... to let DS stay up to finish his homework?

Oh dear. DS2 aged 10 had a project and he seemed to be working well on it ... but it transpires it's due in tomorrow and he still has loads to do. He doesn't want his bath and it's 10 minutes to bedtime. His Dad is out but will hit the roof when he comes in. I am mentally gritting my teeth and working out how to forestall the meltdown.

My gut feeling is to let DS2 do the project, go to bed a bit late and learn his lesson. I don't think there's any point in sending him to bed because he is unlikely to fall asleep quickly or happily ... so he might as well be finishing his project!

Going without the bath is no problem. I would let him finish the project. Why will his dad hit the roof?

Once your DS is grown up, if he does a professional job, there is no saying - "oh, I haven't finished, I'll do it tomorrow" - he'll have to get stuff done according to deadlines.

Good for your DS for wanting to finish it - may teach him valuable time management skills for future schoolwork.

Good luck with convincing your DH!

Ds went to bed late tonight finishing his homework and he is only 7.

Hi thanks for your supportive comments! I did my DH an injustice [or maybe I just handled it well! ] - he did not hit the roof. He is generally pretty strict and I imagined he would do the "oh well that's too bad you didn't plan your time well, it's bedtime now so you'll just have to hand it in incomplete" ... which would have been tougher love than I am up for! But I told DH what I had decided and he wisely did not argue. Grin

So the project got finished and DS said next morning, quite without prompting, "I kept thinking I had loads of time and suddenly there was no time left! I won't do that again!" Lord love him.

Thanks to all
