UPDATE on to be pissed off I have been offered a council FLAT instead of a house?

Thought I would update on my previous thread as you were all so sympathetic and concerned for me Grin.

We have taken the flat and will move in tomorrow. We have no choice and will be unable to be put on the transfer list for a year and will then probably have to wait a further 2/3 years for a house to come up.

The flat is on the (top) 2nd floor of a small block. We are 'lucky' in that the block is being upgraded and they have put in new windows/balcony doors/front doors and replaced all the railings around the two balconies. There is one off the kitchen and one off the lounge. The flat is very light and airy (although was stinky) and DH has painted/bleached it to within an inch of it's life and it is now presentable. There was decent laminate floor down already and it has a recently fitted kitchen, new toilet!! and almost new radiators. We did not found any mould/damp at all which we were very impressed by! The DCs rooms are big enough and mine and DH's is much bigger than our current one.

There are 18 flats in the block in all and every 3 flats (Grd/1st/2nd floor) gets to share a reasonable sized gated garden that each overlooks. We all have large sheds as well so the trampoline and bikes can all get stored in there.

The block seems quite quiet. I am a bit meh about it now. I am hoping there will be other DCs in there that mine can play with and I will be quite happy. We have a very large town park/farm/paddling pool area within 10 mins walk. DD's sec school is walking distance and her mates live around the corner.

We have worked out that after paying rent on this, we will have over £2100 a month to live on! That is with just DH working. I can decide if I want to go back to work or not probably after the summer when DC4 is 2.

I have probably been worried for nothing and am looking forward to getting back on track and saving for a new house of our own.

Thanks to the council and all those who sent their good wishes Thanks.

it is a palace you have fallen on your feet for sure.

DM journs seem to scour MN for articles which they then write in the tone of "a friend of a friend...." so this will be in there tomorrow ...

CatPower · 07/03/2012 15:32

i.imgur.com/BwCTs.jpg for a working link.

Mrsjay · 07/03/2012 15:34

A working couple could have that left over lonley night TBH i think the OP is goading you all a little as she got such a hard time on her last post maybe thats why she put her left overs ,

Chubfuddler · 07/03/2012 15:36

I am overjoyed the trampoline has a home, I really am.

Bellstar · 07/03/2012 15:40

HA HA HA HA HA. Epic fail.

HalfPastWine · 07/03/2012 15:40

Thanks Well done OP on your new home and good fortune.

breatheslowly · 07/03/2012 15:42

I'm not sure it is the OP's good fortune so much as a systemic failure.

takingiteasy · 07/03/2012 15:44

I was all like 'ah that's nice' I never read the first thread but was feeling pleased for you that you were making the most of what you'd been offered.

Then the £2100 bit - wtf? We don't even earn that as a couple!

Sittinginthesun · 07/03/2012 15:50

.

Debs75 · 07/03/2012 15:51

FFS council housing is not subsidised. It is affordable housing. It is the private market which is ridiculously high, wether that be the fault of the LL, the banks or the mortgage companies.
Give the op a break, yes she does sound smug but that could be because she is happy to have a roof over her head and not being squeezed by the private market

porcamiseria · 07/03/2012 15:53

FFS council housing is not subsidised.

yes yes yes!!!!! hahahahahah

Codandchops · 07/03/2012 15:55

Blimey! £2100 over after rent! Glad you ate in affordable housing OP - you evidently need it Hmm

HalfPastWine · 07/03/2012 15:55

agree with Debs75 FFS council housing is not subsidised. It is affordable housing. It is the private market which is ridiculously high, wether that be the fault of the LL, the banks or the mortgage companies.

Pure greed.

bronze · 07/03/2012 15:56

Grin Grin Grin

this has to be a wind up right. That's more than we have before paying rent on our mould infested private rental. I thought we were doing ok Grin Well we are really, we manage to feed and clothe six of us.

usualsuspect · 07/03/2012 15:58

Goood luck in your new home op and lol at the indignation on this thread,

Al0uise · 07/03/2012 16:00

breatheslowly Systemic failure sounds about right!

Debs75 Are you joking? It's heavily subsidised and has been since it's inception.

Now Op - Im not a nurse or a doctor but i'd be happy to give you some contraception advice.

usualsuspect · 07/03/2012 16:01

How dare those council house tenants have any money,

LilacWaltz · 07/03/2012 16:01

My HA house Is £136 a week.... Is that subsidised then?Confused

sodapops · 07/03/2012 16:01

It's rather strange this.

Last week in the papers (again I hasten to add) that the government are considering making serving military personell and their families move out of married quarters after they have served 8 years because they could afford private rent or a mortgage. My DH has served 25 years and brings home just a few pounds over £2100 per month. Yet you can have that "left over" and still be entitled to social housing!Hmm

HalfPastWine · 07/03/2012 16:03

Exactly LilacWaltz My HA rent is the same as private rents in the same area.

FlossieTeacakeShouldFakeIt · 07/03/2012 16:04

I had no sympathy with OP on the last thread, still don't really, but I don't see what's so outrageous about her having £2100 left over after rent each month.

They want to save for a house, and will be able to do so. It's got to be better for them to be able to do that than be in cheap council accommodation for their whole lives. And they have 4 children, that doesn't come cheap. Everyone is equally entitled to council accommodation, it's just that some get lucky and some don't. Plenty of people take from the system when they shouldn't have to, I don't see why OP is any different.

However, I will change my mind if any of that £2100 is tax credits. Even then though, it would be the system that is too generous, OP wouldn't be to blame for claiming what she can.

usualsuspect · 07/03/2012 16:04

Council house in thread title alert go off did it?

bringbacksideburns · 07/03/2012 16:04

Jolly good.

I really hope you manage to get out of there very fast with over 2k you have left over at the end of the month, so that someone who is really desperate can get it.

So good to know social housing is going to those who really need it.

Cazm2 · 07/03/2012 16:04

Piss take!

tumbleweedblowing · 07/03/2012 16:05

Good luck in your new home. Smile
