THEY HAVE DISCONTINUED MEDISED

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

DS hasn't slept since friday night. Neither have I. Stuffed nose keeping him awake. As a last resort, I went to three Boots on a quest for Medised then at the forth Boots they blithely told me that there was No More Medised. Well thanks medicine people. You bastards.

AIBU to want to go and do a dirty protest at Medised HQ?

bit late to this thread but anyone who finds Medised good might want to also try Ucerax. Think you can only get it on prescription though. DS1 was prescribed a massive bottle when he was about 1.5 and the doc said that whenever he had trouble sleeping because of sniffles then we could give him a dose. Ive only had to use it a few times but it really helps him to settle and get a good nights sleep but doesnt dose him up too much and you can still use Calpol with it

Reallyfaroutlookinghat · 13/03/2012 15:23

I'm pretty sure otc Nytol has the same ingredient, for any any adult swiggers of Medised.

IvantaOuiOui · 13/03/2012 16:14

Paramol has been discontinued???? clutches pearls Noooooooo! It's the only thing that even slightly helps my woeful periods. Will have to make my own concoction of codeine and paracetemol now.

SuperDuperJezebel · 13/03/2012 16:22

Aqually upset about that, Ivanta!

SuperDuperJezebel · 13/03/2012 16:23

And by Aqually I mean 'im equally'!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 13/03/2012 16:32

"And it's EUCALYPTUS." Grin Buppy, admit it you googled the spelling just incase. Wink

bumbleymummy · 13/03/2012 16:46

ledkr, I'm not sure what you mean by 'ignoring' a temperature (or what you deem 'high' to be) but not all fevers require treatment and in some cases, allowing the fever to run its course has been shown to shorten the duration of the illness and reduce the risk of complications. "Something not being right' isn't based solely on the number on the thermometer - how the child is apart from the fever is also important. My boys have been quite happy with temps around 40 and more subdued with lower fevers so it really does vary from person to person and can depend on the illness itself as well. There is a great deal of 'fever fear' that I think some doctors are now trying to overcome but it's been instilled in people for so long that they just automatically reach for the calpol at the smallest sniffle or slightest temperature rise 'just in case.'

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 13/03/2012 16:49

Having witnessed febrile convulsions I prefer to lower my children's temperature when they have a fever and if that involves the use of medication FFS if I feel shitty I take medication to manage my symptoms and maintain my comfort why the heck wouldn't I do that for my DC's.

bumbleymummy · 13/03/2012 16:56

Hobnob - Convulsions are caused by a sharp rise in temperature not a high temperature and will often happen before a parent even knows that their child is ill. Also, even though they are scary to watch they do not usually cause any damage to the child. From the NICE guidelines:

"Antipyretic agents do not prevent febrile convulsions and should not be used specifically for this purpose. "

Some parents whose children regularly have convulsions may be advised differently but standard practice is not to give paracetemol 'just in case' they have a convulsion.

bumbleymummy · 13/03/2012 17:00

Well if I have a stuffy nose I don't pop a couple of paracetemol or sedate myself!

OhChristFENTON · 13/03/2012 17:15

I do Grin well I do take antihistamine anyway

Actually when ds2 had his first febrile convulsion when he had the pox the paramedic ( yes it was frightening so I called them) told me to give him a dose of paracetamol there and then. I gave ds1 a dose when he started to droop during his pox experience because fc's can be dangerous and they can leave lasting damage.

So shoot me. meh.

Hecubasdaughter · 13/03/2012 17:16

I'll only take paracetamol if I am in pain or feverish. For a stuffy nose I would use eucalytus or menthol. I wouldn't use antihistamine for a cold for the reasons I gave earlier.

I would only use antihistamine for allergies or the itch of CP. Even then I would prefer to use one of the newer antihistamines as they have a better side effect profile.

I chose medication for my DC along similar lines tbh.

bumbleymummy · 13/03/2012 17:22

Fenton, very very rarely will a child have any problems after a convulsion. Antipyretics don't prevent them either (see above mentioned NICE guidelines).

HugADalek · 13/03/2012 17:32

Mine get phernagan for travel sickness.

Antihistamines helped my DD with rhinitis, so might help with a bunged up nose.

Always give ibuprofen first for illness with fever as it works better for my kids.

Paracetamol for pain.

Never really had much use for Medised once I had my daughter as it makes her hyper, so preferred to use paracetamol and treat the rhinitis with antihistamines. DS had it, never even got through one bottle.

BupcakesandCunting · 13/03/2012 17:48

As is par for the course with MN these days, there is a lot of wilful misunderstanding going on on this thread.

The majority of us don't pop paracetamol (ourselves or DCs) for a stuffy nose. Paracetamol does fuck all anyway. However, an antihistimine CAN be effective when your child (or yourself) can't actually BREATHE through the nose. When you can't actually breathe through your nose, you breathe through your mouth. So if you also have a dry, tickly cough that will be worsened by the drying effect of breathing through your mouth. It is HORRIBLE being unable to sleep for nights on teh trot because of a shitty cold. Luckily DS gets this only about twice a year so he gets Medised TWICE A YEAR. I'm hardly fucking drugging him to the eyeballs. And your shitty menthol and yewkyliptis only works IF you can actually inhale the stuff through your nose anyway which you can't if your sinuses are very congested. You lot must get some pansy-ass colds if wussy eucalyptus and fairy farts clear them up. Happy for you, I am.

ABF, nah. I did aromatherapy at college so I know me essentials Wink

Perzakerly what bups said.

And I don't care if ill effects after an FC are as rare as rocking horse shit, I will medicate as I see fit, - which actually is fairly seldom anyway.

BupcakesandCunting · 13/03/2012 17:56

And I am telling you now, DS had a whacking temperature last night (he does only get temps when fairly ill) and he had nightmares/restless sleep/crying due to discomfort. He isn't gaily playing Buckaroo whilst his body and face is burning like an oven.

OhChristFENTON · 13/03/2012 17:58

Your poor DS - that sounds just rotten Sad

bumbleymummy · 13/03/2012 18:00

I actually use Olbas oil and it does somehow manage to work through the stuffiness. Not sure about fairy farts though. I've never tried them...

Where exactly have I said never medicate or that all children play happily with high temperatures? That 'wilful misunderstanding' works both ways you know.

ledkr · 13/03/2012 18:05

My boys have been quite happy with temps around 40 BUMBLE I dont believe you.
And i think you are taking unecessary risks in not treating a temperature with modern medicine.
I prefer to live in the current century in which children do not often die of infectious disease or childhood ilnesses so will also continue to use medicines as i see fit and trust my extensive training and experience
What is everyone scared of anyway? Medication has been tested and licenced to within an inch of its life in the uk and safe if used correctly.
My baby has a minor fever today which was putting her off her food and making her cry a lot. A dose of calpol later and she was able to enjoy her day.Nowt wrong with that in my book.
