Mine is often unsuitable, apparently.

So, I am genuinely interested to know, what subjects do you think shouldn't be joked about?

Most humour has its roots in tragedy.

Sometimes it can offend. The trouble is that it's hard to spot the line in the sand.

Enough cliches?

Itsjustafleshwound · 08/03/2012 09:23

There is always something or someone at wrong end of a joke. If the victim can't defend themselves or realise that they are the butt of the joke then it really isn't funny.

'comedians' (yes, you Ricky Gervais) making fun of soft targets is just bullying.

peggotty · 08/03/2012 09:23

An obvious one would be child abuse surely?

Death when someone has just died. Anyone less fortunate than yourself. Personal attributes ie blOnde hair, big boobs, weight etc unless you yourself have these attributes.

roger - but someone somewhere in the world has always "just died"

I don't think there are any subjects that shouldn't be joked about as such, it depends on what the butt of the joke is...

If the joke is basically to point and laugh at someone because they're a certain race, religion, gender, sexual preference or have a disability then I'd object.

But not about the subject itself if you see what I mean

lesley33 · 08/03/2012 09:27

Racism, homophobia, etc

I guess no subject can not be used for humour, but it is hwo it is used (sorry serious post). So ethnicity can be used to make funny jokes e.g. the Asian family ordering the blandest thing in an English restaurant skit. But just being nasty about people and framing it in terms of ethnicity is not funny imo.

ShirleyKnot · 08/03/2012 09:27

Alright Hully? It's all been a bit barking round here of late.

TIS WAXING GIBBOUS!

Jins · 08/03/2012 09:28

Ah but I quite like the dead celeb jokes. Especially where Elton John is performing a version of candle in the sodding wind at the funeral

ShirleyKnot · 08/03/2012 09:28

ANYWAY, rather than all this angsty shit, can you come and look at my thread what I'm going to make about what to cook for my CDWM dinner party on Saturday please?

Please?

Jins · 08/03/2012 09:29

Link please

Hullygully · 08/03/2012 09:29

cdwm?

TheRhubarb · 08/03/2012 09:29

Where's this come from then?
I need to know who has taken offence and why - so link please!

Topics that are not humorous? Hmmm. It really would depend on the context. I have a sick sense of humour that would not go down on Mumsnet so I tend to keep it to myself, but even my warped mind wouldn't joke about rape/abuse/special needs. Having said that some rape victims joke about rape in order to regain control over the situation. Ditto the other categories I mentioned. There are a few stand-up comics with disabilities who joke about having a disability and that's different.

It's the thread about my murdered neighbours. I have deeply deeply offended and upset people. They are sorry for my children.

CDWM thread

Rindercella · 08/03/2012 09:35

Humour in death can be a bit of a relief sometimes. And (I am really sorry DH), I still laugh about when DH, shortly before he died, was admiring how great Alex Ferguson was for playing Gok Wan in his first team (this was after he asked me if Gok was in fact gay) Grin I think it was DH's morphine-induced state causing him to hallucinate that particular gem!!

Mind you, some twat one called me a retard the other day. As a 'joke'. That's one less person on my Christmas card list then Smile

DeWe · 08/03/2012 09:37

I don't like humour that's laughing at someone rather than with someone. I usually end up feeling either sorry for the person or guilty if I found it funny.
