to think that DD can wear DS's old pyjamas if she wants to? (warning - trivial!)

OK, so apparently I am going to give my 5 year old DD an identity crisis by letting her wear DS's old jammies. By old I mean too small for him, now fit her, but happen to have Star Wars, Ben 10, Supermario etc on them and she LOVES them and has been desperate to get her paws on them.

My friend is concerned. So concerned that she has (very kindly) given her two pairs of fushia pink Disney-esque jammies for her birthday because 'it's a shame she's wearing all that boy stuff'. Grin DD loves them too and sees no difference and neither do I. Do I let her carry on in wearing his old gear or will she have grown a moustache by the time she's 6 unless I put a stop to all this folly?

Let her wear them! Who else sees them anyway, she's only at home.

FamiliesShareGerms · 16/03/2012 06:59

Ridiculous - YANBU at all.

I have more issue with the Disneyfication of small girls than a bit of tomboy / hero worshipping big bro / they're only PJs!

Friend needs to butt out!

Megatron · 16/03/2012 07:00

She is currently strutting around in a fetching pair with Yoda on the front, she thinks they're ace! She's been wearing his old ones for weeks and I didn't give it a thought until my friends comments that I should get her more 'girls stuff'. The less sparkly stuff in my house the better as far as I'm concerned. Smile

It's fine!! Grin

Your friend is weird. When I was little I had teenage mutant ninja turtles stuff. Pyjamas, duvet cover and toys.

No moustache here Grin

catsareevil · 16/03/2012 07:05

Your friend is being strange. What is wrong with a girl wearing 'boy' clothes. If they like Mario/ben 10/ star wars etc then they are going to struggle to find 'girl' clothes with them on the front.

I buy 'boys' clothes for my DD's when they want them. They seem to be OK so far.

Grumpla · 16/03/2012 07:08

Biscuit for your very odd friend.

Safire · 16/03/2012 07:08

YANBU. I'd do the same if the situation came up.

diddl · 16/03/2012 07:10

My daughter had as many of her brothers hand me downs as possible.

mrspnut · 16/03/2012 07:11

My dd2 has no older brother and she only has star wars, skeleton and Ben 10 pyjamas. She only has boxer shorts as well.

ripsishere · 16/03/2012 07:11

Watch out for her lezzyfying herself in other ways though. She may want to buy a motorbike and become a bricklayer.
What utter twaddle some people talk. If you haven't taken the labels off, return the disney shite and spend the cash on something else.

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 16/03/2012 07:12

Your friend is weird. When I was about six or seven I would have given my best super bouncy power ball from the machine outside the sweet shop to get my hands on a pair of pyjamas with The A Team on them, like the boy next door had. I used to watch them on the washing line when his mum put their washing out and wonder if anyone would notice if I stole them. I don't see why cartoon characters and Star Wars have to be 'boy' stuff in some peoples eyes.

OddBoots · 16/03/2012 07:12

If it helps, they sound like the kind of PJs I would buy new for my dd. She likes the pink sparkly stuff but she loves traditionally boy stuff too.

greenbananas · 16/03/2012 07:14

I feel that encouraging all girls to wear pink and identify with Disney princesses is far, far worse than letting them wear 'boy' pyjamas!

But then I quite enjoy messing with people's ideas about gender stereotyping. For example, last week, DS (aged 3) insisted that he wanted to wear his friend's Disney princess dress to the local shop. I let him wear it - just to see the look on my neighbours' faces Grin

OrangeCrushed · 16/03/2012 07:15

Thats nothing, I told my DP the other day if I ever have a boy, as a baby I am going to put tights on him under his trousers as I know from having dd that socks are impossible to keep on a baby.

DP raised his eyebrows but I told him not to worry, they would be cream/white if i cant find blue ones! :o

EdithWeston · 16/03/2012 07:16

I hand everything still fit to wear down between mine. It is the sensible, thrifty thing to do.

Megatron · 16/03/2012 07:16

Thank God, I was beginning to wonder if I was the weird one! Apart from the fact that she loves them, they're perfectly wearable and it seems like a waste of money to buy her new ones.

I have checked her face this morning and there does not appear to be any facial hair present at the moment, though clearly this is something I need to keep an eye on. Smile

YANBU but your friend is

Eglu · 16/03/2012 07:18

That is the kind of thing my friend buys for her dd, as she is an only, and loves all 'boy' stuff.

I now have a dd after 2 dses and I'm with you on as little sparkly pink crap in my house.

NaughtyMrChicken · 16/03/2012 07:19

YANBU I came from a family of 6, hand me downs were very normal and I'm not scarred for life.

Grin
camdancer · 16/03/2012 07:36

DD wears DS's hand me downs. I think your friend would be more worried that some of DS's things are pink and sparkly - bought specially for him. (Do I mention the skirts?) DD on the other hand loves Cars and Toy Story so get lots of her stuff in the boys section. YANBU.

MsF1t · 16/03/2012 07:40

ripsishere - our daughter will have a motorbike whether she wants one or not. :D

Yeah, OP- your friend is demented. I agree totally with the poster above who dislikes the Disnification of girls. It makes me stabby. Oh, and I liked Batman and 'boy' things and insisted on having short hair when I was little. Didn't do me any harm.

GrimmaTheNome · 16/03/2012 07:43

I think this will be one of those rare threads that's unanimously 'YANBU'

CoffeeDog · 16/03/2012 07:48

My twin ds's quite like wearing their big DD old pj's..... they are pink and the boys love pink....

i often find them dressed up like princess in the dressing up box... while DD is dressed as a pirate ;)

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 16/03/2012 07:48

What are you thinking?? Poor little mite :(

Being allowed to wear her brothers PJ's that she loves - such cruel cruel mothering Grin

Leave the Disney Princess ones in the packet and if she doesn't need anymore PJ's before she grows out of that size then re-gift or donate to a charity shop. There's nothing wrong with them either - but they aren't compulsory!

Ephiny · 16/03/2012 07:48

Let her wear them if she wants, what's the harm in it?

It's kind of your friend to give the 'girly' PJs but a bit odd for her to be 'concerned'. Who would have thought the fashion police would be worrying aout what a 5 year old wears in bed?!
