UPDATE on to be pissed off I have been offered a council FLAT instead of a house?

Thought I would update on my previous thread as you were all so sympathetic and concerned for me Grin.

We have taken the flat and will move in tomorrow. We have no choice and will be unable to be put on the transfer list for a year and will then probably have to wait a further 2/3 years for a house to come up.

The flat is on the (top) 2nd floor of a small block. We are 'lucky' in that the block is being upgraded and they have put in new windows/balcony doors/front doors and replaced all the railings around the two balconies. There is one off the kitchen and one off the lounge. The flat is very light and airy (although was stinky) and DH has painted/bleached it to within an inch of it's life and it is now presentable. There was decent laminate floor down already and it has a recently fitted kitchen, new toilet!! and almost new radiators. We did not found any mould/damp at all which we were very impressed by! The DCs rooms are big enough and mine and DH's is much bigger than our current one.

There are 18 flats in the block in all and every 3 flats (Grd/1st/2nd floor) gets to share a reasonable sized gated garden that each overlooks. We all have large sheds as well so the trampoline and bikes can all get stored in there.

The block seems quite quiet. I am a bit meh about it now. I am hoping there will be other DCs in there that mine can play with and I will be quite happy. We have a very large town park/farm/paddling pool area within 10 mins walk. DD's sec school is walking distance and her mates live around the corner.

We have worked out that after paying rent on this, we will have over £2100 a month to live on! That is with just DH working. I can decide if I want to go back to work or not probably after the summer when DC4 is 2.

I have probably been worried for nothing and am looking forward to getting back on track and saving for a new house of our own.

Thanks to the council and all those who sent their good wishes Thanks.

This is going to be HILARIOUS, will mark my place ;) Well done you for having the rhino skin to repost!

Very pleased it's turned out relatively OK and, as per above, try to save what you can so you can move back into the private world again asap.

Hellboy · 07/03/2012 15:05

Thankyou thankyou

Im thinking of asking MNHQ to let me have a crack up at the Round-up Grin

Hellboy · 07/03/2012 15:06

Crack up haha, Im cracking up! Crack at the round-up that should have said

mrsscoob · 07/03/2012 15:06

Either this is a massive wind up by the OP or it is some journo/politician wanting people to believe the myth that everyone who lives in social housing is fuck off loaded and are all having a laugh at the rest of us. Wink

There has to be an income limit, otherwise we would all be able to stop paying our mortgages/rent and pay a third of that for a council flat and then mn about how much money we have

Money won't make you a nicer person op

LilacWaltz · 07/03/2012 15:07

Wasn't there an MP who chose to stay in his council house rather than buy his own with his hefty salary?

tantrumsandballoons · 07/03/2012 15:08

....votes hellboy has a crack up at the round up WinkWinkWink

EmpireBiscuit · 07/03/2012 15:10

Florabeebaby · 07/03/2012 15:10

Jesus. This better not be true.
If it is then I am going to give up.

HelloShitty · 07/03/2012 15:11

So relieved you have somewhere for the trampoline. It's been keeping me awake with worry for weeks.

Mrsjay · 07/03/2012 15:12

somebodies income doesnt really come into consideration on social housing but we have been through this on the OP other thread , anyway congrats on your new flat and i hope you are happy there i am sure you will be ,

YonWhaleFish · 07/03/2012 15:12

£2100 I dont see the big deal with that amount as disposable income, people do, some dont, its irrelevant really.

Slaps thigh and enjoys a hearty laugh>

Best wishes OMFFG; I think you had anticipated some stereotyped-hellhole image of a council flat, but now you've seen the reality and it's pretty good. (I speak as someone who grew up in a council flat.)

LonelyNight · 07/03/2012 15:21

Fucking hell, I got flamed for waiting on a council house when I live with a family member who works part time and I am disabled yet you get cheered for getting one and you have £2100 left!

WTAF!

We're still waiting, overcrowded and I can't get out of the flat if the lift breaks because I can't do stairs, no wonder we've been waiting so fucking long but yeah, I should just do what I got told and find a job when some days I can barely move so I can afford to rent privately while people who don't need it get subsidised.

breatheslowly · 07/03/2012 15:22

OP - why don't you just phone the Daily Mail and bypass MN. They could do one of those "expose" style articles on you which aren't exposes in the least as the family in question has gathered to pose with thei arms folded looking miserable. Actually we could write the article for you with MN's collective creativity.

Mrsjay · 07/03/2012 15:23

I have until 3 years ago lived in a council house And my parents both worked my mum part time my parents paid rent I dont see what the huge deal is TBH

we had always paid full rent on our council flat , isnt it better somebody pays full rent to a L A than a private landlord ? people cant fecking win sometimes , they are scroungers for claiming housing benefit and milking social housing for paying rent

lisaro · 07/03/2012 15:26

So, Cinderella SHALL go to the ball with a trampoline Hmm

LonelyNight · 07/03/2012 15:26

MrsJay We pay rent too, we can just afford it, we can't afford private. That's what social housing is meant for.

There's a difference between being able to pay rent and live and being able to pay rent and have £2100 left over.

niceguy2 · 07/03/2012 15:26

Agree with breatheslowly. Call the Daily Mail. Don't forget to have the obligatory photos with the kids looking sad and big plasma screen TV in the background.

Voidka · 07/03/2012 15:27

Did you think through your boast post?

Hellboy · 07/03/2012 15:30

I cant wait for OPs next thread

"......and would you believe when we took the carpet up we found the floorboards were actually gold bullion, and our old house is back on the market and is still decorated the way we left it and is actually up for £50k LESS than we originally paid......"
