Re 'Exact Name of Type of Roof Felt' for Home Insurance

Maybe IABU, maybe the girls attitude just got my back up.

Last night tried to get a quote for home insurance. A proportion of the house (approx 15 to 20%) is flat roof.

The girl asked what the roof was made of, after asking DP, I answered felt. However this was not acceptable to her and after a long conversation (growing more heated all the time on both sides) in which I told her it was just normal felt, she refused to continue the quote because I couldn't tell her 'the exact name of the type of roof felt used'.

I thought this was hugely unreasonable request as this part of the house was erected 20 years ago - how on earth am I supposed to know what type of felt it is!!!

After a great deal of digging we found the plans out and guess what? They say the roof is made of 'Traditional Build Up Roofing Felt'. So I was right - it IS just normal felt!!

AIBU at them being so pendantic? The advisors customer services skills certainly leave a lot to be desired given that I had explained the circumstances for requiring to change the policy (recent bereavement)

YABU. There are a number of roofing felts available on the market which come under the heading 'normal felt'.

They include torch on, traditional, self adhesive to name a few. They all have different life expectancies hence why the insurer needs to know the specific type of felt

Thanks for replying. I think it was more her attitude that got my goat tbh.

And when I phoned back today as they were by far the cheapest, turns out they DIDN'T need to know anyway as the area is less than 30% of the total roof, so all that aggro for no reason at a really stressful time!
