There, now I've got your attention...

Go and book a smear test. Yes, YOU.

I'm having emergency treatment tomorrow to remove a large part of my cervix, so I probably won't be able to carry a child to term successfully. I am 24, and otherwise healthy; I don't smoke, hardly drink, exercise regularly, I'm not overweight and I eat more fruit and vegetables than is necessary.

Just get checked. It's really, really important.

Thanks

Thank you for your time.

Good luck for tomorrow!

catgirl1976 · 15/03/2012 19:41

Good luck and thank you for this thread. I'm up to date but a great reminder - well done

Sorry for your circumstances, hope all goes well Thanks

StrawberrytallCAKE · 15/03/2012 19:44

I was just about to say yabu its fucking disgusting!

Now I see, very clever! I had the same in December, going for 6 month check a bit early in April as would love to ttc no 2. Don't worry there are ways of keeping a baby in there. Good luck and I'm really sorry you had to go through this so early. Remember 95% of women are cured with treatment. X Thanks

slatternlymother · 15/03/2012 19:48

Thanks for the lurrrve ladies Smile

I am HM Forces; we start screening at 21. If you are worried, ask for a smear even if you are underage. If they refuse, a private smear test costs around £70 and you'll get the results after a week. Not ideal; but people pay more for private/4D scans.

Sorry to hear about that Sad

Slight hijack - anyone know when you should have a smear after giving birth? Am not in the UK so don't get reminders and pre-pregnancy I was having one every year as recommended by my gyne...

slatternlymother · 15/03/2012 19:51

Now I know of a lady who had one done at her 8 week check. I don't know if that's the norm, but you can certainly ask for one.

i had to comment very clever! and very considerate of you to care that others get help as well.
i had a smear test at 17 due to various problems with my lady bits, the results came back as abnormal. after going in for a coloscopy and the test results coming back as normal, it did scare me.
i put off having another test for 4 years until jade goody died and it really hit me, my Nan had cervical cancer, so did both or my aunts and a good friend at the time was having most of her cervix removed due to cancer.
i booked my appointment and it came back clear. now i book mine every time i need to.
its so not worth ignoring it for 5 mins of discomfort, i really think england should have the testing age lowered.
good luck wishing you all the best with your op. x

lazarusb · 15/03/2012 20:02

I was told after an mc that it should be at least 3 months after. Ds has just turned 9 so I know I'm due a smear this summer. I've invited dh along - he is embarrassed about someone else seeing his bits when he has a vasectomy!

RuleBritannia · 15/03/2012 20:03

There comes a time when you are discouraged from having a smear test. Smear tests are carried out as a matter of course (invited back every 3 years) until you are 65ish. My mother had cancer three times (lived until she was 89 though) and asked her GP for a smear test when she was around the 70 something mark. Despite her cancer history, she was told that she wouldn't have one because 'older' people were less likely to have cervical cancer.

slatternlymother · 15/03/2012 20:05

If anyone has any questions about smears, what happens with an abnormal one etc, please just shout up. I will do my best to answer any questions, and if I don't know; I'll find out. I'm seeing a bunch of experts in the field tomorrow, so I can pick their brains too!

Chubfuddler · 15/03/2012 20:06

I was told to have a smear ASAP after 6 weeks post natal as one was due whilst I was pregnant and for obvious reasons I declined it.

I had my first smear as a teenager as we were advised in sex ed to have one a year after starting having sex.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 15/03/2012 20:09

Thanks for the heads up. I am due one but can't yet as dd2 is only 9 weeks. I will book it as soon as I can.

Good luck for tomorrow x

DairyNips · 15/03/2012 20:11

I'm up to date but had colposcopies a few years ago for abnormal results. All clear now thankfully. It really is important ladies.

toboldlygo · 15/03/2012 20:13

Sorry to hear you're going through this. :(

I'm 22, have a history of abnormal bleeding between periods and after intercourse (only rarely, maybe three times a year, but still, y'know, happening ocasionally), have PCOS and therefore a vague worry in the back of my head that all is not right down there anyway, my mum has had abnormal smears... and I was recently denied a smear.

By the time I reach 25 that's nine years of sexual activity before I'm eligible for one. Shock

SoozyWoozy · 15/03/2012 20:16

Good luck Thanks

I can't remember when I started having smears, but have always been good at keeping them up to date... my mum was always very frank about going and having it done, was never bothered by them so I guess I had a good role model :)

I had a series of abnormal smears a couple of years ago, I had to go more frequently to monitor changes. Luckily they were normal again. I still had to go back more frequently than usual, but am now back on track.

I will certainly be passing on the 'good smear guide' to my DDs

Thank you for sharing and reminding so many others to go and get checked.

I haven't had one yet as got pregnant not long after turning 25 but will book as soon as I can after baby is born.

I've been trying to persuade my friend to have hers as the doctors have been sending letters for 3 years now but she just refuses Sad

TwllBach · 16/03/2012 07:04

Can anyone tell me please, what happens when you go? Does te doctor or the nurse do it and can you ask for it to be a female? Does it hurt?

Good luck OP, I hope it goes well and what a lovely thing for you to do, starting this thread.

QuietNinjaLamp · 16/03/2012 07:30

Nurse normally does it though my last one was done by a doctor as she examined me for other reasons as well. You can request it's done by a female. If you tense up it may be uncomfortable so take several deep breaths before they do it to relax your muscles. It's fine though so don't worry x
