There, now I've got your attention...

Go and book a smear test. Yes, YOU.

I'm having emergency treatment tomorrow to remove a large part of my cervix, so I probably won't be able to carry a child to term successfully. I am 24, and otherwise healthy; I don't smoke, hardly drink, exercise regularly, I'm not overweight and I eat more fruit and vegetables than is necessary.

Just get checked. It's really, really important.

Thanks

Thank you for your time.

I don't understand why they put it so late in this country. Testing needs to begin once a woman is sexually active.

I'm so sorry to hear about your situation, OP. Best of luck with the operation.

Everyone else- go for your smear! It doesn't hurt and it could save your life.

Very clever OP... thanks for your (surely timely for someone!) attention-grabber.

Good luck for today, really hope all goes well Thanks

I'm having the same thing later today. I have always had normal smears and had last one 3 years ago. Now have CIN3 and needs to be removed under general with a loop excision, as like you, I have a large area of abnormality. Luckily I already have children and am not planning any more. I am worried about the effects on my pelvic floor which isn't great anyway.

Good luck for later.

EasilyBored · 16/03/2012 10:27

I just got the all clear from my most recent one, sorry OP, hope it goes well.

NONE of my friends (all 25-30) have ever had one though, despite all my nagging encouragement.

valiumredhead · 16/03/2012 10:28

God, I'm dreading the results, I offered up a little prayer as I left the surgery, My last one was 20005! Sad

imnotmymum · 16/03/2012 10:29

Good luck for tomorrow and bless you.

slatternlymother · 16/03/2012 10:30

WRT it hurting; I always found it to be totally painless. A bit like before you start your period, you're asking other girls what it's like and you get a few horror stories ("I lost a bathtub full!" or "I had to be admitted to hospital for morphine it was so painful") but when you actually get it, it's not that bad at all and you're left wondering what all the fuss was about.

There will always be women who it really is painful for, for whatever reason; one lady upthread had just given birth the poor thing, another had a bit of a heavy handed nurse. But if you do get a heavy handed nurse, then ask her to stop and go and rebook with someone else.

Oh, and don't book if you're anywhere near your period; this can give abnormal results too! It'd only end up with you going again at another point in your cycle to get a clear result, but a bit of a waste of your time.

valium try not to panic; only 10% of smears are abnormal. Youve been now, and that's just brilliant Smile

I'm so sorry you are going through this..

I'm 21. I have one DS and I have been told that I don't need one yet? Could I book one anyway?

valiumredhead · 16/03/2012 10:33

Oh just to clarify - sorry didn't mean to put anyone off - the last one I had was really painful, and I was there ages while she tried to get the sample, she was also really cack handed BUT that has only happened once the other ones I have had have been pain free and today's one I could barely feel what was being done. Feel a bit cramp now but it's nothing. Anyone who needs one, GO AND GET IT DONE!

valiumredhead · 16/03/2012 10:33

crampy

slatternlymother · 16/03/2012 10:34

LST I'm not sure; I'd go to your doctor and ask. They cost £70ish privately, so if you're worried I'd just do that. not saying you should lie and say you've had v heavy periods and bleeding in between to get one, oh no not at all

I actually thought of this thread and you OP while I was having it done and I kept saying to myself "I MUST have this done" over and over again.

Thanks for you OP

Archemedes · 16/03/2012 10:35

Good luck

ArielNonBio · 16/03/2012 10:35

All the very very best, slatternlymother and thank you for posting that in such a brave way xxx.

I had one recently. I had been terrified for years and thought finally "This is ridiculous. Get a grip". I went and it was fine. Luckily it came back clear, but it could well not have been.

Well done for starting the thread!

I was due to have mine in June but just found out I'm pg so will have to wait after the baby. Will be making sure to book it asap though.

And good luck. Thanks

slatternlymother · 16/03/2012 10:36

I'm not sure what to think valium, you thinking of me whilst having your nether regions swabbed... I think I'm flattered! Grin

Oh! You know what I mean Blush

slatternlymother · 16/03/2012 10:39

Congratulations flora! Do speak to your midwife; they will be able to put it on your notes to get the doctor to send you a reminder within x time of your baby having been born. Also, post birth you can get a false positive result whereby you'd need another test further down the line. Do bear in mind your post partum state though, and try not to worry if that happens.

So if you start having sex early say 16, you have to wait NINE years to have a smear???!!!!!

BornToFolk · 16/03/2012 10:42

Thank you for the reminder. I was just thinking the other day that I couldn't remember the last time I had one (well I know that I've had one when DS was fairly small and he's 4.5 now) so will ring the doctor and see if I'm due one. Is it once every 3 years you are supposed to go?

I always find smears painful. I don't know if it's because I know it will hurt and tense up or what. But it's so important to get done, I just grit my teeth and get on with it (and reward myself with a massive bar of chocolate afterwards!) It doesn't take long anyway. I'd never thought to take painkillers beforehand but will def try that next time.

Best wishes Slatternlymother Thanks
