to blame Comet if my fridge blows up...

i have an american fridge freezer which cost a lot of money and is only 4 years old.

i took out the extended warranty, in case it went wrong.

3 months ago, it did go very wrong. When i called the number to arrange an engineers visit, the bloke on the phone told me that he thought the problem sounded like it was a build up of ice around the fan. (its meant to be a frost free fridge freezer though....Hmm

when the engineer came, he said that was their 'stock' answer but it wasnt true, and he replaced a load of parts.

on Thursday last week the same thing happened, and the fridge temp went up to 14 degrees and its making a terrible terrible terrible noise!
i rang the phone line again, and they cant get an engineer out until Wednesday!

its making an even worse noise now and i rang back today - still cant get an engineer out any sooner and got the "stock" answer again. i know its not that, and if it is, what then? do i just put up with a fridge going wrong every few months? its meant to be frost free! ive had no fridge now since last Thursday. It doesnt sound safe to leave on, but if i turn it all off my freezer will defrost!

last time i rang i got a customer satisfaction survey at the end.....didnt get that this time! wonder why!!

there have been cases of these fridge freezers spontaneously bursting into flames....

aibu to think that if you have insurance they should bloody well get their finger out of their arse and come to fix it in a better time frame than a week!

There'll probably be something in your extended warranty wording about them having 6 weeks to sort it out. I used to work for DSG (Currys, PC World, Dixons, etc.) and spent all day, every day fielding calls from angry, fed-up people in your situation. I couldn't do anything to help them because of the company's stupid policy.
So YANBU to be annoyed, but you're being unrealistic to expect anything helpful from an extended warranty.

IHeartKingThistle · 18/03/2012 21:34

Fucking Comet - delivered us a broken washing machine and made us wait over a week for a replacement. It was not a fragrant week.

ThatVikRinA22 · 18/03/2012 21:37

well, based on this i wont use that firm again. I asked what happens when this warranty runs out - another firm takes over if i pay a premium.

this fridge is shit. fact. wont use samsung again either. bastards all of em. ive had to turn it off at the plug because i swear it was going to blow up....anyone want any icecream?

bastards.

They had a story about fridges like these on Watchdog last year. Some wiring was left uncovered which was causing the problems....look on the watchdog page to see if you have the same fridge.

ThatVikRinA22 · 18/03/2012 22:26

cant find anything on the watchdog archive....i had a letter from samsung to say some of these fridges were starting fires! Shock and now i darent go to bed....the noise its making is deafening! ive had to shut the doors and turn the tv up....

im hoping this thread will be evidence if i am roasted in the night....

DH says that the batch that had the problem was contacted. What exactly did the letter state?
Did it say to take any action?

ThatVikRinA22 · 18/03/2012 22:45

they came out and fitted something to it....was a 2 minute job. but the noise this thing is now making is deafening....am not a happy bunny with either samsung or comet tonight i have to say.

not to mention the fact i have had no proper or working fridge for a week. pants customer service and pants appliance imo.

SecretNutellaFix · 18/03/2012 22:47

Is there a lot in the freezer?

SecretNutellaFix · 18/03/2012 22:47

tbh- You are lucky getting an engineer for Wednesday at the moment. Dh booked someone on for a repair on Friday and the earliest that came up was next Wednesday.

ThatVikRinA22 · 18/03/2012 22:53

secret - a fair bit - enough to not want to turn it off and waste it all. I wonder if i ring back tomorrow and tell them if it burns i will sue their arses to kingdom come it would make any difference.....

its deafening,. i cant hear the tv over it, and its in the next room....its going to go kaboom....

Just get rid and buy new one. If and when they do come and repair it you can flog it off for £50 on Gumtree or something. We had an indesit washing machine that died every year once a year. We got the extended warrantee from dixons (where we bought the machine from). The amount of time I've had off waiting for the repair man to come, suck his teeth about not having the right parts (even though we told them the error code) and then return 2-3 weeks later (the longest I waited was 5 weeks), I could have bought a miele easily. Angry

I blame it on the combination of crappy indesit w/m and crappy service/warrantee.

Appliances online is a great place to buy such machines. Cheaper than shops and delivers next day.

iscream · 19/03/2012 04:18

I'm surprised it hasn't been recalled if they have had them catching fire. I'd replace it if you are able to do so, then sell it as drcrab suggests.

ThatVikRinA22 · 19/03/2012 16:09

i cant really afford to just get rid and buy again - it was £800 which if it only lasts 4 years is a bit crap! its still whirring and buzzing....and its still 14 degrees in there....but i could only really replace it with another american size model as the gap it fits was purposely left for a side by side american fridge freezer - no spare money at present.

They aren't cheap that's for sure. Hopefully they will come back and fix it up soon. I am hoping my dryer doesn't kick the bucket anytime soon because I can't afford to buy another one right away.
