to be very happy with my new COUNCIL FLAT?

I actually am and I can't quite believe it! It is a pita to bring shopping up the 2 flights of stairs but that is something we will get used to. I keep forgetting when I nip to the supermarket with toddler DC4, to only pick up a few things and end up with 5 bags of stuff and then I remember I have to get up the stairs with him and them!!

Apart from that, the flat is easy to keep clean (all on one level), we have 2 brand new balconies big enough to sit out on and grow some stuff on. The whole block's exterior has also been painted. We have a shared garden which the other 2 flats don't use so they have said they are fine with our trampoline being put up. The neighbours seem quiet, only hear them close their doors really. There are always spaces right outside the entrance door for our 2 cars and it is bloody cheap - £378 per month! We have not seem the benefit of that this month as we had to buy quite a bit of stuff - new cooker, curtains and rugs which came to over £600 but from next month we should be much better off. The area is actually a more 'sought after' part of town so we have been told and is much greener and there is a park/cycle track right next door, much better than the area we were living in and paying £900 for a mouldy house in.

I have also discovered that we are walking distance from the train station (about 15 mins) so I can return to work in London when I find a job and childcare and feeling positive about that) without having to pay out extra for petrol to station and car park fees which are extortionate here.

Oh we were also given a free paint pack from the council, could choose our colour scheme and it included enough for the whole place (3 beds) even down to gloss for skirting boards, masking tape and dust sheet. Over £200 pounds worth. There was laminate down already throughout the whole flat so the only flooring we had to put down was in the loo and bathroom.

I cannot believe that I feel rather happy and secure here. DCs are fine with it and it's closer to their schools. Total transformation in my way of thinking because I was terrified before we actually moved in. It actually sort of feels like we are in a holiday apartment. AIBU to extremely grateful to my local council who I had thought were fucking bastards!?

hairylemon oh yes - a sort of 'only fools and horses' where they become miwwyonaires after such a dreadful start to their council life Grin

gordyslovesheep · 17/03/2012 16:47

well done OP have a gold star for your special chart of love and unicorns ...may rainbows forever shine out of your arse cheeks etc etc

usualsuspect · 17/03/2012 16:48

'Council life' Hmm

Lueji · 17/03/2012 16:49

Sorry, but LOL.

I really think you should write to the council and apologise to them. :o

What did happen to the trampoline, though?

MrsSleepy · 17/03/2012 16:52

You didn't receive an extra payment, Because of the Irish bank holiday everyone due their tax credits on Monday or Tuesday were paid yesterday or today.

Kaekae · 17/03/2012 16:52

Good for you, my DP I had to work our backsides off to get a mortgage for a roof over our heads.

HairyLemon · 17/03/2012 16:52

Exactly sairy

I'm thinking the final episode will see op getting a job as a housing officer, righting all the wrongs of social housing waiting lists. The killer bit being her housing officer himself in need of a council flat and she merely smirks at his application form :::roll credits:::

usualsuspect · 17/03/2012 16:53

Here comes the outrage ...

OTheHugeManatee · 17/03/2012 16:54

Is this about the thread where someone was annoyed that they'd been given a council flat in a block rather than a house and got a bit toasted for saying so? Is this that OP come back to say she takes it all back and actually the new flat is great?

If so I fail to see why all the vitriol Confused

BukimiNoTaniGensho · 17/03/2012 16:56

you missed the rest Manatee. She already came back to tell us all that the flat was made of solid gold and that she now has eleventy thousand pounds a week to spend on shoes and trampoline acoutrements.

TheVermiciousKnid · 17/03/2012 16:59

Previous thread here. :)

Labootin · 17/03/2012 17:00

The OPmhas missed amtrick tbh .she should be a LP

the handyman bought in to sort out the crap free painting ...and they fall in love and go to the Bahamas on honeymoon courtesy of tax credits.

blighter · 17/03/2012 17:04

worral - you have your dogs anal glands squeezed each month?

OTheHugeManatee · 17/03/2012 17:07

Bukimi - I see.

That'll teach me to let RL get in the way of my MNing Grin

OriginalJamie · 17/03/2012 17:16

OTheHugeManatee · 17/03/2012 17:18

Had a look at the other thread. Still don't really see why all the vitriol, sorry. This thread is weird.
