Just.

Odd.

No focal point.

My DF has put an offer in on a to die for house and was telling me all about it - it sounds amazing - when I asked about the fire, she said it hadn't got one.

I.

B.

Do I tell her? She will be the talk of the town, what will the vicar think? I may just have time to stop this folly in it's tracks.

It's a dealbrekaer isn't it?

Poor poor friend.

Sad

we dont have one either. Dont even have a fake fire or anything!

ceebeegeebies · 14/03/2012 21:41

Are you my sister?? She bought a house without a fireplace in the lounge and is obsessed with having one put in Hmm Her lounge looks so big without one and I like it - not sure why she would want to pay £££ to have one put in!!

CailinDana · 14/03/2012 21:41

My house is superstrange! I feel rather pleased Grin

mercibucket · 14/03/2012 21:44

we had ours taken out - nasty fake thing. it's a tiny house - if we're cold, we just stick the heating on
weird English obsession with fireplaces and fires imo

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 14/03/2012 21:45

We don't have one either, it's a flat and wasn't even built with one. The only focal point in the room is me, which is quite right really.

thekidsrule · 14/03/2012 21:45

i dont think its superstrange as from what ive seen new builds dont seem to bother with these

but i love to see a fire in a room and if i moved into a place without one id put one in,my parents did and it cost a bloomin fortune

i think just looking at a fire makes the room feel and look cosier, but im a very comfort person like that

nothing i like better in the winter than bath, pjs on fire going all at 4pm

oreocrumbs · 14/03/2012 21:46

Oh I agree. We have a new build with a lovely large rectangular living room...but no fireplace.

Have tried various ways of setting the room out but its just not right. So have bought an electric fire suite to go in and make the room right!

It didn't occur to me at all that I would have such a problem without one Grin

Fuzzywuzzywozabear · 14/03/2012 21:47

We had ours taken out - it looks so much better now

OP YABU

curiositykitten · 14/03/2012 21:47

Mine doesn't have one. It's very easy to make a focal point of something else...

lynniep · 14/03/2012 21:48

we dont have one. our focal point is the tv!

We recently had our gas fire taken out as the back boiler was replaced with a combi boiler and the fire was removed at the same time- we never used it. We have gained a whole extra usable wall, and have taken the opportunity to get a bigger aquarium and put it there. Much nicer focal point than the crappy old fire!

YankNCock · 14/03/2012 21:51

My living room doesn't have a focal point, it has zones. The office (my desk and filing cabinet at one end), then the telly zone with sofa, chair, telly, rug, and at the other end, the 'play area' where all DS's crap goes. There is simply no room for a fireplace. The previous owners put in a fake one with an electric heater, but it just looked stupid and took up space.

urbanturban · 14/03/2012 21:51

MrsDmitri Grin

We don't have a fireplace but have a big walnut wood sideboard with matching mirror above-that's the focal point of our room.........it's also handy as we keep lots of crap important stuff in it!

I like the idea of being 'super strange' though.......d'ye think I can add that to my CV? Grin

ifeelloved · 14/03/2012 21:51

Yanbu!

We bought a house with no fireplace, 1st thing we did was to put a wood burning stove in, best thing ever.

Pearla · 14/03/2012 21:53

I like fireplaces. I am moving because this house has no fireplace and makes me feel weird, into a house with a fireplace. Blush

jinsei · 14/03/2012 21:53

YABU, it's no big deal. We have one and I like it, but I would buy a house without one if it had everything else we were looking for.

AnnoyingOrange · 14/03/2012 21:55

I'm liking the aquarium as a focal point

Seona1973 · 14/03/2012 21:57

our aquarium made a mess of the wall behind it and also marked the carpet so we got rid of it (and got a new carpet). We now have a free wall and much more space

SwedishEdith · 14/03/2012 22:00

We've not got one either and it does make me very twitchy. I've spent the last 5 years angsting about it. But the thought of reinstating it and losing all the floor space seems insanely expensive

wonkylegs · 14/03/2012 22:01

Surely it depends on the room - my dad has two lounges 1 with a fireplace, one without both work IMO
If it's a traditional room/house a fireplace would seem right but if it's a more contemporary room or one with an alternative feature such as an amazing picture window - probably not... Personally I like a working fire but couldn't abide a fake one Grin

rhondajean · 14/03/2012 22:05

My first flat had a fire and I had it taken put. Once I realised the extra wall space and organisational possibilities for furniture that arise from NOT having one, I swore to myself I would never waste space on one again. An I have not, and unless I move to a period cottage somewhere, I shall not.

HerRoyalNotness · 14/03/2012 22:09

not odd at all, I can't stand our new build with the fake gas fire thing taking up wall space. The lounge was so small it made furniture placement awkward. I'd only put one in if I had a massive room and it would have to be wood burning

peeriebear · 14/03/2012 22:10

How did your aquarium make a mess of the wall Seona? Shock the mind boggles. Did it explode? Did your cat mount an expedition for lunch?
Ours is sitting on the base of an old stripped pine dresser.
