Just.

Odd.

No focal point.

My DF has put an offer in on a to die for house and was telling me all about it - it sounds amazing - when I asked about the fire, she said it hadn't got one.

Do I tell her? She will be the talk of the town, what will the vicar think? I may just have time to stop this folly in it's tracks.

It's a dealbrekaer isn't it?

Poor poor friend.

A fire is ESSENTIAL, in my view. You can Burn Stuff. And it looks great.

EdlessAllenPoe · 14/03/2012 22:14

surely the massive plasma should be the focal point?

memphis83 · 14/03/2012 22:18

We have moved into a house without one, it drives me mad and want a fake one putting in when we decorate, DH disagrees, our focal point is a Fisher Price Little People garage!

badpoet · 14/03/2012 22:20

No fire here, I only really pine for one on Christmas eve. The rest of the time I'm happy with the piano, huge mirror or iMac being the focal point (depending on which chair I sit in).

ImperialBlether · 14/03/2012 22:32

I have an original Victorian fireplace in every room except the kitchen and bathroom. Love them in the bedrooms, though they take up a wall.

SwedishEdith · 14/03/2012 22:34

Piano? Great idea on the party wall Grin Our focal point is a doll's pram

FilterCoffee · 14/03/2012 22:48

YANBU. There has to be something like a fireplace to pretend that the TV isn't what you look at most :o

AnEcumenicalMatter · 14/03/2012 22:51

Our living room had 2 fireplaces when we bought the house. Who needs 2 fireplaces in the same room? Anyway, the chimneys were structurally unsound and had to be ripped down along with most of the rest of the house and the cost to rebuild them was begond our means at the time so now we have none. We do have a larger, less awkward shaped living room as a result.

As for a focal point, doesn't everyone point their furniture at the telly anyway?

RebeccaMumsnet · 14/03/2012 22:56

minouminou · 14/03/2012 22:57

I hate fireplaces. They make people think about lighting fires in them.
I hate fire.

Gavel.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 14/03/2012 23:01

Does that fire come with real crackling sounds RebeccaMN?

Still think it's second best.

YABU. We never use ours, and it just leaves me with a wall I can't use for furniture. There's a gas fire but that's just a massive waste of money and sucks the heat out the chimney, basically. When we buy a house I'd love to find one without a fire.

treadwarily · 14/03/2012 23:45

my house is 7 and has underfloor heating. no need for a fire. superstrange is looking good..

startail · 14/03/2012 23:53

Our focal point is a dolls houseBlush

Letchladee · 14/03/2012 23:58

We took ours out of our current house - see no need for one.

Personally, I dislike the fake electric / gas fires and think they are awful looking. If I lived in an old house with traditional fireplace, then great - but I'd rather not have one than a silly fake thing.

WibblyBibble · 15/03/2012 00:09

The focal point is supposed to be the fucking giant telly. HTH.

Pandygirl · 15/03/2012 00:09

Assuming a pisstake? Surely no-one cares?

But given the pecking order round here you can't tell can you?

iscream · 15/03/2012 04:44

Your ds is being vu! What is she going to do if there is a power cut, war, natural disaster, or zombie attack? How will they keep warm and cook?
HOW WILL THEY SURVIVE? Shock

Lueji · 15/03/2012 04:47

Fireplace?

Surely you mean telly. :-)
