To expect severely disabled children aged over 10 not to be looked after in a creche?

Namechanged because I could be easily identified.
AIBU to expect that these children who are all over the age of 10 to be looked after in a facility that is completely geared up for preschool children?
They are only using this room for about 40 mins out of a two hour session. None of the equipment is geared for any child over the age of five.
AIBU to think that this is not the most appropriate setting for these children?

depends on a lot of things, severely disabled children are not all the same, so you need to expand on that

Pagwatch · 22/03/2012 18:15

I don't understand your op.

Your title says you expect disabled children to be looked after in a crèche, the body of it suggests the opposite.

What is your issue?

FrankieDee · 22/03/2012 18:16

It's quite a mix 2shoes 2-3 full time wheelchair users, sld as opposed to pmld. All of the children have severe learning difficulties, autism, genetic disorders all of the children are at schools for sld & complex needs

Guessing soft play argument

KalSkirata · 22/03/2012 18:17

perhaps you need to explain? A 'severely disabled' child could mean anything. If they cant walk, talk or move then why not (although they might get bored)
And maybe its al the struggling exhausted parent can afford/find.
Does this 40 mins affect you adversely in some way?

backwardpossom · 22/03/2012 18:18

Do you mean not to be looked after in your title?

2shoes · 22/03/2012 18:18

well if they have SLD(how you know this is amazing) then ait is most likely a good place for them,
what is the problem?

KalSkirata · 22/03/2012 18:19

so why is it bothering you OP? They are in chairs. Maybe they function at an age equivelent to the creche.
Again, how does it affect you? The creche is alowing it.

FrankieDee · 22/03/2012 18:20

Oh bollocks op really is not clear, sorry.
No I don't expect them to be looked after in the creshe.

OP posts:
2shoes · 22/03/2012 18:20

but why?
sorry not getting it at all

usualsuspect · 22/03/2012 18:21

Why not?

FrankieDee · 22/03/2012 18:21

OH FUCK,
My ds goes to this group. They have recently relocated and I am not altogether happy with the arrangements

OP posts:
KalSkirata · 22/03/2012 18:22

you mean you dont want disabled children in the creche with your under 5? What on earth do you think will happen?

2shoes · 22/03/2012 18:22

BUT WHY NOT, sorry you need to explain the problem. as so far it makes no sense.

Pagwatch · 22/03/2012 18:24

I think you are struggling to explain yourself op because you are aware that this is going to potentially upset people. Is that why you name changed too.

Do you have safety concerns or something? What is it that makes you uncomfortable about it?

silverfrog · 22/03/2012 18:26

I htink the OP is trying to say it is inappropriate, and possibly a little patronising, to just stick a group of severely disabled children with SLDs in a creche geared up for under 5s.

and that that is what is now happening to her ds and the group he attends, and that she is not happy about it.

OP - where was the group 'housed' before the relocation? why the change?

RitaMorgan · 22/03/2012 18:26

What is the problem - staffing, safety, the disabled children are bored?

What kind of creche is this - while parents do a course, or at a gym/hotel/shopping mall?

WorraLiberty · 22/03/2012 18:26

Sld?? Pmld??

Are these abbreviations particularly well known or is it just me being dim? Confused

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 22/03/2012 18:26

So you want the children to be cared for in an area with appropriate facilities rather than a general crèche where they maybe restricted by the lack of hoists, equipment etc? That is NU

FrankieDee · 22/03/2012 18:27

Right will try again.
Ds is 10. The only children using the creshe at this time are this group of 9-10 children. All aged between 10 -12.
I know all the children and their parents as ds is in the same school as them.
Their old centre has recently closed down and they are now in an inclusive setting (sports centre)

Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities

Severe Learning Disabiities

silverfrog · 22/03/2012 18:28

Worra:

SLD - severe learning disability
PMLD - profound (pervasive?) and multiple learning disability

2shoes · 22/03/2012 18:28

even more confused
so your ds is 10
the other young people are the same age group
so what is the problem??

Codandchops · 22/03/2012 18:28

I think FrankieDee means that her child is one of the group of disabled children and isn't sure that the setting is appropriate for them all.

Is that correct?

RitaMorgan · 22/03/2012 18:28

So is it a lack of appropriate equipment/play opportunities?
