I've found out that apparently now during pregancy you arent supposed to have any caffiene but if you do one cup a day! :O

I mean I overcame smoking in my first pregnancy and havent smoked since but tea?? its a lifeline I have a v. hyperactive toddler who wakes up at 7 doesnt nap and goes to bed at 7.30/8pm.

I can't survive on one cuppa a day ....just had one and i'm eyeing up the kettle again blindfold me chop hands of

AIBU to think most people will struggle with this.

YABU. I love coffee but am currently having ivf so have cut it out completely. First couple of days were hard, but it can be done

WorraLiberty · 15/03/2012 09:37

I don't think it's a new thing

They came out with this 3 or 4 years ago if I remember correctly

HellonHeels · 15/03/2012 09:38

200mg a day seems to be considered OK. That's two cups of tea approx.

OMGBFP · 15/03/2012 09:39

50mg average in a cup of tea, so you can have 4. or lots of decaff tea :)

4forkssake · 15/03/2012 09:39

I'm sure a few cups will be fine but if you want to stick to the guidelines, can you maybe have a few weaker cups (or will that not cut the mustard?)

KatAndKit · 15/03/2012 09:39

2 cups of instant coffee, or 3 cups of normal tea are ok. The guideline is to have 200mg of caffeine per day or less. it's only a guideline, it's not some sort of danger limit.

cup of nescafé = 100mg approx
cup of tea =75mg approx.

If you don't drink gallons of coke or eat a kilo of chocolate per day, you are probably ok with having more than one cuppa per day.

AllShiney · 15/03/2012 09:40

They do decaff tea now. That's what I drink after I realised maybe I wasn't sleeping because I drank gallons of the stuff.

MrsKittyFane · 15/03/2012 09:44

What next! Drinking Tea isn't the worst thing you could do!
:o
(BTW Bed at 7.30, wake up at 7am = Bliss)

Sockspence · 15/03/2012 09:45

are the guidelines the same throughout pregnancy, btw? I'm 42,467 36 weeks and can hardly keep my eyes open this morning. Could do with another cup of stinky instant coffee to operate.

captainmummy · 15/03/2012 09:47

Get some Redbush tea It's lovely, and has no caffeine.

lesley33 · 15/03/2012 09:48

YANBU. I would find this very very hard.

lesley33 · 15/03/2012 09:48

And redbush tea sucks - sorry buit it does. It bears no resemblance to real tea.

WorraLiberty · 15/03/2012 09:50

Redbush is to tea, what Quorn is to sirloin steak....

captainmummy · 15/03/2012 09:51

No Redbush is fab! I used to drink green tea, and prefer redbush now. Don't really like ordinary tea, that's prob the difference Lesley33...

Archemedes · 15/03/2012 09:53

Decaff makes me fall asleep

I suppose it can its just Arrggh another thing pg women cant do argh

I cant have 99's either summer will be a sad place ;( lol

OP posts:
OMGBFP · 15/03/2012 09:53

Redbush is awful stuff, sickly sweet and creamy Envy

KatAndKit · 15/03/2012 09:53

Sockspence I think the guidelines might be the same but how inclined people are to listen to them changes as you go along

1st trimester - Oh no, I can't have that it will kill the baybeeeee

2nd trimester - it's probably ok in moderation I'll have just the one

3rd trimester - mmmm give me more and a runny egg on the side please.

grubbalo · 15/03/2012 09:55

I went right off caffeine when I was pregnant and luckily actually like red bush tea.

But... I continued to eat blue cheese, goats cheese, rare meat and had a glass of wine once or twice a week.

So I would say just manage your risks as you see fit. I'm not advocating drinking 20 cups a day or a bottle of wine a day, but in MOST people, 4 or 5 cups of tea a day won't make any difference. I believe too much caffeine is thought to be linked to miscarriage so once through the first 12 weeks I would definitely have relaxed the way I thought ( had I actually felt like caffeine!)

Archemedes · 15/03/2012 09:58

yeah im trying to cut down to 3 a day and much more water so hopefully all will be okay.

OP posts:
captainmummy · 15/03/2012 09:59

I went totally off coffee when pregnant, in fact it was the going-off that alerted me to the fact I might be preg, as it happened before I'd tested. The only time I didn't go off coffee in the 1st few weeks, I miscarried.

Archemedes · 15/03/2012 10:09

Im sorry that happened captain,

I'm not much of a coffee person, im a tea bucket though.

I had alot of MS with dc1 so the milk in the tea made it quite sickly.

Sockspence · 15/03/2012 10:17

NHS have officially sanctioned Stilton and rare steaks now, so every cloud, and all that.

Aworryingtrend · 15/03/2012 10:17

YABU as the guidelines don't say you aren't supposed to have any caffeine. The guidelines are to have less than 200mg per day. One cup of tea has approx 50mg of caffeine (according to BBC breakfast on Tuesday) so you could in fact have 4 cups a day!

KatAndKit · 15/03/2012 10:20

And sushi, and smoked salmon, and prawns, and loads of other things that people give you funny looks for eating!

valiumredhead · 15/03/2012 10:22

Decaffe!
