right now. There is no date given for a strike. There is as much fuel as there always is - so if people were behaving as they always do - there would be no problem.

People are creating the very thing they are afraid of and those panicking need to calm down.

I am watching the tv hysteria with faint bemusement.

We are returning to the uk on Saturday for the first time in three years (for a week) I am chuffed to ribbons that we have managed to time this so perfectly...

There is the outside chance that we will want to travel around a bit to see all the tellies we haven't seen since we emigrated.

But I suppose the heathrow travelodge will suffice, at a push.

madwomanintheattic · 29/03/2012 19:43

Rellies. Although I am looking forward to few reruns of supermarket sweep for old times' sake.

OddBoots · 29/03/2012 19:45

The UK economy was slightly negative in the final quarter of 2011, we're days before the end of quarter 1 of 2012 and the government is stirring up a load of spending. Very suss.

sensuallettuce · 29/03/2012 19:45

Awww thankyou lockets and TSC Grin. I live in hope the Scottish are being more sensible than us twats Southeners Grin

IAmYourSingingTelegram · 29/03/2012 19:50

Sadly not,Lettuce. The petrol stations near us are all out at the moment, and we've very little left in the tank.

NearlyMrsCustardsHardHat · 29/03/2012 20:02

I have to fill the tank each week (run it to red light) and DP needs a full tank every couple of days (luckily his work pay!) I bloody well better be able to get some petrol this weekend or my boss is going to be spitting feathers, as will I!

It's ridiculous!! There is NO strike as yet, there isn't even a whiff of one yet. People are morons and they piss me off royally.

MrsHeffley · 29/03/2012 20:05

Best get out there then now, failing that you could just start spitting feathers.

Sparks1 · 29/03/2012 20:06

I drive 200 miles a day to work and back so if this gets any worse it'll be a real problem.

Worse than that i'm driving 650 miles next Thursday to spend the easter w/e with the girlfriend. I just hope things have calmed down by then.

The one saving grace is i have a company fuel card so i don't care how much it costs per litre as i'm not paying. Filled up in a motorway service station today and even at their prices it was much busier than normal.

Blame seems to be being laid at everyones door but the one bloke who is ultimately responsible for all this. One Len Mccluskey of the Unite union. The mans a parasite.

AlbertoFrog · 29/03/2012 20:06

Sorry sensuallettuce, I was one of the eejits sat in a huge queue this afternoon in Scotland. Usually fill up on a Wednesday but forgot yesterday.

Didn't even know there were talks of a strike (too much Cbeebies in my house and not enough news)

NearlyMrsCustardsHardHat · 29/03/2012 20:09

Is it really that bad accross the entire UK then? Can people really afford to panic buy for no reason at these prices?!

I would do a midnight run to the 24hr self service pumps but DP is working away so i'm on my own with the kids :( I hope he can fill his car up to get home, or else it'll be a case of abandoning it 150 miles away and getting the train home!

Blu · 29/03/2012 20:16

Madwomanintheattic, I wouldn't worry too much - there is no actual shortage, or strike atm - tankers will be delivering overnight and all day tomorrow on ther normal rounds, filling up petrol stations...

whomovedmychocolate · 29/03/2012 20:17

Can I just point out that all those of you who filled up will be empty again by the time a strike bites. Surely you'd be better to fill your freezer with bread and milk because that will be the next run if the lorries can't travel?

I have to go visit sick parents this weekend. But if I can't go it won't be the end of the world. I'll survive, so will they.

There was a mini riot at our local Sainsburys service station today. Apparently it was the funniest thing ever, many indignant men arguing about who had the right to turn into the station first. Grin

Tranquilidade · 29/03/2012 20:26

I don't think this can be blamed on the public. It was a government minister who told people to fill their cars and get a store in their sheds. WTF?!! Shock

Today I have heard Tory politicians blame this buying on the tanker drivers, unions and, best of all, on the Labour party for not putting pressure on unions re strikes. How long are we going to allow ourselves to be manipulated by these clowns?

EndoplasmicReticulum · 29/03/2012 20:28

I remember the last time this happened in 2000. I didn't own a car at that point, so I was very smug. But the panic buying did spread to supermarkets too - a colleague filled her garage with toilet rolls and was still using them 2 years later! Not sure how long she thought the strike would last....

NCIS · 29/03/2012 20:33

It's a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy, I saw the queues so filled up today when I didn't really need to because I was worried that the pumps would be empty when I needed fuel to get to work.
