Old work colleague, has posted a status update lambasting the ConDems for "making it so that anyone have their very own 'brown baby' now".

I normally don't give a crap about status updates, if they annoy me, I hide them, but this particular one has left me really, really riled.

I don't think she has any concept of the number of children just sitting in care for years and years on end, or stuck in abusive homes, because this country makes it virtually impossible for loving and caring people to be able to provide a home to a child that needs it, just because the respective ethnicities don't tick the government boxes.

AIBU in thinking that this new legislation is something that everyone, even if you hate the government, should be completely overjoyed about?? AIBU in thinking that she should at least have attempted a vague grasp of this particular issue before posting a sweeping anti-ConDem status?

It's about the Coalition government trying to speed up adoption procedures. Apparently Socialk Services spend years - in some cases - while waiting for ethnic minorities to come forward to adopt a child of their background. The new legislation will dispose of matching ethnicity so that white couples who do most of the adopting can take on an Afro-Caribbean child without having to wait 2 or 3 years. More to it than that though.

The larger view is that far too many people take up a slavish 'everything my party says must be right and whatever the other lot do or say is wrong' mindset. When sometimes the other lot do come up with a sensible idea, it gets flamed on autopilot. Some of what Labour did was great, other bits not so great, and some frankly criminally stupid. The current government are doing exactly the same.
