to think that DD can wear DS's old pyjamas if she wants to? (warning - trivial!)

OK, so apparently I am going to give my 5 year old DD an identity crisis by letting her wear DS's old jammies. By old I mean too small for him, now fit her, but happen to have Star Wars, Ben 10, Supermario etc on them and she LOVES them and has been desperate to get her paws on them.

My friend is concerned. So concerned that she has (very kindly) given her two pairs of fushia pink Disney-esque jammies for her birthday because 'it's a shame she's wearing all that boy stuff'. Grin DD loves them too and sees no difference and neither do I. Do I let her carry on in wearing his old gear or will she have grown a moustache by the time she's 6 unless I put a stop to all this folly?

Ripishere

I lknow women who ride motorbikes. Why do you think they are just for men?

Were you not aware that women rode motorbikes during the War as despatch riders, carrying valuable, secret messages to, from and for Bletchley Park?

As for jobs, I have seen women on the television being interviewed because their jobs are gender sterotypes like motor mechanics. the publicity was to enable other girls / women to think about that sort of job.

What I don't like about Disney is that it takes our stories and takes out copyright (or whatever the legal term is) for British stories like Winnie the Pooh. And this latest one where a pub called The Hobbit , which has been called that for years, has been told to change its name because Disney has the 'copyright' to the name. I would suggest that none of us buys anything at all connected with Disney.

I never dressed my DC in anything with promotion messages on them.

PJ's are only the start of it, soon she will wear his hoodies and coats in public oh the shame

I just wish dd would wear more of ds's cast offs

TheCunningStunt · 16/03/2012 07:52

Dd wears DSs too! I Saved all his fleece winter ones from this year for her next winter. YANBU

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 16/03/2012 07:53

DD has two older brothers and will be wearing boys hand-me-downs for as long as I can get away with it. Some of her favourite t-shirts are her brothers ones and we've never had an issue with her wearing boys PJs.

MadderHat · 16/03/2012 07:55

I was very happy with my DH when he said that if my DS (age not quite 3 at the time) wanted a dress, he could have one. DS didn't repeat his desire, but if he asked strongly enough, he'd have a dress. DS also has a dolly and a pushchair, after all Daddies look after children too. Oddly enough, DH also dislikes my DD wearing dresses... DD (18 months) wears all her brother's handmedowns and pink is banned (as I loathe the colour) until she's old enough to express a want it for herself. She looks gorgeous in navy.

ripsishere · 16/03/2012 08:21

{shok] that anyone took me seriously. Lezzyfication isn't a word AFAIK and, although I would strenuously attempt to stop DD from riding a motorbike, if that's what she wants, it is her choice.

ripsishere · 16/03/2012 08:21

That didn't work did it? Shock

treadwarily · 16/03/2012 08:23

I think your friend has issues.

Let your dd wear the jarmies, it's important to let children make their own choices about as many things as possible, it's how they develop their self esteem and identity.

My ds is desperate to get his hands on some of his big sister's hand me downs, it's normal for them to look up to the big sib.

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 16/03/2012 09:17

I have been putting my DS, nearly 2, in a pink sleeping bag with a sweet fairy on it. It was the only one that was both warm enough and long enough for him still and I didn't want to fork out on one that would only be used a couple of months in the winter. Last week I got him a couple of lightweight ones for spring, one with cars and one with a fire engine on. When I put him in one of them he said "No, pink one, want fairy!" most indignantly! I think they like what they like and there's no point in trying to stop them. Also they do tend look up to their older siblings so is natural to want to copy them.

Plus is better for the environment if stuff gets reused. I've swapped a lot of clothes with a friend who had a boy first and then a girl which worked well as a way of reusing stuff if you're not too keen on boys in pink skirts.

Mrsjay · 16/03/2012 09:21

MY 18 year old DD saw Doctor who jammies in next and was desperate to go up to an age 15 she said she would squeeeze into little boys Pjs if she had to Grin , are girls not allowed to like ben 10 or supermario , I would think your friend is gender sterotyping Wink and would tell her , Get your DD a ben 10 t shirt and watch your friends head explode ,

brighthair · 16/03/2012 09:21

qazxc · 16/03/2012 09:25

in the home, let them wear whatever they want to wear imo. if she loves the pyjamas why shouldn't she wear them?

Longtalljosie · 16/03/2012 09:27

DD (2yo) is currently sat next to me on the sofa wearing handmedown navy blue tigger pyjamas from her (male) cousin. She loves them.

Methe · 16/03/2012 09:27

How bizarre Hmm

My ds has gone to school wearing fifi and the flower tot pants before now, he's 3, he doesn't care!

seeker · 16/03/2012 09:28

My 11 year old do is currently wearing his sister's outgrown green satin pyjamas. He LOVES them- do you think he's going to end up as Oscar Wilde?

If your dd likes them then that's fine. I personally both loved wearing my brother's hand me downs because I worshipped him, but simultaneously pined for girl stuff. Even though there wasn't much girl stuff around at The Dawn of Time.

tabulahrasa · 16/03/2012 09:35

Well I didn't even have pyjamas as a child, never mind boy ones. I had nighties, the ultimate in 'girly' nightwear - and I still have a tache :(

stealthsquiggle · 16/03/2012 09:37

Your friend needs to get a grip, OP.

My exceedingly pink-inclined DD wears all DS's cast offs - some days she is top to toe in pink, other days top to toe in DS's old stuff - whether pyjamas or "day" clothes. Every now and again I produce another box of appropriately sized cast-offs and she has a wonderful time going through all her "new" clothes. She even loves a football kit DS was given with his name on.

LovesBeingWearingSkinnyJeans · 16/03/2012 09:40

To me this is akin to forcing a leftie to write with their right hand.

fuzzpig · 16/03/2012 09:41

Boys jammies are usually much nicer! Full of cute dinosaurs, aliens and trains etc rather than bland fairies and cupcakes. I usually get my DD boys ones, she's 4 and is generally quite girly but she loves the ones I choose. Mini Mode at Boots is fab for boys.

It has saved some money too as her little brother has her old ones.

ariadne1 · 16/03/2012 09:43

No Youi will most probably have your childre removed fro you for this!
What do you think?

earlyriser · 16/03/2012 09:49

I'm hoping that it is just because the op is talking about pjs that will be worn in the house, and not beacuse it is a girl wearing boy hand me downs, that this thread is way more unamimous than the one the other day (about the boy wearing 'girls' clothes) Grin

StealthPolarBear · 16/03/2012 09:50

Letting her wear pyjamas she wants to wear, you awful mother! That goes for the pink ones too - you said she liked them

pinktrees · 16/03/2012 09:54

My DD loves pink, fairies and princesses and she is very girly. However, she will still wear DS's old clothes occasionally. She doesn't like most of his stuff, but I am happy for her to wear the stuff she does like. IMO if your DD has 3 pairs of PJs from your DS that fit her and that she likes, it was really wasteful and interfering of your friend to buy her some more.

anonacfr · 16/03/2012 09:58

I want some Yoda PJs!
