WIBU about Sunday dinner?

Winkly · 25/03/2012 18:38

DH thinks I was being unreasonable in planning a roast chicken dinner without either Yorkshires or stuffing. Was I?

Well, mash is BU.

But yorkies go with beef, not chicken, and stuffing is optional. The best roast chicken has lemon and butter inside and thyme or tarrargon gravy. Mmmm ....

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 25/03/2012 19:25

Lord, I missed the roasties bit.

Roast chicken can be enjoyed sans roasties, particularly in the summer, but in that case it isn't a Sunday roast in the proper sense.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 25/03/2012 19:30

Yorkshires yes, stuffing no, stuffing is only for Christmas dinner in this house.

ripsishere · 25/03/2012 19:31

I agree with everybody who says YABU. Stuffing can be bought in little balls. That Bessie woman works hard for me, pots, stuffing and yorkies.
I am so hungry. Pizza just isn't going to cut it is it?

Hulababy · 25/03/2012 19:33

Not sure DH or DD would be happy with no Yorkshire puddings!

FizzyLaces · 25/03/2012 19:34

Threads like this make me love Mumsnet Grin And YABU to not do roasties and stuffing and to not like roast potatoes Shock

DrCoconut · 25/03/2012 19:35

AIBU to have had egg on toast for Sunday dinner on an eat it or make your own basis?

FizzyLaces · 25/03/2012 19:35

And no yorkies Shock Shock

mumnotmachine · 25/03/2012 19:38

YABU!!
Yorkshire Puddings and sausagemeat and stuffing balls adorn every roast here!!
Along with roasties, of course
Plus mash as kids dont like roast potatoes
And at least 4-5 different veg!

I did easy roast today mind and did chicken breasts instead of a full chicken, and blitzed the spud in the microwave before putting in oven to brown, it was way too hot to have oven on for hours today, but I still wanted my roast!

HandMadeTail · 25/03/2012 19:39

We had roast chicken, boiled new potatoes, glazed carrots, beans dressed with olive oil, lemon juice, mint and garlic (known in our house as disgusting beans) and a salad with baby spinach, cherry tomatoes, cucumber and red pepper.

Pudding was a chocolate fondue with raspberries, blueberries and marshmallows.

It was abso-bloody-lutely delissi-ose, and I had no complaints as they would have been sent to bed with no dinner if they had.

YANBU

mumnotmachine · 25/03/2012 19:40

Ohhh egg on toast, mmmm

A strange alternative which actually works mind is poached egg in Yorkshire Puds with crispy bacon on side- delish!!!

surroundedbyblondes · 25/03/2012 19:42

Yorkshire pudding is for beef IMO. Just out of interest (and at the risk of stirring things up a bit) how many of the die-hard Yorkie fans actually make their own?

theinets · 25/03/2012 19:42

Tabby. Yorkshires with beef only as any Yorkshire person knows.......

Hulababy · 25/03/2012 19:43

I'm from Yorkshire and everyone I know from Yorkshire has Yorkshire puddings with ALL roasts, and also with things like sausages - pretty much as often as possible!

JustHecate · 25/03/2012 19:45

Yorkshire puds are bloody gorgeous with jam. They're wasted on meat Grin

Hulababy · 25/03/2012 19:45

surroundedbyblondes - I always make my own. Frozen ones definitely are not the same at all. Even if I sy so myself, I make a darn good Yorkie! I use a James Martin recipe and whisk it up really well getting lots of air in, make the batter in advance and leave it to chill a while and then bring it back to room temp before making them.

Winkly · 25/03/2012 19:46

Ok, I don't not like roasties but I prefer the fluffy deliciousness of mash and I make no apologies for that. Roasties stab the inside of your mouth with their sharpness then burn it with an unexpected heat.

Of COURSE I made gravy. "Naice" gravy at that. Yum.

Pre made stuffing is hard and dry and vile, I can't bear it. Bleuch!

Had we any Aunt Bessies in the house I would have made them. Alas I made DH 'real' Yorkies and now ABs are nothing but a pale imitation.

I also made carrot puree, and sprouts with chestnuts. No apologies for sprouts either, if you don't like them you're cooking them wrong. 2 veg is enough, there's only 2 of us and need room for dessert!

Mind, we rarely have a roast on a Sunday tbh. Have it at other times, just not often on a Sunday.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 25/03/2012 19:47

Make our own Yorkies here. I've tried Aunt Bessies but they have a funny flavour and are very greasy. We have them with chicken and beef but not with lamb or pork. Only have roast dinner about once every 6 weeks though.

One habit we have inherited from my Yorkshire grandparents is a bowl of slices of onion and cucumber in malt vinegar with roast beef, delicious.

JustHecate · 25/03/2012 19:48

Oh, I do, surrounded. 4 eggs and a splash of vinegar and they're bashing the top of the oven Grin

ElizabethPonsonby · 25/03/2012 19:50

Today's roast was chicken, roasties, broccoli, carrots, peas and sweetcorn, with Yorkies (not home made...hangs head in shame, but I only need 3 and seems a waste of time making batter for that...well, that's my excuse anyway Grin )

A definite no to mash with a roast though, that's just plain odd, like when my MIL first cooked me a dinner and it had peas and baked beans on the plate.....Confused

surroundedbyblondes · 25/03/2012 19:50

Hulababy - then I grant you permission to eat them whenever and with whatever you like Grin

Winkly - I'm with you there on the pre-made stuffing. We live abroad and I remember a relative going to great lengths a few years ago to import a box of sage-flavoured sawdust to go with the Christmas dinner. It was grim, and he was so proud that he had managed to get his hands on it Confused

SecretNutellaFix · 25/03/2012 19:51

Yes to the stuffing, Yorkie works best with beef.

Hulababy · 25/03/2012 19:51

Thank you :) I don't even eat meat - but I do like the trimmings esp the Yorkies!

Blu · 25/03/2012 19:59

I am Shock at the number of people who use all these trimmings indiscriminately!
