WIBU to have entered in to a Loud Parenting stand-off at the library?

I think I know I WBU. In fact, I have brought shame on MN by stooping to these levels rather than just smirking and ignoring. I apologise.

I arrived early with DS2 to library rhymetime and was sitting reading quietly in the corner. Other mum comes in and announces to the whole place to her toddler that they will now sit and read. Cue LOUD reading of and over the top expressions and actions to the disinterested child. Very LOUD and ARTICULATED. And for some reason, I decided to out-loud-parent her and do the same, but going up one, by reading the bilingual books Blush

In my defence, I did very quickly get a grip and stop.

She didn't, though. Went on for another 15 minutes and then was the loudest singer with the biggest actions during Rhymetime. Her dc did I mention his name was Zebediah? was more interested in making piles of books and picking his nose.

I already dislike her and I don't know her...........

This is a risk, workshy. I can't decide whether she would be the type to never turn on a screen or have 'me time' while Zebediah is around, or whether she makes up for MNetting all day by doing the Loud Parenting routine whilst in public.

workshy · 09/03/2012 13:27

I think it might be the second one hehehe

WorraLiberty · 09/03/2012 13:28

Perhaps the child's deaf?

Just throwing that 'out there' Grin

Pagwatch · 09/03/2012 13:28

Oh, the bilingual book was deliciously awful.

Grin

Performance parenting drives me nuts. I had a child who I had to be really clear and noisy with so I know some people have to do this. But you can mostly tell the difference.

nickelhasababy · 09/03/2012 13:29

oh, don't pick on his name! i love it!

i don't love her much.

Grin at the bilingual books! Grin

nickelhasababy · 09/03/2012 13:31

worra - if the child was deaf, she'd have made a bigger point of making sure the child was looking at her - touching the child towards her - not just reading loudly when child wasn't engaging.

Cherriesarelovely · 09/03/2012 13:31

YANBU! What a great story! I know exactly what you mean about that sort of "look at me, I am SUCH a marvellous, involved, creative parent"!! It makes me really cringe too. I think your responsed was hilarious!

cheekybarsteward · 09/03/2012 13:31

Think I would have said " What's that DS"? Yes, you ARE supposed to be quiet in a library".Silly cah!

Pagwatch · 09/03/2012 13:32

Nickelbabe, I have only just seen baby pics. How beautiful you both look!

WorraLiberty · 09/03/2012 13:32

nickel I was just trying to make the OP feel bad Grin

gramercy · 09/03/2012 13:33

I think Zebediah and his mum spend their time going round every public library in the UK. I have been the victim of "Not those books, darling, they're for children who can't read yet " as the mum eyes dd and me out of the corner of her eye.

I have been known to stoop to their level on occasions. I couldn't help myself saying in a stage whisper to the dcs once, "Let's go, it's too noisy when there are people PERFORMANCE READING Alfie and Annie Rose..."

YellowDinosaur · 09/03/2012 13:34

Howling at this! :o:o:o

Bilingual book is an act of genius. At least you were taking the piss :o

I really hope she comes on here!

welliesandpyjamas · 09/03/2012 13:34

I know the type, pagwatch (have one) but do you know, I don't think he was one if those kids. He seemed calm, you know. He was only about 20 months max.

thebody · 09/03/2012 13:36

Hate 'professional' patents, the ones who talk very loudly to their kids and look round to c if everyone is listening! I always yawn in face!

Rather rip off my own arm and eat it than go to rhythm time anyway! And I a childminder!

welliesandpyjamas · 09/03/2012 13:36

Such funny responses Grin thank you for making me feel less guilty about the stand off and the name piss take

OP posts:
cheekybarsteward · 09/03/2012 13:37

I like that gramercy, would be funnier if child's reply was "dadda!" as he is only 12 months old

fortifiedwithtea · 09/03/2012 13:37

She sounds a PITA and poor kid for being saddled with that name. Will probably go through life known as Z-Bed. You however were unreasonable but funny. I wish I had been there to see it. Grin

welliesandpyjamas · 09/03/2012 13:37

Looks like a lot of us have come across a Zebediah's Mum somewhere!

OP posts:
welliesandpyjamas · 09/03/2012 13:40

(worra it worked! Wink)

She did pause her loud readings to check out my performance at one point, and fair play to her, she must have accepted within herself she could not go one up from there. She just stuck to the Bob The Builder books. Reeespect. Actually, I think that means I won, right?!

upahill · 09/03/2012 13:41

Why do some mums thing they are children's tv presenters with their over the top booming voices and annoying mannerisms?
Awful!

Pagwatch · 09/03/2012 13:41

We have all met them. My fav was a woman shouting 'darling shall we find something a bit more complicated for you. These books are for your age group but they are far too simple. Wait! Maybe we should start french'

Small child looked about five and was standing on a chair, thumping on the side of a fish tank.

Pagwatch · 09/03/2012 13:44

Yy I know wellies. I was just trying to help you head off the 'but it could be sn' storm.
I am helpful like that Grin

exoticfruits · 09/03/2012 13:45

You just have to feel sorry for the DC-they often have to put up with it for years.
