To think that if someone doesn't indicate properly, any resulting accident should be wholely their fault?

I've noticed in the years I've been driving that about half the people on my town don't indicate properly or at all, especially at roundabouts. There are lots of big roundabouts in my town and it's a nightmare trying to guess whether that car that's indicating left is actually coming off or if they're still going round (usually still going round Hmm) or the car that looks like it's going right is actually going straight across etc. etc.

I think it would be a whole lot fairer if someone who caused an accident by indicating wrongly had 100% fault automatically. E.g. if car A is going round a roundabout, indicating left so car B pulls out but then gets smashed into as car A meant the next left, the fault should lie wholely with the driver of car A, even though car B should give way to the right.

AIBU? Or did that make no sense :o

yanbu

people who cba to indicate should be taken out of their cars and shot

AKMD · 19/03/2012 13:37

I was thinking insurance premiums and excess rather than death but maybe they should be given the choice?

YANBU but very difficult to prove it. DH has his own rules for roundabouts and I nag him every time about what he should be doing. 5 years after he's still ignoring me.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 19/03/2012 13:38

YANBU but it would be very difficult to prove

lesley33 · 19/03/2012 13:39

YABU - although black has a good suggestion!

Learners are now taught defensive driving i.e. assume everyone on the road is an idiot who doesn't indicacate, indicates one way then goes another, changes their mind at the last minute, etc. If you drive thsi way it doesn't matter if people indicate or not.

Seeline · 19/03/2012 13:39

I'm sure that much of hte congestion in our built-up areas would be reduced if people would only indicate at roundabouts. It really annoys me that people are either too lazy or too stupid to bother. I know its hard to steer and indiacte whilast holding a mobile ..... but that's a whole different thread Grin You are definitely NBU

A friend got knocked off her bike as she came out of a road - there was a car coming but it was indicating left; it didn't turn after all and slammed into her. The police said it was completely her fault as indicating meant nothing, unless she saw the car turning, indicating did not 'indicate' anything.

nobodyspecial · 19/03/2012 13:42

I always give these drivers a stern shake of the head if they can see me....sometimes I show them my fist or give them death stares if at traffic lights and they're next to me on a roundabout.

blackoutthesun · 19/03/2012 13:42

well if you 'forget' in indicate, then you really shouldn't be on the roads

people who use mobiles and drive should be shot twice

Does that include expensive German cars, as they don't seem to come with indicators.

Seeline · 19/03/2012 13:44

Black - I like your approach Grin

PattiMayor · 19/03/2012 13:44

Those people who drive along motorways in the same lane for miles on end with their indicator merrily blinking away should definitely be shot [mad]

blackoutthesun · 19/03/2012 13:46

oh the middle lane drivers, 3 times for them

Callisto · 19/03/2012 13:47

I always assume that other drivers are blind idiots who don't understand the basic rules and shouldn't be on the road. It's the best way.

peugotgringo · 19/03/2012 13:48

The indicator is just that though, an indication, not a firm promise!

I indicate for practically everything, even when I'm the only person on the road. This stems from being an annoyed pedestrian and not being able to work out if I can safely cross a road or not!

And I was always told you didn't have to indicate on a roundabout Confused

OrmIrian · 19/03/2012 13:53

It is definitely safest to conclude that every other driver is a moron. It really is. Because a sizeable minority are.

Re indicating! I wish drivers would indicate even when there are no other vehicles around - pedestrians also need to know when some twat in a car is going to hang a left without warning Hmm

Sidge · 19/03/2012 13:57

Cars in my area aren't fitted with indicators apparently.

So I've learned not to pull out until I am 100% sure what the other vehicle is doing.

The other side of the coin is muppets who drive along oblivious to the fact that their indicator is still on...

buttonmoon78 · 19/03/2012 13:59

YANBU to be annoyed.

YABU unreasonable to blame any accident on that though. You should always assume that any other car on the road is being driven by a wally. That's what my dad always taught me and it's stood me in good stead.

Never assume that an indicator or lack of one shows any intent whatsoever.

lesley33 · 19/03/2012 14:00

You are suppised to indicate for pedestrains benefit as well.

EdlessAllenPoe · 19/03/2012 14:02

Indication is part of driving - not doing it is bad driving.

that doesn't mean any resulting accident would necessarily be entirely the non-indicators fault.

we all know that certain vehicles aren't going to indicate, but are still going to turn due to their position and speed on the road....to ignore this and then blame them would be culpable too.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 19/03/2012 14:04

yup, you need to assume that everyone else behind the wheel is actively trying to kill you. take nowt for granted.

OneHandFlapping · 19/03/2012 14:06

PeugotGringo who told you that?

They should definitely be shot.
